Isn't it time we stopped listening to the crap and made our own rules. Yes we can play by the 'moron variant' i.e. GW official rules and Codexs publications, at tourney and with strangers but have a set of decent rules to play with amongst ourselves. Who knows we may even produce an ork Codex before GW do, le alone a better one. This isnt entirely just an acrid rant at GW, back at the turn of the nineties a set of rules for 40k Rogue Trader were circulating, 2nd edition bore more than a passing semblance to them. These rules were photocopied from a single game groups ring binder of alterations. Who knows where this could lead, we have the talent here so.. Now because we have the net we will be able to disseminate info further and quicker, we will also get more disagreement. So we need a core of compiliers and editors to get the whole put together correctly. We could start with Dakkahammer 'rulebook alterations', thern go on to fix the Codices one by one. Any interest?

I suggest you check out this little forum created by HBMC and his gaming group, because it pretty much sounds exactly what you are talking about (they've also been posting about it in the proposed rules forum). http://www.revisitedproject.org/ On a broader scale (more than a gaming group) I think the idea is essentially a waste of time as you will likely never get strangers to agree on a big chunk of house rules IMO. That said, once the new Dakka's article system is up and running it would be the perfect format for just such a collaborative undertaking.

Possible, but if it wasnt for a dedicated group pf gamers, then stuff like the Sisters of battle exorcist would have never been made official. If it is good, people will see that and accept it. It just takes longer than if it were printed and shoved in your face as official, becuase it takes time for people to find it,readit, use it and then ultimatly possibly accept it. I say go for it. Back in the early days of 40K, the net had some really good articles on new home brewed stuff. Its generally looked down upon today because of fiascos such as the "Pan Fo", but there has been some really good stuff out there on sites that no longer exist that I really wish I had a copy of. You gotta start somewhere, and like HBMC, it takes awhile but could ultimatly be worth it. Never know until you do. I'll back you up, Orlanth.

Don't you be talking about the Pan-Fo now!
Actually good candidates for home brew lists would be: *LATD *Harlequins *Exodites *Spore dropping Nids *Necron renegades

This could be great and I see from that board that they are being careful not to let things like allied harlequin solitaires and imperial assassins with vortex and virus grenades sneak back into the rules.

The revisited project ( http://z11.invisionfree.com/40K_Revisited/index.php? ), is an interesting work in progress to do exactly what you are talking about. So far I've had quite a bit of fun working with the guys to iron out the rules. Now Yak may in fact be right about it being something you will never get other people to agree on playing. However, I still enjoy hashing out the rules, if for no other reason than to be able to say I've made a better game. That aside, I must say that game balance is a difficult thing to achieve once you sit down to try and hash it out. It is lots of work to make the system work properly.
