And for how much longer?

I almost bought the rule books today but I just might wait until
next week (wooo, big wait).

I'd like to know myself- I've started to worry they won't be allowed to renew the licence. Anyone know how long they've got one for?

As for being a core game, well, I'd say it depends on area. I've been in clubs of 20-30 people where only 2 play fantasy, but that doesn't mean it's not popualr, selling well and deserving of support.

It still ranks up there IIRC, and even if it gets dropped in the next few years so what? All you really need is the OR book, whatever supplement/models you want, and a group of people you like.

LotR appears to be a core game, and I don't see them dropping it anytime soon. Right now, it's probably their best game system.  It's in the GT circuit in the US, so I envision they are keeping it around.  iirc, someone said in the last year that the license was renewed for quite awhile.  If it makes money for GW and the Tolkien estate, they'll keep the license.  It looks like they've retooled after the movie drop-off and Jervis noted at Adepticon that Legions of Middle Earth and Ruins of Arnor both sold better than they expected.  He also noted that the minis appear to sell well in Europe to figure collectors/painters/non-gamers.

In the dark future, there are skulls for everyone. But only the bad guys get spikes. And rivets for all, apparently welding was lost in the Dark Age of Technology. -from C.Borer

Yes it is indeed a Core Game for GW and still manages to make a pretty penny for both companies. The main thing w/ the game is(at least in the US) a lot of people enjoy picking up the models to paint/collect but you don't see as many play as some people would like

You flatter me. But really, I'm just an ordinary guy. I put my pants on the same way anybody else does: I put a gun to the head of my manservant and bark Russian military commands at him until the poor blighter either figures it out or watches his brains exit his forehead.

Yes it's a core game. It plays best using historical scenario play, but the Legions of Middle Earth book has ten good general scenarios.

I've been collecting for 6 years now and still can't play all of the scenarios as written (but I'm close;P)

What do you mean you can't play them as written?

Lots of the supplements have "historical" refights that pit two set armies vs each other. That is, each army list is pre-made. As you can imagine, some of these army lists are quite huge (Helms Deep, Pelennor Fields...etc.)

Ok to explain the scenarios.

What I meant was that the historical refights, which I think there are about 100 now, can require a great variety of models. I can play about 75-80% of the historical refights as it stands, with the models that the scenario suggets. The rest I have to points match to try to play. When I used to work at GW I picked up a huge percentage of the models needed to play the historical refights, but I couldn't have done so (nor would I reccomend doing  so) without working for the company. The vast majority of scenarios call for irregular mixes of troops and often suboptimal forces (which reflect the scenario, but not regular play).

All the same I love the historical refights for thing like this

Good

Arragorn and Gimli

Evil

10 dunlendings, 20 Uruks, 5 beserkers, 1 Uruk Captain, 1 Dunlending captains.

Objective

Evil must break the causeway door down in 20 turns

Good must prevent the Evil forces from breaking the door down

If either good hero dies, the game is a draw, If both good heros die Evil wins.

Nice ugly little fight, the causeway is thin enough for the two heros to defend, but enough bad guys that bad luck should cause a thrill or two.

I think that being able to recreate certain "historical" events from the movies/books is one of the best parts of the LOTR miniatures game which is not found in a lot of (any?) other games.

If you're gonna play some generic battle, you're better off with 40K or WHF.

For LOTR, it is best to choose one favorite scene in the story and base your collection off of it.

Anyone remember the cool scale model of Gondor featured in WD300? Now THAT was cool!

As far as I can see, LOTR is here to stay. Though it doesn't seem to sell too well at my own local gamestore.

TYRANID ARMY and more for sale. Many Price Drops. 40K and More.
