To actually give a relevant answer:
After the 5 tribes were relocated into what is now Oklahoma via the Trail of Tears, a horrible act that is all too often ignored in US history, they made their home where their fate had lead them. One of the Choctaw coined the term Okla Homma, meaning Red People (or rather People Red), which was their equivalent for the word Indian.
The Choctaw started to utilize the term when referring to their nation: The Choctaw Nation of Indiand and The Choctaw Nation of Red People (aka: The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma). The name for that portion of the territories was Indian Territory, which again translated to Oklahoma Territory. When the State joined the Union Oklahoma stuck and was chosen as the official name. The state continues to be the home of 1/3 of all native Americans in the union and is the home to more tribes than any other states.
But yes, the state settled by Indians, home to more Indians than any other state, and more Indian tribes than any other states adopted the name that was chosen by the tribes themselves as the name for their own people.
Which is just a little different than having a white owner pick a racist term for a sports team that has nothing to do with any native americans at all.

But, and I have no idea the particulars, the Redskins are named such due to other trademark laws back during their inception... Their first year in the NFL, they were known as the Boston Braves, since their home games were played at the same field/stadium as the baseball team. A year later, their lease was not renewed, so they were forced to move to another part of Boston, where due to them already having a Native American type logo, but no longer being able to be called "Braves" they went with Redskins, and the name has stuck.
So, if anything... this is all Baseball's fault

When I lived in New Orleans, I'd quite often in the very early mornings go to Cafe Dumonde and get a couple of beignets and a cafe au lait, then take them down by the Mississippi and sit there watching ships going by. Good memories.

I thought that this might be a great idea... Each year, Washington adjusts it's name to include the actual name of an American Indian tribe, and uses it's vast media presence to shed light on their history. One year, they'd be the Washington "Apaches", the "Seminoles" the next, the "Comanches", "Iroquois", "Navajo", "Mohawk", etc... They'd only use names with the individual tribe's permission, and pay a use/license fee. If a tribe didn't want their name used, they'd opt out. Snyder would fething LOVE this, since Washington fans would buy licensed garb with each new name. The tribes would benefit from the millions of dollars they'd take in in license fees, plus have the opportunity to educate the country about their amazing heritages. Numerous opportunities galore: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_federally_recognized_tribes

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Football’s growing controversy over the use of the name “Washington Redskins” came to a screeching halt after the U.S. Army massacred the entire team, then promptly confiscated all its land and property, sources confirmed Monday.
Elements of the 7th Cavalry Regiment, airlifted in on UH-60 Black Hawks, fast-roped into FedEx Field in the great history, tradition and legacy of that regiment, shooting down stadium security guards before turning their guns on the players and owners who were there for a routine preseason meeting.
As the troopers stormed the stadium, Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss was discussing the naming controversy with reporters, saying, “I hope the best for it because I feel like, as a Redskin–” before a Staff Sergeant shouted, “He’s a redskin! Get him!” and dropped him with a well-aimed shot to the torso.
7th Cavalry then took formal possession of FedEx Field, renaming it to Fort Freedom.
1st Cavalry Division commander Brig. Gen. Michael Bills has pronounced the operation “an outstanding success” despite some negative publicity after one of the unit’s supporting AH-64 Apache helicopters blew up a local Buffalo Wild Wings to deny food to the enemy. Bills also claimed that several widely-circulated photos, allegedly showing troopers wearing pilfered Redskins memorabilia and collectibles on their belts, were actually of volunteer militia recruited from the Dallas Cowboys.
Some human rights groups have objected to the Army’s subsequent forced prostitution of the Redskins’ cheerleader squad, but Bills explained that they need the money “so they don’t starve in their tepees come winter.” Authorities also grew concerned after a large crowd of protesting fans had to disperse following a totally unexpected outbreak of smallpox.
The 7th Cavalry has announced plans to compensate owner Dan Snyder’s grieving family with some plastic beads and a bottle of whiskey.
Secretary of the Army John McHugh has suggested the Army may expand the operation to target the normally-peaceful Kansas City Chiefs and forcibly remove them to an appropriate stadium in Oklahoma or Arizona.
None of the other services have decided whether to join the Army’s operation yet. Marine Commandant Gen. James Amos was unavailable for comment, and an aide referred us to a note on his door which read: “Gone to fight the Florida State Seminoles. Will be back when the season is over.”
“On the one hand, we could have left the Redskins in place and tried to teach them the ways of modern society,” said Secretary McHugh. “On the other hand, God created this great stadium, and it should be given to the San Francisco 49ers, who can make more productive use of it.”
The surviving Redskins are expected to launch a legal claim on their right to FedEx Field, which they have occupied since 1997, when the land was purchased via solemn treaty by businessman Jack Kent Cooke over the protests of local chief Gov. William Donald Schaeffer.
Interestingly, the land seems to have originally been owned by a corporation called Nacotchtank, which claims the land was never actually sold.

My only complaint against the Redskin name change dealeo is this. My Grandfather used to call them the 'Deadskins' because in general the team didn't do very well in football at all. He wasn't racist or anything but he liked mocking how bad the washington was. So now that name no longer makes sense.

Right... it is hard to 'be offended' when you have been dead for 4 generations. Funny how genocide silences a minority group and then the justification for racist behavior is "I don't hear them complaining!"
