Looking around for interesting (and affordable!) City of Death/Urban/Apocalyptic conversion bits/kits and was wondering if 1/35 is the right scale to be looking for? Also, is one source generally better than others? Verlinden, Tamiya, etc.? (Please excuse my ignorance of all things historical/model building outside of GW product... ) Also, is there a good online source for said scale models? Thanks for your help!

1:35 is big (54mm). It's still good for 28mm tanks though, they're just huge tanks, as opposed to tiny little 40k "main" battletanks. I've got a 1:35 Merkeva ready to go. You might prefer 1:48.

So, 1:48 matches up better to GW 40K "Heroic Scale" than 1:35?

The big problem is there is no correct "scale" for 40k. I think the closest I've seen is 1/40th but those kits are really rare. If you're going to be building super-heavies pick up 1/35 (a stug makes a great shadowsword), but if you're going to be building normal sized things like trucks try 1/48 with some GW stuff tacked on.

What foda said! Though most of 1/35 kits lend nice bits for basing and scratchbuilds

Thanks guys... There is a lot of 1/35 stuff on eBay,some 1/40 and a TON more 1/48 stuff. Only problem I have is I have NO idea what these kits "should" cost. Can't tell if I'm getting a deal, or getting hosed... Still, I'll give a couple of kits a shot, see how it goes. (Looking for stuff to make a Defense Laser installation, of course!)

I'd go 1/35 for smaller tanks (Char Bs, Bren Carriers, Italian Tankettes, etc.) to base around 40k MBTs, or 1/48 regular tanks (shermans, etc.) for the same. 1/35 is a good scale for Ork Trukks though.
Model kits will be more expensive depending on kit detail, number of parts, newness (i.e. when the kit was first developed), etc. So a repackaged 1/35 Stuart kit from the 1970s that has a small part count will probably be ~$15-20, whereas the 1/35 new WWII kit with the parts count in the several hundreds, individual track-links, and photoetched parts will run you closer to $30-40. The Tamiya 1/48s tend to run ~$15-30 (cheapest being things like jeeps and command cars, more expensive being things like the KV-1 and other heavy MBTs), have white-metal hulls, individual track-links, and split the difference on detail (good outside detail, but a lack of interiors, crew, etc.)

Here's a picture of how 1/48 diecast cars compare to GW stuff Appologize for th quality but I think the sizes at least are clear.

Just a nitpick, but Tamiya hulls are die-cast steel. Or at least something hard enough to require high-strength power tools to modify. It gives them a nice beefy weight (and it's nice when your suspension axles are guaranteed to be straight), but for 40k uses, you can't convert them at all. 1/35 is a very ubiquitous scale in military ground vehicle kits, and I've found a lot of uses for things like stowage, techy bits and some personal equipment (a lot of it for Ogryns).
