He's not abstract though- he's just not very realistic.
I wouldn't want him to be the only illustrator on a project, but a 40K product just isn't really 40K unless it has a Blanche illustration. His ability to capture the enormous scale of the madness in the 40K world pretty much defines that world for me.

Since when was there a codex where only one artist did all the art? I love the hell out of Blanche and his work, but even I know that GW never has one guy do all the art for a codex.

I guess it's just too busy for an untrained/unwilling eye. That's what I meant earlier by "illustrators' illustrator". If you're an illustrator, you can have hours of fun finding little things in his work. Although I admit since Liber Chaotica his work has been going down hill a little. Possibly because GW wants him to do almost all the illustrations these days, meaning faster/sketchier/less thought out work. (ref/chaos daemons and the new BRB)

I normally hate really busy work, like most anything Joe Madureira did for Darksiders. 8 monster faces on one dude or whatever. Strangely, I really love Blanche's work. My first memories of 40k are all his awesome artwork from the 3rd ed starter box and rulebook.

Nah It's a cocept piccy in all likelihood.
Spikes are not really practical for easy moulding nor modelling.
The problem with the old models is that the spikes are way overscale and impractical and nothing more than symbolic.
How they manage to portray that characteristic of the DE will be very interesting. I reckon the blades on vehicles is okay, but all over the costumes they just get silly imho.

The old vehicles will do just as nicely
says Chibi with 9 reavers, 4 raiders and a couple of ravagers
Totally naff when it comes to using them so a swanky new design ain't gonna make a lot of difference!

That's exactly what I don't want them to look like. I want the Dark Eldar wyches to be proof that GW can sculpt female faces in plastic without frakking it up. If they take their cue from the plastic daemonettes instead of something like the Dark Elf witches, I'll continue not buying a single GW model until the next opportunity comes up. Plastic Sisters of Battle, presumably.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

It's hardly abstract, it's not squiggly lines you can see the raiders quite well given the distance they are drawn at. I love his work. It's got a lovely coarseness and it's not comic book like some of the arty exaggerated stuff produced for 40K 3rd edition which was horrible IMO. It takes me straight back to my childhood with Realms of Chaos.

What's the difference between that and GW's current strategy of,"Leak a couple of details and/or pieces of artwork to the online community every so often, and let the fanbase do the work of hyping the army to the hardcore 40k fans."? Not much incentive for them to do that when there's been a DE rumor thread in every major gaming forum started about every 2 weeks for the last year.

I like John Balnche's art, and miniatures. It's good to see some style and creativity. I don't care if some of his images are indistinct, especially when it's chaos/warp oriented - it creates an effect of 'ooh, what am I looking at?'. The only times I'd fault him are when his drawings look too two-dimensional. I welcome this Dark Eldar art. I hope it's not an accurate representation of the new Dark Eldar ships but, this being John Blanche, it's highly unlikely to be. The feel of the piece is spot on for DE - creepy and weird.
I have to concur with all those who say GW should gives us more info. I understand them not wanting to give a specific release date, but for goodness sake tell us what you have in the works. Give us some sneak previews. At least make an official announcement well in advance. Let's face it, a lot of us have to actually save our money to buy GW products. If they want to make a fast return on their investments, they need to give us decent forewarning of new releases. We probably won't know for sure about new DE, or see any of the miniatures, until a few weeks before their release. Which means I probably won't be able to buy many of them until a couple of months after their release. Same thing happened with Space Hulk, although in that case it was me who lost out, not GW. They kept it secret until the last minute, charged £60, and made it limited edition. I had more important things to spend my money on at the time (like food and rent) so I didn't buy one. I would have, if I'd been given a chance.

The last year? I think it's been closer to a decade.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
I remember seeing John Blanche's work for the first time when I started in 2nd edition. My first thought was "Wow this artist sucks balls and GW needs to get rid of him, stat." This sentiment is reinforced every time I see his work in any context. It's just awful. It's sloppy, it's exaggerated to the point of ridiculous. I find myself trying to exclude it from my perception of the 40k universe, which isn't hard since it doesn't appear to represent it in any direct way. It looks more like generic, surreal sci-fi.
Mark Gibbons, however, is the artist with the greatest ability to capture the spirit of the 40k universe and all its badassery, IMO.
Adrian Smith is just a Mark Gibbons wannabe, but he's done some decent stuff. Unfortunately he also appears to be somewhat of a John Blanche wannabe. And that's really holding him back.
The revealing of new DE art is a good sign and I'm happy to see it. The art itself is bad. It looks like he forgot that he was illustrating DE shortly after he started, and just went on a big Chaos/Tyranid tangent, with his usual 'lots of curly horns growing out of everything!!!' Then he finished and said "Oh crap, I forgot this was supposed to be a DE piece..." So he scribbled in a couple Raiders (with lots of curly horns growing out of them) and called it good. Just awful.
