I also wish the latches could be replaced if they break but of course GW prefers you just buy a new case and throw a perfectly good case with a broken latch in the trash. They really didn't fix any of the common complaints about the old style cases and added the problem of models sliding into each other. You really have to pack them in there to keep them from all sliding down to the bottom. A friend got one and stuffed a tray full of terminators, did the shake test and they were all fine. However, models like eldar infantry wouldn't fare so well.
I would put the eldar minis in sideways so they put more pressure on the foam, without taking up more space. I'll actually test that in the morning. The foam seems to work well on both large and small infantry, it's just a matter of how you put the minis into the case.

Mine haven't shown up yet (I live in the middle of nowhere so deliveries aren't quick) but after reading some of the comments so far I feel some of the criticism isn't well-earned. I understand it's frustrating but from the pics and vids I felt immediately that they wouldn't be a good case for DE, honestly anything short of custom cut foam prob is bad, especially for the thin and spiky raiders/ravagers. Calling it a bad case because it won't comfortable fit your specific army hardly seems fair. I know it sucks that it won't work for your chosen faction but that doesn't mean it won't be a good case for someone else.
I feel these cases really would work well for space marines in particular. Maybe it's GW playing spess muhreens favorites again or maybe they just happen to be the easiest to transport around but whatever the reason they seem like a good fit.
As for the plastic: I tend to be super gentle with my stuff anyways so I'm not worried about breaking it. All in all I'll definitely wait for mine to show up before I give my final verdict but for now I think that even though they may not be the best case for everyone they are probably still a good case for some.

Hmm, these don't look too bad actually.
My one complaint about their old cases was the sides not being all that sturdy and these look like they're a little thicker.

I've taken a quick look at them in person, and if we get one, it would have to be a crusader. They do hold more than you think, but it still seems like it's more of an infantry storage case than anything else to me.
As it is, since I pretty much make the decisions on the storage stuff anyway, we might just stay with battlefoam (considering our armies).

I've received all of my cases and I gotta say I'm quite pleased. I can easily fit 50 infantry models into one layer panel and could probably fit more if needed. The models I put in were a mix of Chaos space marines with a variety of weapons and a bunch of cultists. I also had a couple banner carriers in there that I put in laying down and I don't fear to break the banners at all. I say this design is great for infantry in particular.
As for vehicles I tested out some chaos rhinos with spiky bits and havoc launchers on top. I tried out how GW did in their videos and while it held very snug, I was only able to fit 1 rhino per layer. A better way I found to transport them was to take out the top layer, flip the rhinos upside down and snug the havoc launchers and spiky bits into the zigzag pattern lines, I was able to put three rhinos comfortably like this and then I put the thin foam top protector on top and closed up. They didn't shift in transport and I felt it was probably the most economical way to transport them. The beauty of that is that I could still put infantry or weapons and stuff in the layer they sat on top of. I have a predator with a detachable turret I plan to also transport in this fashion. though I think I would only fit two preds this way due to the sponsons.
All in all I am very happy with these cases and I can see myself getting good use out of them. My next test is to try out my elder army which consists primarily of vypers and war walkers, I have a few plans on how I will load them in and I expect it should work quite well. My fist though for these cases is that they will make blob guard and ork boyz army players very happy, you can fit a TON of infantry in very little space very easily. I am still hard pressed to see how these would economically and safely carry DE raiders and especially ravagers. The case design is not perfect but it works well by my tastes and is still very competitively priced (which is a breath of fresh air coming from GW).
If anyone who can't see one in person has any questions feel free to ask and I'll try to help out to the best of my ability (I don't have 1 of every army to test out).I'll get off my soap box now, thanks for reading guys.

Deranged Necron Destroyer

Being a necron who uses a monolith I had been hoping that i can fit it inside one of these and be able to close the lid. the (large) case is deep enough to put the monolith in it but then you have little to no room on one side. If you put the monolith in sideways you have room to fit a tray on top of it but it will be at an angle and I'm worried that this could effect the carrying of the models in the tray. For me I am still impressed by the medium and large cases and might still buy the large one.

Quite amazingly GW have decided to use the same size footprint as KR half size trays. The insert tray is 255 x 190 x 50mm, so any 1/2 depth 1/2 width KR tray will fit in there. The larger outside wall of the bottom tray is 220 x 280. Interestingly the small GW Skirmish case holds 3 trays (3/4 depth) the GW Battle case holds 7 of them (effectively 7/8 of a standard KR Unit), and the GW battle case holds 1.5 KR Units of trays, the same as the new KRX case we have just launched.
and yes it did make us smile when we picked them up :-)

For the money I think these trays will do quite well. I went to our local shop and did a few stress tests. Basically, I stuffed a fully painted Dark Vengeance set, plus three extra bikes and a squad of chaos marines into the smallest case. Not gonna lie, that part took a bit of planning to make sure everything was sitting correctly. Once the case was full, we decided to toss it back and forth for a while. Then we dropped it -repeatedly- and then w decided to kick it. Also repeatedly.
I'm pretty impressed to say the least. The case clasps did not break (my first concern) and there wasn't so much as a scratch on the models; everything came out beautifully.
We did get one guy to fit his Dark Eldar army into the larger case. We did a unit of warriors, one of wyches, a Succubus, 10 of the jump infantry guys, 2 raiders, one ravager and one venom. Wasn't the whole army, and we still had some room left in the foam. We didn't kick this one, but we did jostle it around from the carrying handle (and there wasn't a single break. Again. Color me impressed.
Now, on the OTHER hand, we took our sweet time experimenting with the models in the foam to find the best fit. With the dark eldar, we were also able to take off a lot of the vehicle riders. I can say that DE players (and players with models that are similar) may be better off looking for another case just because of the time required to slot the models home here. If you don't use vehicle riders and if by some miracle you've made your sails detachable, these cases would probably be a great solution.
Overall, for the price, I think most armies will work well for these cases. I bought the one we kicked around and now it's holding My wife's LoTR Elves, complete with Ent, and my LoTR Gondor and Isenguard. I couldn't be happier with it!

I got the largest case for my white scars army. It carries, with room to spare:
50+ space marine bikes

And my 800 point hobbit army.
Much easier than the 3 cardboard boxes I was previously juggling to get all that to the FLGS.

Just watch the GW videos they show off the skirmish and crusade cases, I think.
The cases are actually awesome ***for people with multiple 40k/ WHFB armies***. It's an ideal setup for a person who may, one week, need many infantry, few tanks, and a couple gigantic models, and the next week, few infantry, many tanks, and more gigantic models. It's just extremely flexible in terms of what you can pack. Also, it's ridiculously space-efficient, which means less bulk to carry around.
On the negative side as others have stated, you must ensure it's packed in tight (though you can fill up extra space with old pluck foam or other fillers), so that models don't jostle around. Also, there are some models that it doesn't work well for, particularly, models with large extrusions like DE with whips and raiders with hangers-on-- but you know, these are inefficient models to transport for any carrying case.

Thanks for the info.
Sounds like the old 36 quid GW cases that held close to 3 trays of KR size has been replaced with a 30 quid case that holds the equivalent of 1 tray of KR size.
Wow. GW. Sounds like a bargain. :-(
And yeah, I am aware the old GW trays sucked. But the cases were pretty good. I have 10+ of the old cases which I've had for around 15 years going strong still. Although they are filled with sets of 4 GW size KR trays in most circumstances.

Daring Dark Eldar Raider Rider
|
I got my Crusader case through last week. I'm really happy with it. It's really light; the handle is good; and the models don't move at all when the lid is shut. My only problem so far has been that I had to take out one layer of foam as my Land Raider is too tall.
I've got my Black Templars in two of the four stacks of foam (each stack has two foam trays in it). The land raider takes up most of one on its own, but I've taken out the top tray in that one and have put some barricades and other terrain pieces in to fill the space.
I've got my Dark Eldar in the other trays. I've constantly been snapping these in the older GW trays with the infantry spaces. These new trays are much, much better for this army. The weapons don't jag into the foam any more. After playing my first game with it tonight I didn't break a single model when emptying or filling the case. Previously I've broken my DE models pretty much every time they've been taken out. Even unusually shaped models like my Talos and Reaver jetbikes are sitting comfortably in it, without any custom trays or cutting the foam.

It doesn't seem abrasive at all to me. And models don't seem to shift at all in there if packed right, even if they are in there loosely then that just means the foam is putting less pressure on them. Without using mine for a long period of time I can't say for sure but my impression atm is that I won't be having any issues with the foam rubbing my paint off.

Would you mind doing a test with a roughly painted bit of sprue or something? It'd be a big help. I see a lot of people talking about how their models can shift, and I worry that, if this happens, it could cause significant problems.
I'm probably going to get one, anyway, just taking care to "pack right", as you said. Still, it'd be nice to know.

So I took one of my older painted models this evening, a CSM if it matters, and proceeded to rub the gak out of it against the foam. The model was painted using citadel paints bought at GW and I do not have a sealer. Model was painted roughly 2-3 years ago and is plastic. After about 3 minutes of violent abrasion with lots of pressure I did not see any noticeable difference in the paint job. I feel confident that the foam won't be eating my paint jobs. Having said that if the models are not packed in tight enough they may have a chance to shift and bump each other and that could cause problems perhaps, I haven't had this issue with plastic models but I know I chipped a few of my pewter models by having them bumping into each other before. I did not test rubbing the foam against any of my pewter models as they aren't with me at the moment. I hope this has helped Frozen Ocean.

It did help, very much so. Thanks! It's a big relief, and I'll be buying a Crusade within a day or so (I'd buy it now, but my sister wishes to chip in because a birthday present - a generic camera case for model purposes, actually - she bought me last year was never delivered and she got refunded). The idea that the foam could rub off paint was my most major concern.

Went out and did a battle this evening, was my first time packing my army in the case for legitimate transport. Also the first time I packed in my Eldar. I was a bit rushed so I'm thinking I coulda been a bit more economical with my placement but overall it worked out. Inside is:
10 Rangers
9 Windrider jetbikes, 3 of them with shuriken cannons
1 Farseer on jetbike (He was the model I was most worried about because of his spear)
6 war walkers
6 vypers
I cheated a bit because my war walkers are pinned at the hips so the cockpits come off and their weapons are magnetized. The viper weapons are magnetized as well and the turret is friction fitted. Every packed in the Battle chest (medium size case) very nicely with room to spare. This army was 1250 points but I'm thinking I'll be able to fit in my 1500 point force when I finish my striking scorpions. Everything went out and came back home with no incident, I'm very happy with it. Here are the pics.
