I'm underwhelmed by the new model line...they didn't redo any of the plastics which I think it's od considering the major overhaul any 40k release gets.

It was felt by the GW studio that the models didn't need updating, that they were fine as they are. However there is a persistent rumor that the High Elves will get some additional plastics later on.

I like the lions although they got weird pointy ears, long tails and plaited beards ... Yes I still like them finally an cheap alternative mount for every army. A lot of cool conversions will come with these lions.

The cats are the best thing to come out of the "new" high elves, though I'm surprised at how old a lot of the models look. Partially because a lot are re-releases, but also because of new sculpts done in the old style (shadow warriors, white lions). And the crack horses are still around!

Yep, this is another High Elf release that is more of an update to make the list competitive, have to update a few things. I think the plastic hero kits and chariot is nice, not sure on the dragon, but it is all better than the past.

It's definitely an improvement, still the length of my painting cue and the preview of the Dark Elf Cold One are enough for me to hold back on them.

The lions are very nice. That's two animal sculpts that actually look like animals in a row! The lion and then the cold one! What in the name of Trish Morrisson is going on?

I understand why GW didn't re-do the existing plastics, but too bad. The High Elf Archers and Spearmen are uninspired & uninspiring, IMO. They aren't BAD bad, but they are blah. And the spearmen have robot monkey arms. And the pageboy haircuts on the archers...oy. The plastic chairoteers have more grace and character, it would have been nice to see the rank and file get an upgrade.

The High Elf Spell of Putting Things On Top Of Other Things - is that a 7+ or 9+ to cast?

We got High Elf plastics early, it makes me wonder if a High Elf army book was scheduled for '05 but put back. We got a lot of new stuff out alone.

I find that High Elf magi like to make their stand in odd places. The miniatures themselversdlook decent though.

Swordmasters need a plastic kit so the pose can be improved.

9+ to cast, but if you take the Book of Extra Large Print (20 points) you can cast PToToOT on a 3+

Like the Empire release, not a single metal figure in the box; unlike the Empire, most of these figures are old.  Obviously aimed at brand new HE players.  I will be picking up some of the new stuff, but I can wait a while.

Can't believe they didn't put the dragon kit in there - that looks cool, and is all plastic by the looks.

The Lion Chariot can be built as either type.

Sprues are still based off of the old edition. Until they recut them, that is what we are stuck with. Not a huge problem.

HBMC they sorted this as best they could, with the infantry. Better than putting the blinkers on and still selling 16 of each plus whatver else. I would like to see the Battalion box have 20 spearelves and 12 archers.

24 archers and 30 spearelves make sense as totals. They should have done what was done for the Empire set and sold 12 Silver Helms, depicted as two units of six. What find odd is that 30 spearelves doesnt divide up from four elf sprues. Maybe is is thirty two after all.

Note how the site shows Silver Helms as a rank of five with an incomplete rear rank of three. I was hoping on seeing the army deal that High Elves had a special cavalry four models wide special rule. Though actually I think that should apply to all cavalry, and monsters.

Off topic: since Warhammer now has at least one army composed of really big models, GW should go to ranks based on base sizes. 20mm base, five models to a rank; 25mm base, four models to a rank; 40mm base, 3 models to a rank; and 50mm base, no rank bonus possible.

This would make ranked ogres viable, and allow armies such as Lizardmen the option of ranking up their Kroxigor, it would keep cavalry units and larger infantry like orcs and chaos with the same frontage as smaller-based units, and it would still allow units of chariots or rhinoxen, while keeping them from becoming more powerful.


Back on topic: It's not a bad army box, considering it will give you enough core choices for a 2000 point army, two of your specials, and two of your basic rares. Along with four heroes. And you can build your third core choice, Seaguard, by combining the archer & spearman sprues. It is really a good deal for someone just starting High Elfs. It is just not a deal that will have much (any?) appeal for players who already own HE. I already own a huge amount of Empire stuff, but I bought the new army box when it came out. I own enough HE to field a 2000 point army... but the contents of this box won't give me enough new things to justify the cost.

Have you noticed- based on the store website, HE now have only 3 core choices, and they are all infantry?

As much as I like the new commander/mage plastics, they (mostly just the commanders/princes) do seem to be suffering pretty badly from "over-sized helmet"-issues.
I mean, I'm a fan of pointy-helmets and all for elves, but these are a little bit over the top IMHO.

I still don't understand why they redid the Shadow Warriors. I thought the previous (current) versions look quite great as is (which reminds me that I should pick some up before they're no longer available). Pity that they redid these guys and not the Core elves choices.

At least that new Dragon seems really nice, and the Dragon Princes are still nice models.

you poor high elf players never seem to catch a break, theres always someone making fun of your army and now you automatically lose any street cred if you show up with white tigers.

The bottom 2 are new sculpts.. right?

GW not upgrading the basic plastic sets is a definitely a big downer for me. Altough from what I've gathered from the rumors, the "powerbuilds" of the new he-book might use just the minimum core troops, I think I'm gonna wait to see how the new VC's will look like with the (hopefully) upgraded plastics for my next FB army.

Those guys are also known as being ambiguously gay, much like High Elves. It's another thing they have in common.

The releases are nice, but seem a little underwhelming.

Does anyone else get the impression that High Elves are being completely overshadowed by Apocalypse and Orks?

In the forums and stores I've been in, High Elves seem to barely get noticed amongst everything else.

Even the leaked models from Dark Elves and Vampire Counts are getting almost as much attention.

The Elf models aren't all that amazing though. There are a few scattered, but since Jes left the High Elf scene there haven't been that many amazing High Elf models. Which is odd, because I think that is one of the lines that really can shine with a good sculpter. More people are waiting on the book than the models. If the army can become viable in different configurations then people will pay more attention to the models.

Apoc and Orks have been something most of us have desired for quite some time. Using anything and everything including Forgworld is something a lot of groups have been doing for awhile, but it was clunky. Now we get a method for our madness. It just brings a lot of the universe together in one huge orgy of destruction. This has been needed for some time.

Orks, well... with the rumours of good rules, and good models along with the long wait we have had, would make us a lot more excited than about another High Elf "update".
