does anyone use any apocalypse formations/datasheets in normal games of say 2000 pts, and/or would you mind if your opponents did?

I have a vindicator linebreaker squadron that I'll be building for my chaos army but I know I won't be playing apocalypse all the time. I know my buddies that I play against won't mind, but would filling up all 3 heavy slots with the same thing gimp my army? Would taking the formation make them too overpowered for a normal game? Would it be too much of a points sink to be able to fill the army with other things?

And I don't mean just for the vindicators but any kind of formation in general... Would you mind playing against 3 falcons that use the cloudstrike rules in a normal game? Or an entire marine company? Or 5 deep striking carnifexes? As long as the guy still builds his army to the force org chart, would you allow Apocalypse stuff in your normal games?

Any and all variety is welcome on my tabletop. Just let it be known beforehand if you are doing something that isn't in the standard vanilla tournament variety.

A mate and I tried Apocaypse rules in a 2000 pt game. I used the Subterranean Swarm datasheet and he used the Seer Council datasheet. We both picked an asset, put all our models on at the same time, didn't place objectives, and rolled for first turn. The game was fun. We both enjoyed the experiment and will do it again. It was a close match. I was the only left with models by the end end- three genestealers.

I guess that depends. if you use a linebreaker formation you'll get the BIG template if I'm not mistaken, and in not-apocalypse games this could get very ugly for some armys. But I suppose the stuff we get in IA:Apocalypse should work nice, since there's a lot of small FW stuff in it like those über-sporemines and the spiked chaos thingy.

haha that's funny... I have to be sneaky when I post at work so I type my message i an email and then paste it in, but I pasted in the one for my sister about my nephew's birthday... maybe I sent her what I meant to post here.. hmm

what I meant to say was, "Yeah but all you have to do is glance 1 tank and then you can't use the big template anymore"

I guess you can use them and keep the game balanced. What I'm not so sure about is as where they are legal or not in a tournament.

They are definately not leagal in tournaments. You can show up with the units from the data sheet if you can fit them in your force org, but you will not gain any special benifit from the formation. You'll also probably lose comp points (if there are any) for haveing several identical units.

That aside, I wouldn't allow one of my opponents to use the formation rules in a standard game, they are a bit over the top outside of apoc games.

Great question Necros. A mate and I are usually quite restricted by time, and have had a few experiments like this. Another way we played was 500 points, no FOC, and go nuts. Sort of like the old RT days.

He played 10 Death Company with Jump packs lurking around Mephiston.

I Had a Chief Librarian with a 10-Man Termie squad.

Played on a 2x2 board. The game included 1 strategic asset each, chosen at random.(Shuffled the cards we downloaded and laminated)

Mephiston had 1 wound left, and no buddies, and wiped me out on turn 6.

We had a ball. Basically, If you wanted to field 4 Dreads against my 8 Land speeders, you just go for it.

Really? You honestly think something like a Linebreaker Squadron is over the top?

Keep in mind that all the formations that get special Strategic Assets wouldn't get them in regular 40K, as those are Apoc only rules, but for the ones who just get an extra special rule, or for things like Super-Heavies, you honestly think they'd be OTT?
