I want this be a solid starting point for a larger army, working my way through 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, 1850 and eventually to 2000pts.  I figure get the rank and file out of the way and then I can start adding the toys later.

My initial ideas for the 750pts list would be to add another two squad platoon with Lascannons and Plasma guns but I had considered putting in an Armoured Fist squad (though no idea how to kit them out), or perhaps even a Leman Russ, just to give me a break from all those footsloggers.

So.... let me know what you think.

Actually you have a very solid list. Any changes to it are debatable. My only reccomendation is for you to drop iron D off of the two platoon HQs and use the 10 extra points to upgrade the heavy bolter squads flamers to more plasma. Your whole army should be in the leadership bubble of your HQ and he should be out of line of sight. Your platoon HQ squads should be used as deep striking suicide units anyway so the iron D is a waste on them. Personally I am a big fan of the min squad and the armored fist at 500 points. Not to many people take the guns to crack av12 at 500 points.

It is nice list.  I agree wholeheartedly with what was said about the ID and upgrading the flamers tosoemthing with some range.  Personally I don't tend to have flamers in units with heavy weapons.  They become to much of an either or squad for me.

Perhaps changing one platoon to an Armoured Fist squad is a good idea as well.  You'll get an extra heavy weapon (Mutli-laser and Heavy Bolter on Chimera - plus one in the squad)  and you'll have points left for a Sentinel, unit of Ratlings, small squad of Vets or even some Rough Riders (5 with hunting lance is only what - 55 points?  Sorry - no codex to hand).

foil7102 - I'd only added the ID because I had the points spare - I was trying to be cheap and not buy anymore minis so I was working with what I've already got. I did used to favour an Armoured Fist Squad over the second platoon but figured I'd have a go at a footslogging army this time.

Avatar111x - I like the idea of adding some Rough Riders. I'd been working on some conversions for IG bikers but put them to one side to try and stop myself from being side tracked from working on the grunts of my army.

rryannn - Thanks! That's what I was thinking. Unless I got stuck in some serious CC I thought I might do OK. And even if I did, perhaps all those bodies might actually help.

I'd say equal. In the first list, there were 7 scoring units, now there are six... no biggie. however, the 93 pts. for the chimera is 1/5 of the list, and can be destroyed with 1 shot, something that would not happen to the 10 man squad it replaced in the first list.

I like both, one is a static gun line, the other is a mobile force, each having it's own strengths and weaknesses. If these are your first attempts at a guard list, you're definately on the right track!!!

Both lists are actually pretty good. 500 points for Guard is difficult, and you got it right. Twice. I prefer the first list, as I prefer any list with lots of squads, but yeah, well done. I'm really impressed. I would use that first one, although foil is correct about the redundant ID. Normally I like redundancy in armies, but at 500 points you truly don't need 3 models with ID (as hard as it is for me to say that, given my unyielding love for that upgrade).

Anyway, yeah, good lists. Make both. Gives you some variety.

Thanks for the advice guys.

High praise coming from H.B.M.C. there - though I have to admit to having read my way through pretty much every one of your comments about the IG before I put my list together. Can't take all the credit.

Guess I should make a start putting these lists together then.
