I'm a tabletop wargamer, not a 40K player. I have an army but it is only one of a number of armies in various periods ranging from ancient Egyptian up to SF.
As long as people are playing 40K I'll be there, but it's not the only thing I play. And if GW collapsed I would happily use my 40K figures for other SF games.

GW isn't the only TT game company you know. There are quite a few quality games out there that don't involve all of the extra BS that GW seems to specialize in. Quitting GW is not the same as quitting the hobby. I'm closing in on 14 years with this hobby and I'll continue with it for many more years. And nothing requires me to purchase another damn thing from GW to enjoy it.
GW could close their doors tomorrow and I wouldn't a single shed a tear over it.
Except that this thread is about specifically GW and 40k.

What would it take for me to quit? What did it take for me to quit? I'd been out of Warhammer for almost a year now. It's been at least three years since I've played a game - probably even longer than that if I actually think about it.
I'd been a GW customer since Rogue Trader was released in the states and had a White Dwarf collection for a significant portion of that time. When my daughter was born, my priorities changed and while Warhammer had slid to a low spot on the priority totem-pole prior to that, after her birth, it dropped off entirely. I'd already been in process of selling off my extraneous armies. By the time my daughter was born, I had one army left. I sold it, got rid of all my 40k Codices, all my WHFB Army Books, all my Imperial Armour books, all my Rulebooks (including my copy of Rogue Trader and WAAAGH!!! The Orks), all my bitz that I'd collected over the course of 26 years, even my paints! When you're getting a few hours of sleep a night because of a new baby and it's been months since you and your wife had an evening alone together, you can't really conceptualize that you might ever have time for gaming again.
But now, I'm facing seller's remorse. I miss playing. I miss building armies. I miss converting miniatures (always my favorite part of the hobby). So, I'm looking to get back in. Build a new army - get playing again. I started looking through my stuff a couple weeks ago and realized that this is the most miniature-free I've been since 1990. All I have left is a Skaven Bloodbowl Team and a copy of Jes Goodwin's The Gothic and the Eldritch. Most amusing, though, is how much 40k is like smoking or some other addiction - I've been looking around the house trying find if I left a hidden stash somewhere with some of the Ltd Ed miniatures I'd never planned to get rid of...
It's that Apocalypse! I'd never planned on getting back in. And when I heard about Apocalypse, I was skeptical - thinking it was just GW wanting gamers to buy tons of models and buy huge models that they'd never otherwise use. But when I looked over the rules, it looked like GW was really getting back into some creative gaming! Along with that, a Christmas present of the Sabbat Martyr Gaunt's Ghosts books have got me hankerin' to get back in.
I haven't bought any new minis yet - but my wife has seen me posting to the lists again and has already expressed her displeasure in me getting back into the game. And you know, I could just say her, I can do what I want. But you know, family means more to me than a game does. So unless I can find a way to balance gaming and family in a way that satisfies everyone involved (which I'm trying to do), I'm going to be staying quit.

WHFB right now. I still buy 40k stuff, but I won't play the game.

DbM - that is why storage boxes and such were invented.
I was in and out of Magic, but my Decks were always boxed and my cards in binders, so coming back was easy. And when I stopped, it was no big deal. Similarly, my wargames are nicely boxed and I can stop or start at any time.
Getting back in means you need to find a balance you can live with. In my case, before I got married, I played a lot. There was a time when I was single and could play multiple times weekly. If you have wife / kids / whatever, you just take a break. But one thing you can always do is build and paint, because that is on your schedule.
Negotiate an entertainment budget for buying stuff with no questions asked. Similarly, you agree to an hour or two per day that you do what you like with. Sure, multi-day GTs and all-day RTTs are a thing of the past. But you can't tell me that you can't buy a box of toy soldiers and work on them bit-by-bit, off-and-on in your spare time. If you want to do a little hobby stuff instead of watching TV, then that's not unreasonable.

If you had typed GW instead of TT, your point would have been more clear.
There are several posters who have quit GW and are still active on Dakka. While I might quit GW it does not mean I have to quit 40k also. It will probably be easier to play if you ignore GW.

You need to establish a pimp hand, dbm. If it's soemthing you want to do, you should find a way to make some time for it. I agree you have to make sacrifices - but not whole cloth. You agree to cut back on spending or time fiddling...not the whole thing.

I don't think I'll ever be able to quit. I've been playing for 10 years and I've got a bunch of different armies.
I've got almost every 40k art book, most of the BL books, and even a few Imperial Armor books. I'm a 40k fanboi but I'm not blind to the silly business practices GW does.

Pretty soon, if the bones thrown and deciphered come to pass, the question won't be " what would make you quit?", but rather " What will keep GW in buisness any longer then a year?"
Consider some of the far reaching decision making, bone 'ead plays, and general nafariousness that we have been seeing?
What makes anyone think that this isn't really just a inside outski way of hack and slash corperate BS where Kelly the duche, Jervis, the Oblivious Jester, and Gav the Noob are just playing in different rolls of the show, " How to efficiently bankrupt a company and cash in on some insider insurance for fun?"
These guys are doing some shady stuff, point blank. Are we supposed to believe that a worldwide group of gaming companies related to the " Games Workshop" name are truly this inefficient, stupid, and/or bankrupt? ALL OF THEM??? WTH?
Quitting won't be an issue when we start seeing " Forgeworld, LTD is on the auction block," because the main office can't pay the next quarterly earnings, and they are already down to some of thier lowest places on the market, ever.
Just my opinion, but they are in a hell of a fix, and I think they are alot worse off then they are letting on.
Good thing about it is that Gorkamorka, and Necromunda can't be screwed with as bad as 40K has been in almost a six month timeframe.
Skirmish games... the other white meat.

However, it is becoming quite apparent that Games Workshop is caring less and less for the gamer. I'm starting this thread to see what it would take some of you to finally say "That's it GW, I can't do this anymore with you." Some of you have been playing this game and other GW games for much longer than I and have some of the most elegantly painted armies I've ever seen. Is there a breaking point for you? I'm considering it myself. I'm selling my Orks which are my main love and I have a Company Battlebox still on sprues that now I'm seriously considering just selling. Why? I've kinda had it with this. Dark Heresy was a huge slap in the face to me and 5th edition just looks awful. Those are just my personal opinions though and I'd like to hear what Dakka has to say.
already have.
why? The new CSM codex is garbage, the GW "online community" (as represented by fine sites like Dakka) are just fanboi trash, the game has run it's course for me and I'm going to my first "Friday Night Magic" this week.

There is a strange duality between GW and 40k for me. On the one hand I love 40K but on the other I hate GW with burning hatred.
Ive been around since mid second edition and have weathered their gouge tactics over the last 15 years but recently I have been thinking about getting out of the game because I grow tired of GWs constant buggery.
See for the longest time it was 90% love for 40k and 10% hatred for GW, but over the last few years it seems like the love for 40K is teetering around 52%.
Anyway long story short, for GW to have a fan of 40k such as myself questioning quiting really shows me how much they have truely fallen.

Too be honest, I think I quit long ago. It just took me until recently to admit that my love was gone and dead. Basically in denial that GW would ever return, ever warm my bed again.
GW died to me and I never mourned it properly, and now I am selling nearly everything that I had of it.
GW had a good run and made some good games (SpaceHulk, BFG, gorkamorka, etc) but really when I sit down and think when was the last time I enjoyed their flagship game, 40K, was when Andy Chambers was still involved.
Cool articles such as the creature feature in WD were a blast. Beneficial for both GW and the consumer. it gave us a reason to buy cool bits to make creative things and make GW a profit.
Now, GW not only deny you any articles of worth in WD for such purposes, but took away any meaningful way of acquiring those bits.
Nothing that cool has since surfaced from this company and I don't believe it ever will again.
He jumped ship. For reasons we can only guess about.

I played 2 games of 40k in 2007, both with my black templar army.
Since 4th ed came out I just haven't been able to get back into 40k after the hopeless grind that the end of third ed had become.
I still love the fluff and will buy a 40k novel ahead of a WHFB novel in a heartbeat.
However for the last 4 years WHFB has been the bees knees and all my limited time and money has been going into that.
I guess the killer for me will be when work gets so busy I can't game anymore, but I'll just pack everything away and pull it out a couple of years later.

I hardly ever play 40K now, for year bfg has been the main game (due to it being the preferred choice of friends) but time does not allow anymore. I still collect but as for giving up, I'm not sure it would be possible :( I tend to move around game systems (wityhin GW, sad i know but it saves buying new models) and now have a colection of most of the major games in the last 10 years and many models double up between the systems. Liek many I really like the fluff and have found that on a saturday instead of playing i tend to find myself sat in a coffee shop reading some of the books. It could be becuase my gaming room is also at work and it's not easy spending 3/4 of the week there (including night time sleep! - don't ask)

NEVER EVER get rid of magic cards.
I learned my lesson with that, I had a majority of the sets (including alpha and beta) all the way up to stronghold and I sold it for half of what it was worth at the time, if I had kept it until now I would have been able to sell my black lotus' for ten times as much.

I quit buying any GW stuff new from them a couple of years back based on price/value and the lack thereof.
I still play various GW games (although 40k is way down the list because it is an outdated, cheese-infested, clunky POS and should have been euthanased in '99, but I will play it if someone else wants to in our group and its their turn to pick the game we play).
In otherwords I quit GW as a customer ages ago. I probably won't ever quit GW games altogether as a player, but I'm not bothered about remaining "current". I'm not interested in what's currently on the plate, but I still poke my head around the door to see if the same crap is still there.

I can't say as i will really "quit" the game.
Even if GW went out of business i still have all my models, dex's and my 4th edition rulebook. i think the only way i would quite playing is if i could not find anybody to play with.
That being said, one thing is for certain. i am not changing my armies or buying more models reguardless of the proposed 5th edition rules. it may put me at a disadvantage given the 5th edition rumors but i will make do.
Even so 40K is only 1 of 4 TT strategy games i play regularly.

I probably wouldn't ever quit, though I have thought of taking an extended break from the game. I play Death Guard and Orks, so up to recently I was very unhappy about the state of things, and my spending was waaaaaay down. Now though, I find 40K fun again, because I can compete with tough lists and still have the flexibilty to have play friendly games with whatever takes my fancy.
I really enjoy fantasy though, so I can't see myself ever quitting that barring some sort of complete fubar-ing of the rules.
That said, GW's upper management are idiotic scumbags, and I feel sorry for the staff at every other level of the organisation who take the flak for it.

So unless I can find a way to balance gaming and family in a way that satisfies everyone involved (which I'm trying to do), I'm going to be staying quit.
Just ask.
Remember... You should ALWAYS start that sentence with, "If you really loved me..."
Seriously, though... Just tell her you want to game. It's only fair that you be allowed to have your hobbies. Plus, it'll have the added bonus of keeping you sane.

I used to have the 6' Black Templar cutout in my room, I have the collector's edition Apocalypse backpack, I have the collector's edition Marine codex. I'm not trying to stroke myself here, I'm just trying to make the point that I love this game, the fluff, and everything else.

Not worth arguing... especially in this thread.
But, re: fanboi trash....
You're saying Dakka is fanboy trash?

I doubt even the buying or closing of GW will make me quit, as we'll all still have our armies and rulebooks, so we'll still be able to play. Plus if they shut down, there'll be clearance sales at places, so I'll be able to pick up models I've always wanted but couldn't justify buying.

I won't quit, but I won't be playing 5th edition. I'll continue on with 4th & home rules.
