I've been playing 40k for 10 years now. I consider myself a huge fanboi. I used to have the 6' Black Templar cutout in my room, I have the collector's edition Apocalypse backpack, I have the collector's edition Marine codex. I'm not trying to stroke myself here, I'm just trying to make the point that I love this game, the fluff, and everything else. However, it is becoming quite apparent that Games Workshop is caring less and less for the gamer. I'm starting this thread to see what it would take some of you to finally say "That's it GW, I can't do this anymore with you." Some of you have been playing this game and other GW games for much longer than I and have some of the most elegantly painted armies I've ever seen. Is there a breaking point for you? I'm considering it myself. I'm selling my Orks which are my main love and I have a Company Battlebox still on sprues that now I'm seriously considering just selling. Why? I've kinda had it with this. Dark Heresy was a huge slap in the face to me and 5th edition just looks awful. Those are just my personal opinions though and I'd like to hear what Dakka has to say.

If you're going to quit, quit *AFTER* you play a few 5th Edition games.
For me, I probably won't ever "quit".
But stuff may go into storage for few years. And that's the real beauty of this stuff - once you've got it, you can play it for ages.
Heck, my BFG has sat in boxes for probably a good 4. But it's painted and playable at any time.
The other suggestion I might make is for you to diversify a bit, mix things up. If all you do is play GW games, and let GW determine whether you have fun, that's probably not healthy.

I hate you.
As it stands right now I dabble in a bunch of different games, all equally, including 40k. As long as I can kit bash I'll probably always love 40k. That's really what they have going for them, other than the ubiquity. 'Hordesmachine' has better rule support, 40k is all about how much plastic you can put together.

10 years...
My first WD was 107, and I've been a nerdy fan for coming on 19 years. I am also among the first to push back against the sturm & whine of the "entitled consumer"; I rarely fail to remember that GW is a company, not a partner, not a friend, not malicious, and not kind. It's just there. They have had a great product (which isn't their rules, but the hobby itself) for quite some time. Even in the midst of some great technological advances, their management of their lines has been haphazard at best. This is a luxury item, and part of the business is customer relations. Which middle management has worked on very hard while senior management continues to make poor decisions making that middle level effort even harder.
Major issues are:
Killing the bitz trade over the past few years (internally and now externally) has put a major damper on my spending. *I* want to pick the bits...not you. Because *I* know what I want to build.
Only supporting 2 armies in each range a year (for the most part) is a terrible decision to keep everyone interested (no one has 4 armies anymore, GW). Which means some of your hobbyists can go 5 or more years without a new PRODUCT to interest them. I consider that a terrible business decision. Which leads to my "break off" rule which I have lovingly crafted in the past few weeks.
And it's simple. If there isn't a new Space Wolf Codex and models (mostly the models) announced and released within 15 months of, like, right now, I'll probably bail. Just that.
EDIT: For clarification.

I have played 6 games in 2 years, so I dont play much. But I do have a large Kroot/TAU army and my LatD was over 6000 pts before they vanished (GW not lost/stolen).
So I have quit playing, but my spending has slowed down. I do buy from different mini makers now and because GW has gotted rid of their bitz I will buy my bitz from other companies also.
WD has become a joke and now I see no reason why they should even have a conversion section in it.

5th Edition. Not because of any of the rumors, but because it's coming. I'm too jaded to believe they will do any better this time than they did with 4th. I'm tired of Jervis & Gav lying to us about the 4th ed. FAQs.
Yes Jervis, I'm calling you a LIAR.
GW no longer has anything I need. And I'm finding it harder to want anything from them either.
I don't need anything else to play their game really. I have 3 large armies, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th edition of rules, why would I need 5th ed? Do I really need more badly written rules? No, not really.

know waht you mean X,
I've been considering switching to antoher system for anout a month now. GW just keeps kicking their loyal customers in the nuts. Prices, Dark Heresy, the new base kits, the fudged up mail order.
okay, what keeps me playing....
1. the fluff: I just like 40k. it's cool, it's dark it's evil, all that stuff. it's just fun. the universe is so big, there's so much stuff you can do, like...I dunno, play Armies who don't really have actual rules with other lists, like AM for example.
1.2. the above mentioned possibilites are great for any army. you don't have those possibilits with warmachine, since there are rarely leftover parts or something.
2. it was my first TT game. my brother got me into 40K to have something to play with 7 years ago. I don't play against him very often, since we normally don't have that much time on our hands and play WM instead.
3. Space Orks. they are just friggin cool. they were my first army and I just keep adding/improving stugg, because there's so much ideas I still have.
4. all my gaming buddies still play it. and I think it would take much time and effort to get them playing another system.
I probably could think of antoher thing or two.
so...what would it take me too quit? well I'm certainly not planning on dumping all my lovable orks, but I might change the system if I find something which suits my needs. a firend of mine is deep into battlefield evo and says it's very easy to get new rules for that.
but! as stupid as tha may sound: GW may be a vampiric buissness who keeps treating their fanbase like dirt...
....but I still like playing 40K.

Seriously? I know it's a serious jab to some hard core converters, but is that really the straw that broke your GW back?
Also, why do you hate me? If you would have asked Santa and been a good boy (and been a really good friend with the owner of your FLGS) you could have gotten one too.

That is a good question there X, probably one that a lot of people should spend some serious time thinking on.
In terms of what GW could do (I am assuming they can't impregnate my wife multiple times, get me fired, or kill all my gaming friends here) probably the only thing that would really make me quit is to completely remove Sisters of Battle from the game. As much as I love Marines and Orks, having my main, rather expensive army removed ala Squats would make me significantly less interested. Pretty much all my model purchases start with the exclamation "Oooh that would be cool in/allied with the girls!" Having to play them as counts as Marines would irk the hell out of me.
As it is though, if I could get a few guys to use HBMC's Revisited Rules, I would, and eschew GW's. I have been buying a lot of non-GW minis of late, just because I want to fill gaps or get neat models for things like Inquisitors etc. that GW just doesn't offer. So, while GW might not be able to get me to stop playing Warhammer 40k, they very well could get me to stop playing by their rules, using their minis.

heh.
yeah it just shows what their attitude is. Conversions are fun, and for some things you don't want to buy a whole box when you can get just what you want for say 66% of the price. I don't need a whole big pile of shields, for instance.
Fortunately I think eBay will always have bitz sellers.

WARNING...+++ FANBOI ALERT+++
Ok, im a huge fanboi indeed. I play because i love the backstory of the 40k universe. I have lost 10x as many games as i have won, becsue i build my armys for fluff and not powergaming. I realy am not botherd by what GW does as long as they support the hobby. Time moves on , Rules change things come and go and every time a whole group get thier undies in a wad over those changes. If it never changed the game would become stagnant and die off...
.. so will i ever quit? Probably not, becuse i know someting new is always around the corner as long as there is a GW , and to me thats exciting!

I'd drop them tomorrow, if my gaming group would, too... but they won't.
Every other member of my gaming group has been playing since Rogue Trader. before I joined the group, they played about a half dozen games and rotated each Saturday. They decided that they didn't get to use enough of the stuff they spent their $$ on, and consolidated down to a few games.
Rinse. Repeat.
They ended up exclusively playing 40K. It was the lone survivor of theirconsolidation and they're firmly entrenched.
I tried to get them to pick up the Warmachine rules and PROXY GW models, in hopes that they'd like it...
No dice.
So, I'm stuck with GW because the guys in my gaming group are my friends. I'd rather play GW with them than anything else without them.

Warmachine/Hordes
I like 40k, and I still have thousands of points of DA, Sisters, and Nids, but I've stopped playing entirely in favor of Warmachine and Hordes.
I know not everyone agrees, but I find the rules to be much more solid, the games run more quickly and smoothly, and for me it's simply more fun.
Fortunately, both GW and PP remain strong at the FLGS.

GW isn't the only TT game company you know. There are quite a few quality games out there that don't involve all of the extra BS that GW seems to specialize in. Quitting GW is not the same as quitting the hobby. I'm closing in on 14 years with this hobby and I'll continue with it for many more years. And nothing requires me to purchase another damn thing from GW to enjoy it.
GW could close their doors tomorrow and I wouldn't a single shed a tear over it.

Most of my buddies have quite playing WH40K after they got children, so I have in a way quit playing as well. Furthermore, I have been abroad a lot, so playing was more seldom anyway.
However, if I was to take up playing again, one of the first things I would do would be to order a huge amount of bitz to get started, and to get my armies up and running again. Only it seems to be impossible as of late... So GW isn't really doing an effort to get me to start pouring my money their way again.
