Yay! A huge waste of resources!

I cant wait to not play in this!

Seriously though, GW needs to step up their "global" campaign spiel. Medusa V was a perfectly good example of how Not to do it.

Well ... I'm signed up for the newsletter and have started building a 1000 point army for the campaign

Though honestly I'm just using the campaign as a vague deadline to get a new project done, and it's probably telling that I don't know jack about the campaign or any of the fluff behind it. Even if I had read a White Dwarf in the last 3 years I don't think I'd care too much more ...

But I'm still looking forward to playing some fantasy this summer, regardless.

What was wrong with Medusa V?  I had fun with it.  I recall that Dakka didn't really have anything going on during the campaign, but we were very active over at the B&C, and (though I avoided it) I hear that there was a lot going on at the "Eye of Terror" also.  Plans were made, fluff written, army badges designed; it was like we were putting on a play in the old barn or something, only with a lot more genocide!

Thats the problem with medusa V. Lack of spin and lack of interest.

You can do the same thing with your own club and not worry about the results, as atleast your results will mean something other than "Oh look! Yet another world wide campaign where we have a stalemate! I wonder how that happened!?"

I believe it was a decisive victory for the forces of the Imperium. We managed to evacuate the planet before it was sucked into the warp. We prevented various nefarious plots from reaching fruition. Waddaya want, the Return of the Squats or something?

Of course my local club can run a campaign. We could write our own rules, sculpt miniatures and cast 'em, too. It's not exactly rocket science. I had fun with it, which is really all I could hope for. You get back what you put in, I guess.

Well according to Jervis at Adepticon, despite my (and obviously others beliefs) Medusa V was their most popular global campaign yet.

I personally didn't like Medusa V because the story seemed preposterous even for the 40k universe, in that every single race converging on a single planet is just a ludicrous concept. I told Jervis that the 'every race' participating concept in the global camapaigns was what was driving me personally away from caring about them.

He said that in the studio they agree and that is why you'll see more themed global campaigns in the future where only a few races are the 'stars' of the campaign. The other races can still participate to alter some sub-plots, but it is clear who are the main races fighting over the main part of the story.

He pointed out that the Nemesis crown campaign follows this formula with 3 main races fighting over the crown (although I have no idea which three since I don't give much of a hoot about fantasy).

So I am actually looking forward to the next 40k campaign as a more focused story means they can actually come up with an interesting story to fight over.

So what's up with this campaign? Isn't it taking place in the middle of the Empire? And if so, how do they explain the participation of armies like the Lizardmen and the Tomb Kings?

At least it looks like Dwarfs will be one of the big players in the campaign so one of my armies will work.

Let me guess: Space Marines, Dark Angels and Black Templar fight against the Blood Angels... Who will win ladies and gentlemen??

Seriously, I like that they publish some new models for some races with their world wide campaigns now. Other than that, well, I guess you need a good game group to have a good campaign. Simple as that.

Of course the problem with just a few "races" being the stars means you'll have marines vs. some other list, with guard as a carry along.

What on earth is wrong with carrying multiple mini-campaigns at the same time? You can have your marines vs. nonmarines, while Tau get stomped by Nids, Chaos finally has a coffee clatch with the necrons etc.

So is this an 'actual' campaign (a la Storm of Chaos) or a fire and forget campaign like Lustria? And will there be an actual ending or just a big battle where nothing happens in the end like EoT and SoC?

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. At the center of the galaxy's interest lay the portcullis into madness, the Eye of Terror. Conspiracy and intrigue are the fuel that fires the engines of war in the Imperium of Man. It is ironic that they didn't suspect the same in their enemy. Abadbadadabdoon launches his Thirteenth Crusade and with nebulous motivation, drawing the forces of the galaxy into sudden upheaval. And for what...?

To kill one man... errr... elf...ahh eld?

Eldrad Ulthruan is dead and the galaxy is... well, pretty much the way it was before.

We played for fun in it. All it is, is another reason to play. Nothing more.

The guys that helped push it in favor of the Imperials would probably give us a different opinion as they were recognized by GW for their efforts.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

There was a big controversy about whether it was acceptable to ally with the likes of the Eldar and the Tau in order to fight Chaos or Tyranids. Certain puritan Inquisitors were definitely throwing their weight around at the Space Marines, I can tell you.

I heard that the results of Medusa V were based on total number of games played (not even total number of wins, just total number of games).  So naturally spase marienz (hurr!) won.

Probably, but that kind of speculation is to be expected when you have such an arcane campaign system.  The EoT system was pretty transparent by comparison - you report battles and the slider goes up or down.  But with Medusa V they could just as well have taken the battle reports, chucked 'em out the window, and drew straws to determine the rankings - who would have have known the difference?  Damned if I could figure out what the hell was going on.

But in related news, Ygethmor is dead.  Does this mean they'll introduce a replacement Chosen of Abaddon in the new Chaos codex?

The whole global campaign thing is getting pretty hackneyed.  The bit that pisses me off is the incessant drive to always involve all of the races in one conflict.  Medusa V made very little sense to me and I was pretty active in the campaign.  Why did everyone care so much about a planet that was going to explode?  The Imperium wastes planets every day, they don't give a crap about refugees.  The Eye of Terror was a much more enthralling campaign because it divided the races by sector and planet a bit more.  I think a longer term and more enduring campaign setting would provide for better fluff and Games Workshop could even try and follow the storyline by acting as generals for the different races, giving orders, writing fiction and whatnot.  Nemesis Crown looks like Medusa V except on the Fantasy world.  I bet money that at the end of the summer the Nemesis Crown is going to fall down a different hole in the ground and nothing (besides the deaths of a few minor characters) will have changed.  GW needs to rethink their summer campaign deal.  Medusa V totally sucked, especially because they didn't follow up on the fluff at all afterwards.  I'd feel vindicated if they wrote a Black Library history book that gave depth to the whole affair.  As it is now, its like we were kids playing in a sandbox.  Nemesis Crown will be no different.

I agree that a little more transparency on how results were calculated would have been nice.  I suppose it would make it possible for people to cheat more easily, but I imagine that few people would cheat (I am probably hopelessly naive, though).

I dunno.  Was Ygethmor important?  I'd never even heard of him until Medusa V.  Does Abaddon really even need a "Chosen?"

I'm guessing you didn't read my post earlier in the thread?

The studio actually agrees and that's why you'll see new campaigns heavily feature main protaganists and antagonists.

Somewhere in south-central England.

When they did Eye of Terror they let the Tau have a separate mini-campaign of their own, and the results were good (i.e. the Tau expanded their sphere of influence.) It was written up in the fluff for the new Codex and everyone was happy.

It would be easy to run two or three campaigns each year, a main one for the Impies/Chaos and a couple of side campaigns for other factions. Since there are so many Impy players they could have a hand in every campaign.

Cheating was clearly rampant in Medusa V. There were rings of players, 4-6 people in each, where one player was playing winning 4-5 games a day against the others, while the other players in the ring hardly ever played each other, for weeks on end.

By amazing co-incidence, these players had Hotmail addresses rather than something independently verifiable by reference to a MAC code or physical address.

I don't know if this affected the results. No-one outside GW really knows how the results were determined.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

There was a big stink about cheaters at some point and GW deleted a lot of the offending players' accounts, but I don't know if they got them all by any means. I assume that the top-scoring players were under particular scrutiny.
