Hi all,

I recently started collecting a Death Korps army and have finally got round to painting one. I have to stress its not quite finished but I thought I would post a pic anyway because i'm pretty happy with it so far. I've attempted to go for a more gritty look to reflect the fluff. The boots have had sand added to them to represent thick mud which has been spashed on the bottom of the coat.

Not sure I agree with the sand on the feet.  The scale doesn't feel right.  I think you'd be better just keeping with a very splotchy mud paint instead of adding the sand.  Right now it just looks like he's got a fuzzy foot.

Overall though, he's looking great.  A few washes of grim (blacks and browns) and you could have a really solid model.

Thanks for the comment. I see what you mean about the scaling now, it may look better once its painted fully. The light up in Scotland isn't great today and had to use a flash, thats why some of the colours look a bit bright aswell (the psychodelic skull) as an example.

I agree with Grey Death about the sand. In scale those pieces of sand would be about finger sized in terms of their diameter. It's pretty tough to pull off muddy residue on a 28mm foot model. Tanks are a bit different by the nature of their apparent scale.

Otherwise I have to say it's a great model.

Let's see more!

That's what Vallejo Sandy Paste is supposedly great at - scale sand and dirt.

Hope this isn't reviving it or anything but i've finished the guy so thought i'd post the final pics. He's going into a local competition on Saturday so fingers crossed.

The pictures are washing out much of the detail. From what I can see though:

I would go for a wash or two on the metallics. A mix of brown and black washes could make them look a bit more weathered, which given the theme, would be a good thing.
I still stand by the sand on the feet thing though, it's just way out of scale and looks off.
The coat looks like it could use a quick wash of a darker color in some spots too.

Overall though it's a commendable job. Good luck with the competition!

I would love to hear how you painted him - though I agree, a few washes to give some "grit" would improve the overall look.

What colors did you use? what kind of blend is on the trenchcoat?

Very nice, apart from the weird stuff on the feet. It would be worth the time and effort to get rid of that if possible.
