I am hazy on the 'counts as' ruling.

Spider Rider models are obviously muy, muy cheap nowadays. If you use all spider riders as standing in for wolf riders, is that "legal"?

I doubt you could go to a GT and say, "these spider riders are really wolf riders."

But in a regular game, as long as you tell your opponent before the game starts, who cares? Just don't have spider riders that are proxies for wolf riders, and spider riders that are really spider riders, in the same list.

It's proxying and not 'legal' per se.

Personally, I would have absolutely no problem with using them as a stand-in though.

If you were my buddy and wanted to use them in a couple of test games, before buying wolfies, it’d be fine.

But in a random pickup game or a tournament match, it’d make me a bit unhappy. It looks like laziness/unwillingness to buy and properly represent the unit, regardless of what your actual motivation is.

If you were building a spider-themed army, with lots of conversions, AND were not fielding the actual spider-rider unit for some reason (thus avoiding confusion about which spider riders were which), I’d swallow it more easily, but even then I’d wonder why you weren’t using the actual proper unit rules.

It's also worth noting that Spider Riders are actually a pretty good unit. They're cheap and although they're slower, the ability to ignore difficult terrain allows them to pull off some nifty surprises.

Wolf Riders got their points increased from last edition, so it's not a no-brainer choice between them.

i did a all spider army and came up with that problem but in the end i made the ultimate compromise.....hairy (okay really hairy) spiders!

I would agree with mostly what has been said. Unless it is a themed army with a difference between normal spider riders and wolf riders (not just a paint job) I would say no. This is the same thing as taking a unit of High Elf Spearmen and using them as Phoenix Guard, they might have the same look but are complete different units.

However if you wanted to lets say use the spiders as squigs or something of the sort then I think you can squeeze them in there if modeled correctly as there is nothing that they can be confused for.

I would see no problem with it...as long as you don't mix the two units in a list.

I play an all Night Goblin Army and use Spiders as Wolf Riders. The trick is that I don't have any Spider Riders in my list so ther eis no confusion. I have the units converted up so that it is Night Goblins riding them. I figure that, living in caves, the Night Goblins are more likely to ride spiders than wolves.

Point of that ramble, if you don't mix the units into a list then I see no issue for it. You are using them as a counts as, and as long as they are modeled differently than, straight out of the box, Spider Riders you should be fine. I've used mine in some tournaments and I've had no issues.

I don't see it as being a huuuge deal.

You could convert them somehow, make them meaner looking, or make your normal spiders based in forest terrain and your wolves on plains terrain.

Be sure to check with a tourney organizer before hand.

The wolves look like a lump of gak they pressed into a plastic mould...on top of that they don't match NGs. Even if you replace the top of the Wolf Riders with NGs it looks out of place due to the lack of robes on the bottom half.

I don't field the wolves because they are horrendous models.

I dont care if this is major threadomancy the wolf riders are very good models and your just too lazy/cheap to sculpt on some cloaks
