As the saying goes, you need two train engines to stand on. Therefore I´m going to build another, bigger, more militarised train engine. Like all great undertakings it starts with a fancy design: Which gets translated into a rickety pre-production mock-up: Detail of the soon-to-be furnace door: Now, the last one took almost a year to build. On the one hand I´ve got more experience with this subject and better tools and equipment. On the other hand I´ve got much less spare time and less room to work. All in all it will probably not go much faster this time around either. I´ll keep you posted.

Coolness. Really interesting to see how the second one comes along and in relation to the first. What else have you been up to? Take alook around too. Lots of craxy stuff going on in the blogs.

Ah, it´s always the same story: After losing interest and inspiration for a couple of months, I then get several tempting ideas. Looking over some of the newer Empire stuff, namely the Wizards and Flagellants, conjured up visions of Inquistor warbands. The new Black Ork sprues just seem to beg to be converted into archaic/chaotic Terminators. And since the new Ogryns are...sub-optimal, I´m pondering an appropriate Oger-conversion.
The last one might actually coincide with the new train engine, as I´ve thought about using an Oger as basis for a stoker-servitor, but we´ll have to see.

Your stuff is always a mixture of inspiring/awesome/intimidating AND I'd love to see a way to make the more "archaic" Terminators that show up in the HH art books so... I vote you go this way. Using Black Orc sprues? Really? This I have to see! Well, OK, this I'd love to see... Please?

Awesome! I really liked the last train thread, followed pretty much from the beginning. (Is someone painting it yet?)
In your concept picture I really like the rear section, it reminds me of the Armoured Transport in Aliens.
Does the front of the Train have to be that rounded bullet shape? If not have you considered a more aggressive looking front section, like the front of an Imperial Battle cruiser for example.
Anyway I look forward to watching another one of these come together! Good luck =D

40k Battle Trains? Awesome. 40k Battle Trains by ESDK? Pure gold. And now a very random note: Last night I had this dream (which was actually pretty sad, but we'll delve no deeper!) and at one point I found myself in a bar sitting at a table with Rob Zombie and his wife Sherri. Rob was checking out this big hardback book of modeling, specifically an article by ESDK about how he did his biggerized chaos termies. He had a set of calipers and was measuring Sherri - her shoulder, arm, neck, etc. Apparently he wanted to make a 1:1 suit of chaos terminator armor for his wife, based off of ESDK's designs! Then the barman walked over and said "Oh, maybe this'll help," opened up this case behind the bar and pulled out ESDK's WIP chaos termies pictured in the book! You know, the ones that ESDK painted up here in reality ... So best of luck to ESDK with his train and Mr. Zombie with his terminator armor - Salvage

Salvage, I was going to invite you and some Portal guys over when I finish my basement gaming room. You, however, are not allowed to sleep over. The combination of our bizzare dreams would obviously tear a hole in reality, and create a warp space over lay. And demons never take off their shoes when they enter your house...
Trains are awesome, but I fully expect you to make an Apocalypse sized table with hills and terrain suitable to have two massive trains running through to destroy the enemies of Holy Terra. We can count on you for that, right?
I will take as even exchange a properly fitted suit of terminator armor. You make da call!

The crew compartment starts to take shape: The main problem right now is to figure out how to construct the cabin so it can still be taken apart for painting and to look inside once it´s done. Unlike the first one the cabin roof is not detachable. Maybe it will suffice to keep the side walls separate and magentize them but they are also needed to shape the whole structure in the first place. The next big step will be to build the main chassis beam. I´ve pretty much decided to use Lego Technic parts in it to provide some degree of precision. I´ll try to actually get the wheels and pistons etc. to work this time so some machined parts will be essential.

I mentioned the idea of using an Oger as stoker-servitor. The first steps have been taken:
And the second Oger from the sprue won´t go to waste either:
It´s going to be a touching mini-diorama of an Ogryn mourning over the broken body of his commanding officer.

In a way, your projects are really depressing. I keep looking at it thinking "I don't like modeling enough to do anything that big and awesome." I glue some skulls and bits together for a familier, and it takes me a few hours. This would be the better part of my remaining life.
The shame for my inadequacies is never ending in your presence.

Driving around on a huge steam powered train isn´t so much about the transportation but rather a statement. The same thinking that only allows one to consider something a proper vehicle if it´s mostly made from cast iron pretty much demands that any armament operates by flinging large quantities of metal at your enemies.
So, those are in fact not multilasers but rather assault cannons.

A bit more detail on the crane, closed the roof of the cabin, cleaned up the piping, some work on the boiler lid and last but not least a master for the wheels, all in a rather mediocre picture:
For the problem of accessing the interior of the cabin I´ve decided to simply keep the cabin separate from the floor so the whole assembly as it is now can be taken off. The side walls will be separate as well.
I´ve tried a different technique for the wheels than last time. For the first train I built a master out of plasticard. This time I cut it from styrofoam. While this is obviously much less sturdy it is also considerably easier to cut and since it will only be used to build the mold, sturdiness really isn´t needed.

Ha! I never read that bottom line until just now, when I was going to ask you if the ogre was going to be stuffing an officer into the fire to stoke the train engine

I can SOOOO not take credit for that bad boy. As much as I would love to. I found it on the GW web site. It's a part of this article!
I saw it and had to come post some quick inspirational work so that ESDK could thief some of the ideas used on that one ^_^.
