Coke is a black powdery form of hydrocarbon made primarily from taking the bottom of the barrel of oil (all the C-30 + hydrocarbons) and applying large amounts of heat and pressure to them. This forces out all the useable light hydrocarbons and leaves behind coke. You can think of it as man made coal. I used to do some work in the coker (the unit that produces coke) when I was working for ExxonMobil.
