Does anyone have any experience using the thudd gun from IA?  Is it worth an elite slot?

The Thudd Gun isn't. The Heavy Mortar on the other hand... you want those. Infernus Shells all the way!

Infernus Shells?

I don't have the IA book, but I would if I didn't have to shell out an arm, leg and firstborn child.

How about if I dont use infernus shells - Im not looking for the gimmick trick from an obscure IA book most dont have. Before committing to a big Forgeworld purchase i wanted to see if there are any others that had experience with either of these two models.

Oh the Infernus Shell isn't a gimmick. It's possibly one of the most powerful things in the game. You can Phase Out Necrons without killing a single one by just using Infernus Shells. They're a sure fire way to get beaten up by people you just met, and an excellent way to lose friends you've had for years. Fantastic weapons. Most stupid thing FW's ever written.

Anyway, as far as Thudd Guns go... they're nothing special. They just don't have the hitting power. Even ignoring Infernus Shells, having 3 Heavy Mortars as a single Elites choice is great - it's 3 R48 S6 AP4 Ordnance blasts a turn. You can really do a number on Tau, Guard, Orks and 'Nids, threaten some Eldar, and with concentrated fire hammer MEQ's.

Maybe I didn't phrase my question properly beforehand...

What're Infernus Shells?

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Infernus Shells: I dont know from the top of my head, but I do know they are broken.

Thudd Guns - Awkward rules, cost 10pts more. Its priced based on the belief that small templates are the r0xx0r. Unimpressive Ap. It can kill guard, if the follow on templates scattwer in your favour. Normally they 'walk' off in the wrong direction - just like the 2nd Ed Thudd gun.

Heavy Mortars - A griffon without a vehicle, also lacking the bunker bust ability. A good Tau and Eldar killer, firing a tried and tested no-nonsense large blast template. They are definate keepers for Eklites (Krieg only). I am seriously thinking of deploying some with my Cadians even though it will cost me a Russ.

To show you how far against the Thudd gun I am: I have two very old Thudd Guns, they used to have squat crew. I use mine as heavy mortars, never as Thudd Guns.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Infernus shell= if the template touches you, not kills anyone just wounds someone, that unit has to automatically fall back as long as they are not fearless. Really really nasty. Unless you are facing a fearless army. It is the IG version of fear of the darkness.

Let me clear up confusion, perhaps my own(?), but I think you have the Thudd Gun all wrong. You may be basing some of your assumptions off the test rules, which are different than the rules in AI5. The Thudd is a barrage weapon, as per the rules in the main book. The first template is placed, and the other 3 templates all base them selfs off that first template. There is no line of destruction, it basically forms a box-like shape when it all lands.

The point difference is also wrong. A IG Heavy mortar costs 25pts less than the Thudd, unless you add those oh so nifty Infernus shells, then it is 5 pts less. If you are a Kreig army, then they cost 5 points more, but you get to have 4 as a single choice...rather than a meager 3! >_<

That said, I agree with H.B.M.C. Heavy mortars in, Thudd Gun out unless i find myself with too much extra cash (i wish) and a whim to play them.

A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

Yes I only have the test rules. I didnt know they had been updated, not being able to afford Siege of Vraks.
