So, I have connected. Is there anywhere within the village where I can get some basic gear/trade with villagers for resources?
So far i have some food, iron, and wood. Anything that has been taken has been replaced - dont worry

I have taken a small cut-off plateau at X555/Z655 and am in the process of converting it into a small outpost. If anyone owns this bit I will gladly stop.

Also I have stolen a bed from one of the inns, but I will return it as soon as possible, and add in a chest of food as interest.

Did you not fully explore Spawntown? There's all sorts of stuff around there- farms for just about everything, including sheep (though I admit the sheep farm is a little hard to find)- a villager trading hall, iron farm, even mushrooms underground.

you really need to figure out your password, it's sad to see the mob bob farm go unfinished and we need a track launcher for the south tunnel

and my guardian farm is better than yours it's worth finding the password just to see the storage system I built

we should really make up a nice map of spawn showing off where to get all the starting stuff. maybe even put up a guide book on the bullitain board.

once you find your first 3 diamonds, instead of making a pick with them, you can visit my god tool shop under the giant pickaxe at spawn and buy a diamond pick for 1 diamond. It's a great bargain, I sell picks, axes and shovels with max enchantments for just 1 diamond. you won't find a better deal anywhere

There weren't zombies eating the traders, were there?

What annoys me is that nobody has put any Butchers in the trading areas- there's all sorts of meat farms at Spawn, but sorting the butchers out of the central area is a pain sometimes. I mean, I've gotten like, 4 or 5 stacks of Emerald blocks just by selling raw chicken to this one guy.

There has been butchers in there before. I think someone gets rid of them when both trades get locked. Someone else (or maybe the same person) replaces them and they vanish as well eventually.

I prefer selling crops myself, since they have more trades to let me reset them. Farming the entire farm beneath the white house using a Fortune III axe gets about 2 stacks of emerald blocks. Though that takes over an hour to harvest and sell so... maybe not the best method of getting emeralds.

if it needs more butchers just go to the iron farm and pull the switch to send the villagers to the trading hall. Get a few butchers than make sure to turn the switch back to killing them. At my tower I have a motto "suffer not the butcher to live" but I don't mess with the ones at spawn.

You could probably just move a couple over to your chicken breeder, just don't use doors to keep them in place.

Uh oh. I saw an iron golem at the Spawn villager market hall and slew it, did some exploring and came back and another iron golem had spawned. No one else was playing during that time.

Just use the classic one high opening villagers hut.

Also if you wanted fancy and kinda horrible. Use sticky pistons as a stack, and have one villager ir a butchen inside.
Soon as its trades all fail eventually. Kill and hit a leaver despensing a new butcher into the slot.

Aw hell, if you're going to pass that close between Anvildude and myself, I'm going to have to get off my butt and finish my city so it's presentable.

Parrot hunters can look for them in a jungle around 12095, 12433. I caught a few there, but lost them due to hazards along the way to a mansion. Someone built a nether portal nearish to it @ 12005, 11972. I'll be heading that way in a little while to get more birds. Sure wish they could be bred.

You're welcome

What hazards? take the portal and it's a flat run back until you get to one set of stairs, then it's flat again so the parrots should ride nicely on your shoulder the whole way.

Remember, when making large constructions, DECORATE. Nobody likes cobblestone single-block walls, but a nice wide stone or brick or wood-and-stone structure can be quite nice looking.

Yes.

Stone walls broken up with stairs, upper levels stepped out, wooden tower corners, using hatches on the fighting level gaps.

Even brick roof towers and more, step the roof out so its got overhangs and not straight up all the way etc.

Also.. Follow the terrain, work with it, far more interesting than the flat terrain classic stuff.

I built a few Minecraft castles...

I enjoy the terraforming I find it relaxing.

getting geared up is easy, use the tree farm for a bit.
harvest the crops at spawn & replant, check the chests at the animal farms for some food. don't forget to sheer the sheep for a bed.
go to the iron farm and build all your stuff or visit the blacksmith and get some random enchanted armor.
see if you can trade up the extra iron and crops at the trading hall to get some emeralds
hope the diamond armor shop is stocked and buy the armor, or get a diamond chest & tools from the villagers.

I'm not sure if anyone trades bows, there might be some in the prismarine house next to the trading hall.
arrows are under the tree farm, there is a conveniently located skeleton spawner below it.

after you've mined and gotten your first diamonds, visit the god tool shop and get ubber picks for 1 diamond.

mine up some obsidian, trek through the nether into the wild lands and build a portal.

or if you want to move into a forest mansion or water temple there might be map makers in the trading hall which should lead you to new lands.

This server is full of megabuilders and terraformers.

I regularly remove entire mountains for my builds.

There's a few places that you should visit if you enjoy those sorts of large-scale builds.

Chasmholm, like Ian said, though you'll probably want him around to give you the tour- it's a confusing place to navigate, otherwise.

The Increasingly Inaccurately Named Grey Mesa, for another (that's my place)- it's simpler to navigate, but can still be confusing and dangerous without someone who knows their way around.

The whole Nether system is pretty impressive, Sir Ralphy's tower is a marvel of automation (and lag), and there's a bunch of other abandoned megabuilds scattered around.
