Hey all,

I have been thinking about doing a IG army for quite some time and was thinking about doing something with Light Infantry and Cameoline as 2 of my doctrines, probably go for Iron Discipline for another and Close order drill cause it's free. Not sure what to use for the last one.

Anyway, I am relativelt new to guard, but I am not new to 40k, I have been playing off and on since Rogue trader. Any advice would be helpful and much appreciated, especially from HBMC and other veteran guard players out there...

It'll work very well in 5th edition.

It doesn't work so hot in 4th.

If you'd like to know more, be glad to fill ya in.

Lots of infantry sitting in cover. You could even do it with no tanks so that your opponent has to spend the whole game killing 6 point Guardsmen (well... 8 points with Cam and LI) with Lascannons.

Your main concerns if you do it this way are:

1. How do I deal with Assaulters?
2. What Counter-Assault Units do I take?

The first one leads into the second one, but with the second one remember that with that type of army your Fast Attack choices become quite important.

A couple of things...Line squads should they be las/plas squads or something else?

Tanks...should I include them? Or Basilisk??

HBMC, should I run with Rough Riders as my Fast attack choice, or should I go for something like Hellhounds??

I am thinking along the following...

Doctrines: Light Infantry, Cameleoline, Iron Discipline, Veterans, Rough Riders (maybe?)
JO with ID, Standard

3xVeteran squads with a couple of squads with Plasma and 1 or so with meltas

2 or 3 Infantry platoons, again JO's with ID and whatever for heavy/special weapons

1 or 2 rough riders

and either some tanks or none...

How does this look as far as a base to work from...Should I flesh the list out more?

PS: I am shooting for 1500pts, but what would the list look like in 500pt increments, this might help keep me motivated to finish building and painting the army. Example, at 500 points I should buy this stuff, the next 500pts, I should buy these units and for the final 500pts, this would finish rounding out the army...Thanks

Las yes, plas no.
Leman Russes and Hellhounds are excellent tanks.
For best effect on your vets and command squads, run them like this:

Vets get the plasma.
Command squads get the meltaguns, drop troops, and sharpshooters.

I don't believe in RR if you have 4-5 plasma/melta squads. They will rip the heart out of assault units headed your way, and even when you cannot deep strike or infiltrate you'll find they still make excellent counter punch units.

Why the heck not? I've always gotten good use out of las/plas line squads and suicide melta command squads.

I also recall someone saying that in 1500pts, you should have no fewer than 60 guardsmen...True?

remember there are some units that connot take all the doctrines. RR can only take where noted in the doctrine. Personally giving your guard a lot of wargear I have found over time is just a waste of points cause the guys are going to die anyways. I would focus on trying to keep them as cheap as possible.
