Subject: Winter Camo for tanks

Hi all, Does anyone have any good links to nice reference material about winter camo schemes for tanks? If I'm right most armies in WW1/WW2 applied a white wash over the standard colour scheme? I'm trying to decide the best way to paint a tank in a winter scheme and don't just want to make it completely white. I was thinking to paint it one colour then cover it with a white wash affect. Also would camo be applied? For example differing shades of grey or white in patterns? I assuming that most armies went for a flat white to blend in with the snow? Any reference pics would be really appreciated. The only ones I can find are for standard non winter schemes. Thanks!

it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

best bet for winter camo is this camo the tank regualrly with what ever pattern y ou want on it. then white wash the tank(white wash is a very thin white paint ) Referance material will be squadron signal books if you can find them on tanks and planes of the eastern front of WWII. Plus have you seen the movie Red Dawn?? all the russian tanks / Hinds gunships were in standard camo with a white wash over the top of them so you can get a semi transparent pattern under the white wash/winter wash best paint too do this with is (apple barrel/ plaid)

Yeah, AppleBarrel Plaid is one of the reasons people think I am such a great painter. Neat, even tartan, straight from the bottle!

That is both an incredible article and an even more awesome tank. This is from one of the WIP guys that did his own garage kits, isn't it? (reads more of blog and sees that it is, it is! Aieee! Modelling awesomeness!) Seriously, everyone owes it to themselves to check this out, fantastic modeling work and even better paint. Mind motherfreaking blown. It is really that good.

The American MERDC patterns of the late 70's, early 80's, had all 4 seasons including winter. Not a bad scheme at all in the Winter version, though the fall pattern looks like poop.
Also, the more recent NATO winter pattern is really sharp looking, especially on clean tanks like the Leopard II.

Hi everyone thanks for all the feedback and great links. That WIP article is ace and the tips on mig pigments is especially useful. I just bought a load of mig pigments and the Tamiya Weathering master set recently and having a good article or correct techniques is ace from serious modellers especially. Does anyone know any decent reference books? I love the internet sure, but theres something about a "real" book. I have a few books at home on WW1 and 2 uniforms and badges and insignia but nothing on vehicle markings or colour schemes. By the way whats apple barrel / plaid? What company produces this paint? Vallejo Model colour?

Okay so Apple Barrel is the name of the paint and Plaid is the producer... I found a site that stocks the white gloss, is this the colour you guys were suggesting? Also does anyone know if its easy to get outside of the USA?
