I got to try AT-43 this last weekend and enjoyed it. I don't have the book at this point, but I'll be building a UNA army. A friend of mine says I can have his Steel Troopers, 2 Toads, & TACarms. What would be a good 1000pt staring force based around these units? Could a Wing trooper squad fit into it pretty well?

Thanks in advance

What you're being given seems to be a pretty good start to a decent army.

But I must ask what type of TACarms and what armaments do you have for your toads? How many steel troopers and what armaments do they have? Also, which subfaction would you like to play, if any?

Those 4 units you mentioned though just top 1000 points, no matter what configuration they are.

Here is an outstanding army building program for you that is free. "Easy AT-43"

If my guess is right, and you have alot of Laser weapons, then that amounts to tons of Anti vehicle weaponry in 1000 points.

I think that wing troopers are a pretty cool option that gives you some much needed speed that otherwise isn't really present in the UNA.

I believe they are Steel Tacarms and the toads both have laserguns and one set of grenade launchers. The Troopers were 9 guys with two missile launchers. These might be the guys from the Damocles box set.

I have no idea what subfaction.

My most common opponents will be Karmans and Red Blok. What I'll be getting seems to be good vs the Karmans. But I'll need some anti-infantry weapons for the Red Blok.

Indeed. Thats where those grenade launchers will come in handy.

Definitely slap both of those grenade launchers onto a toad to make a Lancelot. Its a nice vehicle and cheap as well. If you put targeters on the Steel TACarms, then you can use the indirect fire of the lancelot without having LOS from the toad to the target. Red blok taking cover? Not with a Lancelot!

I would recommend something like this for a starter army using what you have:

It goes over 1000 points just a little bit, but not a huge issue. I also recommended the "M.Ind" platoon pattern since you have a couple vehicles for the list. I am not sure if you have mechanics or medics for the steel troopers, but I assumed not and didnt add any since there is a high probability that these came from the damocles set.

Hope that helps ya a bit.

Gah! I just finished rereading Crimson Devil's original post again and just realized that he said he doesnt have the book yet* so here is the advantages and disadvantages of the "M.Ind" platoon pattern:

M.Ind descrition:
The Military Industrial Complex equips the glorious U.N. soldiers with powerful combat technologies.

Advantage:
Every armored fighting vehicle of the company gets the "Repair" ability. At the beginning or at the end of the activation of its unit, it can repair a friendly armored fighting vehicle within 2.5 cm, including itself. The armored fighting vehicle repaired recovers 1 SP in a location picked by the player. The location chosen may be a piece of equipment previously destroyed.

Disadvantage:
The company is defeated if all its armored fighting vehicles are destroyed.

*I am assuming both the rulebook and the UNA book

[edit]

Not that you need more AT, but here is a cheap way to get a useful 350 points into the army with the simple addition of a card (warning, this is used for special missions, so get permission first before you use).

Rules:
Any U.N. player can request the orbital support of the UNSS Battleaxe for 350 A.P. The player adds the cruiser's card to his activation sequence (or with the reinforcements unit cards), just as if the UNSS Battleaxe was a unit.
The activation of this card costs 1 LP and triggers an orbital gun blast.
This is a locked shot.
It is not possible to use an artillery strike in the same turn.
The UNSS Battleaxe is not a unit.

Orbital Strike:
Accuracy: 3+
Attack rate/Re-rolls: 3/0
Area of effect: -
Penetration/Damage: 17/1

My sister's name is Una. Man, that thread title with Hellfury's name beside the last post made me go "WTF?"

(Especially since "starting" is how we say "going to fight with" over here.)

Thanks, Hellfury. I'll have the books sometime this weekend. Then I can finally read all of this stuff.

Where do I get such a card?

@ Da Boss; Nope, not looking to fight your sister. She would probably kick my ass.

Don't mess with Irish chicks.

IF (and thats a pretty big IF) you can find them, get Cry Havoc Issues #12-15. Those 4 issues contain everything AT-43 related for campaign supplements, extra cards, etc. Any issues before that are basically AT-43 fluff quips and AT-43 previews, hence not need to get those.

These are basically Rackham's version of what GW's white dwarf should be.

You know, actual content and articles worth a damn as opposed to an ad rag.

Dont worry, Da Boss. I am pretty sure I wouldnt "start" anything with your sister considering she is irish and would kick my 1/4 irish butt. She completely out irishs me.

Ha! Then both your sister and his sister would beat down
on you, and not in a good way (if there's such a thing with
sisters).

After a bit of refinement, I think I have a better platoon pattern following the "Cent Com" pattern for you that goes under the points previously mentioned, and gives you more LP and a higher authority to work with. You don't get the free repair ability for your striders like you did with the M.Ind platoon pattern, but you do get free sergeants. You have to have officers leading your units, otherwise you will have to pay 1 LP every time you wish to activate the unit. The downside is less harsh than the M.Ind is as well. Just beware of snipers.

Cent Com description:
Central Command leads the White Stars armies and takes them to victory.

Advantage:
During the company building, each unit can change a standard fighter into a sergeant for free.

Disadvantage:
A unit without an officer must roll a Morale test for each of its activations.

I should be able to try this on Saturday. I'll let you know how it goes.

What size games do you normally play and how would you suggest I expand this army?

Thanks

Size games? 2000 points, just to play in the scenarios in the book.

But....I really like to play bigger games based around objectives of one type or another.

I think 4500 points is great fun, but don't expect people to collect that much unless they love the game as much as I do.

To expand your army to 2000 points (geared towards beating up Soviets and Monkeys) I would say add:

  • 1 squad of shock troopers with G-packs (not yet released)

  • Another Lancelot

  • 1 squad of shock TACarms

  • 1 squad of steel troopers with volcano guns.

  • I would also try to find room for a Defender Cobra (not M8), its a pretty good strider.

Lots of dead apes this weekend. I was able to protect my toads with terrain most of the game. His K fighters failed to do much damage on the only shot they managed to get on me. I pinned his Anakongas in place with the Steel troopers and then flanked him with the toads and Tacarms. On turn three it was all over.

Having four units to his two was a significant advantage. We also used the GW city fight terrain which helped me protect my advance.

We plan on trying a 1500 pt battle next week if we can get it in.

Sweet. I'm liking the way this is looking for me. I'm also starting UNA, and so I've been thinking about what to pick up. Have the Damocles set (I'm trying to ensnare my brother into playing with a game or two), and a Steel Trooper attachment box. I was thinking maybe another unit of STs and some Tac-Arm Jammers.

Are the Deathdealers any good? Their lack of heavy firepower seems to put them at a disadvantage.
