I think Sentinel 55 pts: multilaser + hunter killer missile or Sentinel 60 pts: autocannon + hunter killer missile What do you all think?

IMO Heavy Flamer + Smoke Launchers (good use of Scout) 2x Sentinel each with Multilaser (where else are you going to put Multilasers, beside Chimeras?) Lascannons you're better off in Heavy Weapon platoons Autocannon is OK. I like to put Autocannon in Infantry Platoons I like the Hunterkillers, I didn't think of it but I guess they can fire both as a walker. That would be a good combo with either Autocannon or Lascannon.

Depends on their usage.
Drop troop sucidal deepstriking vs rear armor = ML + HK
Long range sniping from cover over 36" = Autocanonon or Lascannon, add HK if you like
Never understood why you cannot get a HB or upgrade to twin linking on a sentinel.

Multilasers, nothing else
or
Lascannon, nothing else
Multilasers are prefered as they are good general purpose guns and are cheap. Take lascannon if you don't have enough elsewhere. If I didnt have lascannon sentinels already second hand, I would just stick with multilasers as that is what you get in the basic boxset, ultimastely Mars pattern is the most efficient loadout, though I must say I love the look of Armageddon pattern sentinels, though I could the (un)armoured top as too thin to provide any benefit.

I run mine with lascannons and nothing else. Since I play steel legion taking a heavy weapons platoon is a little hard because of the points investment for the chimeras. And with all those chimeras I don't need any more multilasers.

It really depends on the rest of your list. If you're short on the anti-tank, then Lascannons win out.
Otherwise, Autocannons.
The Multilaser only has a 36" range. This makes it much less flexible than the Autocannon. The Autocannon can also go Rhino hunting.

Something fun to try with sentinels, have them charge Tau, or occasionally Eldar units, the strength 3 will keep them safe. Oh and no tau player ever takes emp/haywire grenades

Why not deep striking guys with heavy flamers? Great for rooting out those pesky squads hiding in terrain and anti-horde use.

I like the heavy flamer in general. Good and cheap, sits behind cover and deters some advances while remaining a scoring unit. Could occasionally opt to deepstrike against the right targets.

Is it ever worth putting Armoured Top on a Sentinel? I bought 6 of them preassembled with Armoured Tops (3 Cadian pattern, 3 Armageddon pattern). I'm considering prying the tops off before painting them, to magnet them so I can switch out either the Armoured Top or a Driver. If it was worth leaving them on, I would, as painting would be much simpler! But almost 50% of the base cost of the vehicle seems like a lot for what it does. Sure, it increases survivability a bit, but the things are so fragile anyways it hardly makes a difference. Someone please convince me that Armoured Tops are points well spent on a Lascannon or Autocannon Sentinel?

50%? I think sentinels have a discounted cost for armored top, like 15 pts. Still not really worth it.... make it as cheap as Speed Freaks can buy armored top for their AV 10 trukks and I'd buy it.

All I have to say, is get started prying the tops of the sentinels. They work best stripped down with either a multi-laser or an auto-cannon. Have you ever had a sentinel live through a game? I have to work hard to keep them alive, and it is more often they earn their points back with an exploding 6, than with their gun.

Armoured Top is not worth the popints, nor is extra armour. The 2nd hand Guard army I have has three Cadian and three Armageddon Sentinels. They had a mix iof weapons including the plastic multilasers with magnets, so no permenant mistakes there, but I eventually ran them without WYSIWYG. Armageddon Sentinels look the best, very nice ATST clone models, but the upgrades are not worth the points as you cannot make an AV10 vehicle survivable.
Put it this way. Falcons are borken in v4, but noone takes Vypers very much, not because of the price but because even with stones and holofield an AV10 vehicle is still easy to neutralise.

Posted By Orlanth on 08/10/2007 2:09 PM Put it this way. Falcons are borken in v4, but noone takes Vypers very much, not because of the price but because even with stones and holofield an AV10 vehicle is still easy to neutralise. Av10 is not the issue in the vyper case. Adding holo+stones is a 100% increase in base price, whereas falcon is only 39% increase. The holo on the falcon makes it really good as an assault transport as well as more survivable, but the vyper has no transport capability. In addition the real killer is being open topped, even it was AV12 the open topped really hurts, the falcon is shaken 75% of the time it takes a hit whereas the vyper is shaken only 55% of the time, and thats before you account for the vulnerability to blasts. If they got rid of the open topped then vypers would be damn good, if they dropped the holo/stone price as well to a 39% increase like the falcon then they would be just awesome - 9 closed topped holo/stone vypers with range 36" weapons would be just amazing even with av10.
