My bits box is starting to look a little lean, especially after converting my ork army. But with more and more models going to plastic, and less available to bits order from GW, where can I get some? Are there online sites that have bits ordering, GW's site is confusing, and I looked through it for 30 minutes for bits before giving up in frustration. Also are there any websites that sell the plastic bits cut off the sprues and sold seperatley? There are some nice ones I want out there, and at the same time I dont want to pay 12 dollars for a plastic sprue for a single piece that would realistically cost less than 2 if taken without the rest of the sprue.

If they have the range/items you want, I've always preferred Battlewagon Bits (www.bwbits.com) for plastic things

If you are in the UK (or US and want to import), then I should take this opportunity to pimp one of our advertisers. Keep watching the banners for 'Need Warhammer 40k Bits?'. It will take you to the A&M Model Company ebay store and they have a pretty good range.

There are also a number of eBay bits sellers out there. I happen to like buying from Blackdagger Games (eBay ID: window-box) who offers a large selection of bits in both auction and store format. I have yet to be disapointed and the prices are better than what BWBits is offering these days.

dont you find that buying bits through any of these regular sources a little pricey?

US$7 for a termie assault-cannon is getting a little crazy!

then workout - 25usd for box of assault marines - and they are selling "JUST THE LEGS" for 10usd - often more

i have a decent collection of SM bits - a lot I got free from other players - who pretty much dont want to do conversions - aren't bits mad like me or just couldnt be bothered asking for cash for the few bits.

but the rest of my stuff is off BW & window-box & a few other ebay sellers. But often the bits i really really want/need are just too expensive - and it works out better if i buy a box set, nip the one or two bits i want and sell the rest... actually if you work out buying a battle force or something like that and sell it sprue by sprue online you end up making some cash.

now i know this is how these guys make their money - but surely they have REAL jobs and this is just a sideline to support this mad-money gobbling hobby...

didnt mean to get into a lil rant there, but im so starting to buy boxes, strip the bits i want and sell the rest... bring the bits trade prices down a touch to something a lil more reasonable.

There's always the Dakka Swap Shop for bitz trades, or Bartertown for a dedicated trade site.

The bits you want are expensive because they are the bits everyone wants. Assault cannons for terminators cost 7$+ because it costs 50$ to buy one in a set, and everyone wants two per squad for the most part. Though you can make some money back if you sell the spare bitz, most gamers want to collect minis, not sell them, so having to somehow get rid of all those peices is more work than they want to do. It's the same reason people buy food at a restaurant when they could make the same meal at home for less.

I heartily recommend you buy some boxes and sell them for bits though. Competition is always healthy.

If the bit is expensive it is usually still far cheaper to buy it individually than what it would cost to buy the sprue/box it comes from, as Wehrkind pointed out. If it's something no one wants than the cost is usually not too bad.

As an example, I eventually want to build an IG mortar army variant of my normal gunline. Not really competitive, but fun to play. A squad of mortar teams is $35 NIB. The BWBits cost is something like $14.29 for the same product before subtracting parts I already have. The direct order costs on the crew alone using GW bits order would be $18. Now, if you want to build extra Lascannons from bits . . . it costs quite a bit more because more than a few people want the same thing.

Any idea for german fellas to get some nice bits? I also use battlewagon bits, but especially metal bits and/or bigger parts are a no-go for me.
The first because of unavailability and letter due to shipping (20$? The euro is not that strong!)

the Euro - man - try using South African Rands - R6.7 to the USD, R10 to the Euro, R13.7 to the Pound... i dont even want to hear about the weak Euro...

But try Ebay - or just stalk local players and offer then a couple a euro for the bits they arent using.
