Ok, so I've been thinking.....Rhino APC, Leman Russ, Land Raiders, Standard Template Constructs......yadda yadda yadda!

If I'm an Imperial citizen I can't go blundering around Downtown Hive Primus in a Landraider with two fitted Playstations and a kiddie seat, can I?

So my question dear DakkaDakka Generals is of a creative nature, what do the home boys drive? If I'm doing a Hive Ganger group, or a PDF company, or even trying to create a Rouge Trader entourage what kinda vehicles should I be looking at? Obviously GW doesn't cater for this area, so it leaves a great void of creative Chaos to go wild in!! Personally I like the idea of the Wheel, it was good enough for Fred Flintstone it will work for a local PDF as well!

So any suggestions? WWII German armoured car anyone?

Also, whats the best way for working out armour stats and weapon rules? How many passengers? etc....

Ideas, people, ideas!

In the 40k fiction this really depends entirely on the society/planet Every planet (and probably every city on a planet) would have its own unique style of basic car/trolly etc.

I really think the world is your oyster here. You just get to go crazy and do what you like. Just remember to stick with the 'gothic tech' idea rather than true sci-fi designs (if you want it to fit in with the current universe).

ok, ok...I was fishing for inspiro'

But yes, I was thinking along those lines.....having said that thought I kind of like the idea of converting a 1/35 Abrams into a PDF mobile command....kind like that planets version of a Baneblade.....

GW's own kits are obviously slightly under scale compared to the figures. 1/48 scale vehicles match the figures fairly well. 1/35 scale are good for oversize vehicles.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

This company makes some nice 30s civilian cars and armored cars

http://www.companyb.biz/

so does this one:

http://www.sloppyjalopy.com/

And there are tons of 1/43 diecast cars out there, but most of the modern ones look, well too modern.

But here's an example:

I found these and thought they might make good PDF scout vehicles:

http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/35270kfz.222/index.htm

http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/35234m20armor/m20armor.htm

This last one might look a little to Hi-Tech for a simple PDF deployment, I'm not sure!

http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/list/35mm_img/35162m.jpg

All vehicles are 1/35 scale. I've taken the lengths given on the website and sized them next to a IG figure and with some Forge World makings and some plasti card I think I can transform these into a proper PDF low brow, low-tech weapons deployment platform or APC!

@ Kid Kyoto

Cool idea, you're right they do look a little modern ( contempory ).....need some spikes and skulls mayby??

Foul Dwimmerlaik

The gangs of Crowes World used hoverbikes to get around. Atleast from the pics in Rogue Trader.

But then again, the water sellers of that same world use giants who have scaffold on their shoulders to keep their cargo far above ground for safe transports as well.

Just a couple ideas GW has used in the past.

But as Yakface stated, the worlds your oyster. I can imagine combustion engines still being used in a mundane way.

If your looking for inspiration, I recommend picking up a copy of Rogue Trader. TONS of stuff in there.

yeah they're just a start, still need eagles, skull bosses from skeleton shields and all that jazz.

I like the WWII armored cars too.  I can see a 40k world where people just drive around in armored vehicles to go shopping.

But honestly what you want are the cars from Frank Miller/Geoff Darrow's Hard Boiled

In your house, rummaging through your underwear drawer

You could have Digga's and their ramshackle trukks and battlewagonz, Elf wannabees and their ground effect vehicles with neon spirit stones and iridescent thorn paint, to the Prayer Gangs and their porta-confessionals/assault parishes, Stealer cultists and their flash limos, to the barely tolerated chaos emos and their skull and spike encrusted hearses.

Everyone else either rides servitor driven rickshaws, functional but not so comfortable MVVW's, or the fricken bus.

The world is your oyster, my friend.

We've been told that the Chimera is the most common (military) vehicle in the 40k universe, and has been fitted out to run on everything from wood-fired steam pistons to nuclear power packs.

I've toyed with the ideas of a "savage" world militia, complete with steam-driven, wood-fired Chimerae.

Sure thing, I understand that something like the Chimera would be a military standard. However, reading about the Adeptus Mechanicus and its "slow delivery times" and just thought some back water fringe planet would have something a bit more....provincial

I have wondered why everything in the WH40K Universe seems to run on tracks. I'm no military expert, but are tracks the most effective way to cross terrain? If so why don't we use trackked vehicles exclusively in todays military? Is it a question of cost, i.e is it more expensive to construct and maintain a tracked vehicle over a wheeled?

I guess, based on the above questions it would make more sense to make the PDFs vehicles with wheels.....as it appears, in the WH40K universe at least, to be a step backwards!

That's just about right.  Tracks will get you over nearly any terrain and are essential for very heavy vehicles like tanks, APCs and mobile artillery.  But they are prone to breaking down so tracked vehicles are usually trucked or carried on trains to their area of operation and then go under their own power.

They're also much slower.

Thanks Kid Kyoto.....I guess that in the WH40K Universe they have supposedly overcome these issues like speed, cost? and reliability!

Great stuff, this means WHEELS, WHEELS, WHEELS!!!

Also, unless you're using rubber tracks, tracked vehicles tend to tear the crap out of streets.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1
