The state merely recognizes your rights, and has never claimed otherwise (to my knowledge).

Well... the claim was that we needed more gun-control.

However, nothing proposed in the recent gun-control debates would have prevented the mass killing of children at Sandy Hook Elementary School or any of the recent shootings.

It's purely partisan politics on both sides.

I don't much really could at this point besides armed security or the government trampling on more than our 2nd amendment rights.
