And here it is painted...
I'm quite happy with how it turned out. I think that the shadows of the wings can be deepened a little more and the Lions face could use a little more definition, but on the whole very pleased. I just have to decide what to do with the back of the banner now. Right now, I think that I will paint more written scrawl.
I also completed a little freehand on the Librarian's book:
The images have again been inspired by William Blake and is taken from the First Book of Urizen, plate 14 (click the link to read the 14th plate and see other disturbing images). I tried to re-create this image on the book:
and decided to have a scrawl with flaming skulls on the first page. I'm very close to completing the Librarian, but I'm debating whether to a some magic-y something emanating from his right hand. It looks kind of empty at the moment and I may create something for it.
Any feedback would be great.

Dang, LL, that libby is looking awesome. Great job on the freehand in his book and on that DW banner. I'm at a loss for what you could put in his hand, outside of just adding OSL to it.

Thank you both.
I have a perverted desire to model a can of fosters in his hand, but that would be utterly stupid. He couldn't drink it with his ventilator...
Osl has been suggested a few times to me but I'm a bit worried that the lingual will look a bit at odds with the rest of the army. However, it is a special character model that can get away with such an extravegant flourish.

Hmmm... Have you considered a straw? ANd maybe a little connection socket on his mouth grille.
Oh, and on the banners. Another technique to consider is to paint them on double or tripple size, then scan them, resize, and print. That way you will have incredibly crisp detail, and none of the paint buildup. The bigger size will allow you to add more elaborate detailing and such. I used that technique well over a decade ago for a dreadnought's banner, looked good. ^^

Oh man, I forgot to add the completed deathwing shots! Thank you all for the kind comments.
Squad Imahiel 'Victuus Priscus'
The second of my Deathwing squads; Imahiel 'Victus Priscus' which literally translates as the 'living ancient'; but can be read as the living dreadnought. The nickname is a playful nod to the age of the miniature, and the venerable status of Imahiel. The watcher that walks beside him is a figure of ambigous portent. On the one hand, having a watcher follow Imahiel marks him for greatness within the chapter, but it may be a harbinger of the sergeant's demise, and final ascension to the chassis of a dreadnought.

Squad Belphegor

more pics here
Squad Belphegor accompanies Belial to war, forming his personal cohort and spearhead of attack. Belphegor is the most senior sergeant of the army and is second only to revered Cain in council to the Lord of the Deathwing. When squad Belphegor takes to the field, the air scorches with lightening, and thrums to the irresistible crack of hammers destroying all before them.

It's felt like an age since I've updated this log. I've been kept busy with the blog, commission work and plain old work (all the usual bland excuses). However, I have a few bits and pieces that i'm working on; Sanguinius is now in the painting stage having completed the sculpt, and I've started work on Lucifer.
I need a little help deciding which background to photograph the W.I.P stages of painting. The first is a neutral background, and the second is a warmer version that would compliment the golden armour.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm leaning more toward the neutral background, but wonder if a warmer one would be better toward the end of the project?

It's worth a lot Moltar. I'm getting roughly fifty fifty reaction to the photos. It's a difficult one to gauge as the model itself has only been primed. I may end up having to photograph them with both backgrounds and post them up.

The House Guard of Ch'Ihll
Famed for the Black lacquered armour of the Ch'Ihll dynasty, Cynath Ch'Ihll, the Bastard prince, maintains a regiment of warriors in his household at all times. Acting as the Prince's debt collectors, thugs and disposable pleasures, it is never-the-less a great honour to serve as a retainer in one of the noble houses private armies.
These warriors are drawn from the citizens of Naggarond, Capitol of Naggaroth and therefore of cold complexion. Unlike standard militia raised in times of the Witch King's wars, the warriros of Ch'Ihll are professional soldiery, bound to the Ch'Ihll house. A peculiar trait shared amongst those of the Black house-hold is their distinctive eye colour. It is a little known fact that and Elf's eye colour can change throughout their life, either through extreme stress, trauma, or inner turmoil. The common Nagarothii aphorism is the best liars have black eyes. The ritualistic bonding to the Ch'Ihll house taints the Elf's eyes a violent carmine that deepens to a royal purple the longer they serve.
The sigil adorning the Warriors shields is a mocking reference to the slur cast upon the current ruling Matriarch of the house; The Gorgon Queen, Mother of Monsters. Cynath has taken the Gorgon as his personal heraldry for this campaign, a cruel joke to remind his enemies of his dubious allegiance to the Queen and his knowledge of their private vulgarities.
The Household Guard is captained by Khatalha Khela'Mandour. He is responsible for the training of Cyanth's warriors, the maintenance of armour and meating out discipline where it is needed. Khatalha served a commission as a corsair aboard the Kraken's Tempest - the Black Ark that first ferried Cynath across the Old World during his Hakseer. Khathla rose to promnince in Cynath's court when his detachment of Corsairs had run down a chariot manned by Characian lions. In lieu of plunder, Khatalha took the lion's pelt as a symbol of power; a satisfactory return for the loss of an eye.

Cheers guys. I know it's not much fun looking at W.I.P's but I have another couple of projects I'm working on that i'm quite proud of.
I've been thinking about the background of this force and where a sorceress would fit in. Cynath (my lord) is currently roaming the Chaos wastes North of the Wall having dooped a garrison manning the Naggarond watch towers. Any Coven sorceresses initially deceived would be liable to turn around raise an alarm - not very good news for Cynath, so he's had them assassinated. Without a medium, guide or seer, traveling the ephemeral wastes would be quite difficult; nigh on suicidal. That's where this beauty comes in, the sorceress simply known as the child of the wastes.
The Child of the Wastes
I already have a big cat for her familiar (she's a crazy cat lady who has grown up in the Chaos wastes), and I intend to model a big fur collar for her cloak. I'm not really sure how to model her cloak at this time. I like the sleek look i've managed to sculpt for her legs. It would be a shame to cover them up with a cloak. I'm also rather stuck as to what to do for her right arm. I don't want her holding a totem, seer staff or big skull thing. Any suggestions would be ace.
I've also mocked this baby up;
The Harridan 'Red Ruin'
I had Lelith's body lying around in my bitz box for ages and I decided to mock this gal up to paint. Not sure if she'll be included in Cynath's force, but she looks really fun to paint. Not sure why I chose the name either, other than it just seemed to fit the character of the miniature.
Until next time.
LilLoser,
P.S. I've been writing up articles on paint brand comparisons for my website. I'm publishing the second installment tomorrow that deals with Vallejo paint (first one is already up dealing with Citadel paints). I' really appreciate any feedback you may have to share on how the article was written, constructed or presented; or whether you agree or disagree with anything i've written. Cheers warseer.

The warriors seem like they are a hit. No negative criticism has come my way so far and everyone is being so nice about them. I'm very proud at how they have turned out and now I can look around at the army composition as a whole, and how it would work outside of a gaming enviroment.
By this I mean how would the army function in real life. What kind of things would it need to survive in the Wastes? Who else would be included in the force that wouldn't necessarily appear in the main army book; either because of their local nature, or the make up of Cynath's traveling war-band. I also want to buy and paint units that I think are cool. The warriors are quite neat and tidy - lots of straight lines and sheer surfaces. Time for a bit of rough me thinks...
These are the first pics of my WIP dark rider and shade equivalents. I don't know all the details behind them yet, but I know the guy with the sword and chain is called Varro.
These guys are rangers of the Ch'Ihll estate. They maintain the grounds, hunt the meat for the Highborns plate, and try to keep the monsters of the estate from doing too much damage. The groundsmen are very poor and so cannot afford the Black Steeds the corsairs plunder from Ulthan. However, they do have their ways of getting around fast which stems from their love of dog fighting. One's social status is determined by how well their dog fights in the pits. The bigger and more ferocious breeds of dogs are obviously the best, so they cross breed their pets with whatever wild creatures the rangers can find. The bigger animals can be mounted and the ranger can ride them into battle, which is a nice excuse to buy these:
I've used the Hellion kit to make vicious feral riders that have no saddle of stirrups. They hold onto tufts of fur and kick the wolf / big dog to go where they want them to go. The fur I've sculpted on their back is from a weasel (a nod to the sable brushes I use). I plan on painting these with a darker, more sanguine tone of flesh, festooned with tattoo's!
These are the rough sketches I have for them now. Any input or crteativy is highly welcomed!
Toodles,
LilLoser
Oh does anyone know what this is in Druchii?
"Wolf Who Devours The Sun"
It's the name of this particular ranger tribe.

Echo...Echo..echooo...
Ahem.
Val Kraihe 'The Crow' Assassin
Studying one of the thousand aspects of Khaine the child only now remembered as The Crow has become an outcast in the fraternity of assassins. While meditating on the Khaineth Zarrid (a death blow that shatters the spinal column) a crow entered her enumerations and posed the assassin a riddle.
The child assassin unable offer a response, barred her throat for restitution. When she awoke from her trance the child assassin found a pair of knives resting in her lap, but had lost her voice to the fled crow.
Ever divorced from her elvish anima, the assassin has taken on bestial aspects and become an outcast among her own kind. Her silence has been replaced with a hideous squawk. Her feet have become elongated ending in talons. Her back has become bent, a low sloping gait replacing her race's usual elegance. With her knives she found that she could leap further, and higher than before. Her precise killing excellence had now become a frenzy of blows landed from above.
Rejected by her peers and mutilated by her masters for her deformity, The Crow now occupies the highest spires of Naggarond maddened by the riddle of the crow.
