Done a little work on the Black Prince

and found this awesome picture!

Harks back to my preparatory notes made oh so long ago.

I'm pondering how to paint the sword. The visual que for the model comes from Moorcock's Elric and I quite some of the early artwork for the book covers. Of course this would mean more black, something I'm loathe to do (I get criticised a lot for lack of contrast and it's something I think I'll hear a lot once I post the finished pictures of the prince). A plain silver sword would mean another cold colour against the blue of the Cold one's hide. Perhaps a magma - esque sword? I could then paint his ring red and have a warm purple along the barding of the steed to complete the triangle of colours.

Love to hear any and all thoughts.

Cheers Scraz, another quick update:

New Year and a new toy to play with in the form of a camera. This is one of the first shots i've taken and it's mightily frustrating trying to learn what all the bells and whistles do ona this thing. Anyway here is a quick update on how the Imperial side of the divide is going. Ravenwing and a tactical squad:

I also have a W.I.P shot of some deathwing terminators. Enjoy!

More updates soon as well as W.I.P shots on facebook.

Cheers dude! I hated the idea of red casings but they certainly add contrast to the miniatures.

Dark Vengeance continues apace but in the meantime...more Chaos!

Hello all!

This is a mini blog charting my progress painting Throgg the big dirty King of Trolls and the mouthwateringly cool Dragon Ogres by GW.

Couple of W.I.P shots to kick things off. I've also written something of a mini review of the sets on my blogsite:

http://loserstudio.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/the-roar-of-beasts-throgg-and-dragon.html

Until next time don't you forget about me...

Thanks guys. I can't shake the thought of Throgg as an angsty teenager... I have an update for you.

Do you know those miniatures you just can't stop painting? Throgg is an amazing miniature to paint, I just got lost in it and after waking from my painting trance I had this.

Looking at the picture I can see bits and pieces I need to clean up. The skin tones are a little flat and I can work on the cape a little more. I'm still unsure whether yo give the model an ink wash to sharpen up a few of the details or leave it as is.

A question for everyone; I intend to have some UHU stringy drool on Throgg's many mouths - but what colour should it be? I'm leaning toward a nice vibrant toxic green, but blood may be more frightening. Any input here would be invaluable.

Oh, green or blue background...or other?

Cheers for the comments guys.

@winterdyne; I'll message you with the methodology.

@ manickze; ha cheers dude.

Good news, these models have been featured on the white dwarf daily edition on games workshop's website!

It's my first time on there and I can't tell you how excited I am. It's been an ambition to have models in white dwarf since I could hold a paint brush, and this is one step closer to getting into the actual magazine.

Cheers guys. Here's what's up next:

“All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong, and repairs the evil. The only crime is pride.”

“A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.”

Hello, this is the opening shot charting my progress of this wonderful diorama sculpted by Simon Egan and released by the good ol' boys of Frogeworld.

Still in the clean up stage and I'm mightly impressed by what the team have managed to achieve. The scene is dolorous an ending chime to the hope of the Great Crusade. I hope I can do it justice.

Cheers for the replies guys. I'll reply to them a little later on - just got enough time to upload these and fly out to pick my GF up from work.

She won't be happy if I'm late.

Will it be our ideals that linger after us, or the terrible violence's we visit upon each other?

Looking at the photographs I am really surprised by how monochromatic the skin and armour tones are. I intend to add a little warmth to the skin tones and start hightlighing and shading the armour to add more depth.

For more piccies check out the blog for extra photo's.

Such awesome work man! This is my new favorite blog now, no doubt ^^

Do you use mostly airbrushing when your doing the basic colour? And then go over with a pencil when your doing details/highlights etc

Keep the good work man, looking forward to how Abbadon is gonna turn out!

Cheers guys!

At charky; yup it's mostly airbrush work, then I use a paintbrush to add depth and definition. No pencil involved (although this is an awesome way of adding battle damage).

A note on osl; I felt that this would be a huge risk to take at the start of the project but without risk you don't improve and I like working to the principle of never compromising or letting fear get in the way of an idea. I'm using the under lighting as a visual reference to Horus and it also helps that he looks bat gak crazy with the red under light. This is foreshadowing e madness that will consume the character.

There's also another reason why I've used the red. I want loken and abaddon to be associated with warm and cold colours. Abaddon's features are skewed with rage, transformed by red. For loken I've used blue as an undertone to the skin, representing the cold doctrine of the imperial truth.

Once again I have to say this kit is phenomenal. This may very well be the best sculpted miniature I've ever painted. The detail on the face and the little articulations of the models charging at one another is breath taking.

Lilloser.

Thanks know no pear. It was a huge moment for me.

Now, the individual pics.

Loken Captain of the Tenth, renounced Son of Horus, Luna Wolf.

I've written up a retrospect in the character on my blog:

http://loserstudio.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/garviel-loken-luna-wolf-son-of-horus.html

A little controversial for staunch imperial but there you go.

What do you guys think of the gif? It's quite clunky and it was a bitch to make. May only reserve this for special items like this diorama.

I would suggest not placing your watermark/website on a gif till you're done, so that they don't jump around the picture and look badly stitched together. I really like your take on Abaddon, he.. reminds me of Horus! Why is his topknot red, though?

Thanks Pear.

I went with the red top know because I think it looks better. It's been picked up on a couple of times and I'm wondering why it is a point of contention? Is there something in the back history about it being a certain colour?

Abaddon possessed a particularly deep voice, was taller, stronger and bulkier than the average Space Marine, and wore his long black hair in a strikingly tall topknot when not using a helmet.
From Lexicanum. I mean, sure it doesn't source this or anything, but yeah.

Also, I was about to ask how the Finecast Farsight was, then I saw that there's an unboxing thing on your blog.. BRB!
