Third edition. Crazy stuff. But not that hard to find. I'd be curious to pick up a copy of 1st or 2nd ed WHFB.

I think I still have my 1st edition WHFB rulebook packed away somewhere. The cover is ripped off it, though.

I'd like to see a 1st edition just to see what it was like back then -- I didn't start till late 6th.

I've got one of those, from when I started to play wargames back in the mid 80s. Mine is a 3rd edition, I thought. Haven't played WHFB since then so I can't compare it to the later editions. All I know is that our group were all taking maximum level 4 wizards once we figured out the game. There were great spells like 'Crevasse" which could auto-destroy multiple units at once. Sol we made a house rule to limit Wizards to level 2. Next game everyone brought max Dragons to the table. It was really easy to cheese out back then... We had the most fun playing the scenarios out of WD with fixed army setups.

I played a bit of 1st edition and gave it up quickly. Champions, heroes and wizards were so powerful there really was no point in taking any ordinary troops. It was possible to thrash the enemy's army quite soundly and still lose because he would have some mega-spell that won the game.
Never played since.

I played 2nd ed. I built up quite a nice Orc and Goblin army at the time - back when individual models cost 25p to 50p each! I still have the box with the books in tip top condition. I keep thinking about dunking it ion eBay, but haven't been in such dire need of cash to actually go through with it...

I have an old Ravening Hoards book with the Nippon Army list and a copy of WD with the Pigmys.
I never played but it look like 80s 40k, tons of mad ideas, no balance, no real 'game' there just stuff mashed together.
