Um there are only 64 auctions up for warhammer 40k and 11 for warhammer fantasy. So perhaps you would like to explain how this is better then Ebay in any way? You wouldn't happen to be affiliated with this site would you?

It's an interesting idea. Ebay does seem to be crowding out the mid size seller though, not the real hobby sellers like the sit implies.

A guy looking to unload a couple of auctions a week will probably use eBay or B-town, just to get the most eyeballs. I mean, more avenues for buying stuff is a good thing, but there isn't a lot of stuff up, or a lot of bidders yet.

Buyers want the broadest possible selection, and sellers want the most item views and potential buyers as possible. As much a hassle as eBay is, it's the best place for both buying and selling.

WargamesMarket.com has been around for a while now and it still doesn't seem to be making much headway, in terms of getting more listings on there...

I'd be more interested if they were a bit more focused on auctions instead of just-under-retail Buy It Nows, cut down the auction times to a reasonable listing period (is 6 months for an auction listing really necessary...?) and added some way to filter out items from sellers who don't ship internationally.

They're nailing jelly to a tree, though. eBay would have to go much, much further downhill before the any sizable chunk of the market will really think about jumping ship.

No im not affiliated with them in anyway.

what is wrong with you people? is anything that challenges ebay just automatically wrong?

Why is anytime anyone suggests something as a replacement ( the adepticon faq not withstanding ) the people here on dakka go out of there way to denounce anything. Do you ever wonder why the majority of websites out there ignore anything that goes on here because of curmudgeons like you ?

I found a site that i think has potential i expressed it as an opinion. Personally i cant stand Ebay and their linked at the hip Paypal. To me they are Organised thieves and if people would just stop using them then maybe we could all make a difference.

I see im wasting my time.

And as far as bartertown goes..last time i checked bartertown doesnt have auctions. so your mentioning of them is way out in left field

Of course it's not automatically wrong. He merely asked why you think this site is better. Seems a fair enough question to me.

That really depends entirely on the quality of the replacement.

Dakkites in general are all for alternate hobby resources... when those alternatives are actually better than what they already have.

How is a site that has only a few of dozen 40k items for sale in any way better than eBay?

Listings with a starting price equal to their "Buy it Now" price aren't really auctions either, pretty much making Wargamesmarket.com just a webstore with crappy selection.

People post lists of thier items and the minmum they will accept for it, and people offer them cash or trade.

Does it not qualify becuase there is no listing fee, or becuase you just want to dismiss my point ?

Earlier today I listed, and sold $170.00 worth of items, without a listing or selling fee, and I'm in the process of trading some unused models for models I'm more likely to use. Seems like a good deal to me.

thats great for you but thats a limited occasion.

bartertown is about trading not selling the powers that run bartertown have a nasty habit of making people buy advertising they deem are running businesses. Wether they are or not

the only point of my post which alot of you have blown off was the fact i found it to be a decent alternative to the scum bags at ebay and their thieving cousin paypal.

you have asuccess at bartertown im happy for you.
I think this site has potential, will i be proven right? Who knows.

Not to mention the fact that they only list wargaming items there not the kitchen sink

I don't agree with this. I've been selling stuff there for years with no issues. I don't offer stuff all the time, but I've never had any interference with my posts.

They make people who offer a service, instead of goods, buy advertising.

They make buissiness' buy advertising.

I've been selling, buying, and trading there since 2003, with over a 100 transactions, all without being asked to buy advertising. I think it is you who has limited exposure to Bartertown and not I.

If you don't like it that's fine, but there is definitely more traders on Bartertown offering items on any given day than on the auction site you brought up.

ok uhm he wasnt offering a service he was asked to paint some figures for a deal not related to a trade.

i never said there were more auctions than people trading on bartertown i said i found it to be an attractive alternative to ebay.

bartertown no matter how you like to think about it is not an auction site pure and simple

if enough people started using the alternative thigns might imporve im simply putting it out there for people to see the alternatives

before ebay i used yahoo auctions i miss that it was easier and better in my opinion

Ebay and its thieving cousin paypal need to be shut down or forcibly split apart

will this other site turn into more? maybe? dont know

if the close minded people on dakka are any indication no

Dude, with you as their self appointed spokesman they are sure to fail.

YOU alledged it was an attractive alternative to Ebay.

Aside from it not being Ebaym what makes it an attractive alternative ?

Is the selection better ? No
Is it as reputable ? Who knows

Also, I've never said Bartertown was an Auction site, I said it was attractive alternative to Ebay for miniatures.

Rle68,

So WHY, exactly is this site s much better than ebay? What quantifiable differances are there that make it so? I'm not seeing it.

And WHY did you come to Dakka in the first place if it is full of curmudgeons and you (evidently) don't like those? What did you expect when you got here? Love? Mass, blind acceptance of your "op"? Why make yourself a part of a community populated by people you evidently don't like (curmudgeons. you're right, I'm just saying it now b/c it is my new word for the day!)?

You ask us what our problem is. I think that the problem is you, youngster. Back to the kiddie pool with you, leave the deep water to the big fish. Go explode elsewhere, unless you value being prodded for entertainment value-related antics.

From what I understand, Wargamesmarket is attractive to sellers as they don't quite bend you over the rails the way Ebay does. I know they're trying to drum up more traffic over there. It's a nice idea--more specific than ebay, more consistent than bartertown--but it has yet, as Lorek the mod said, gain traction. I check it out every now and again to see if something tickles my fancy. For a while it was a great place to get some fantasy (not GW) stuff.

Disclaimer: not affiliated with Wargamesmarket in any way. Just another gamer following it on the TMP.

I agree with rle (to a point) and syr...
Now, before you jump on me, hear me out.
I'm 36 years old. There's no room IN the kiddie pool for my fat @55 anymore. LOL
I've been on Bartertown for a long time, and ebay even longer (same screen name on both).
Bartertown is my #1 source for getting rid of my stuff. I don't often get as much as I'd get on ebay, but I get it in half the time. Bartertown and its' advertising commercial members are my #1 source for acquiring new stuff.

NO auction site will EVER beat out BTown for my "first shot" at making deals.

I do think that WGM *IS* an attractive alternative to ebay.

Note the wording of the sentence, though. It makes no comparison based on size. It doesn't say it's BETTER than eBay... just an attractive alternative.
Why? That's easy.
WGM is all about making a better place for gamers to sell their shi... umm... stuff. Ebay is all about making a better place for eBay and PayPal to butt-rape us for more fees.

Honestly, though I totally disagree with rle's methodology... with his approach at to the conversation... I find the following quote to be dead-accurate:
"...Ebay and its thieving cousin paypal..."

They're a horrendous coupling whose joining has made things far more difficult for the auction community than anticipated by most. Instead of maintaining 2 separate entities, they're inextricably linked now and we are *ALMOST* forced to use payPal, and use it under THEIR strict limitations, rather than how WE want.

So, yeah... Wargames Market is an attractive alternative to, both, sellers AND buyers. They're "BY the gamers, OF the gamers and FOR the gamers..." They don't want to get rich off of us. They want to break even and, maybe, make some profit off of us... but it seems to me that their priority is to save us from FeeBay.

Just my opinion.

Ebay orignially had no affiliation with PayPal.
PayPal sprung up and made a mint due to it's symbiotic relationship with Ebay.
Ebay wanted a slice of the pie and created BidPay.
BidPay was a PayPal clone, that was basically a nuisance to anyone already using PayPal, as it was practially the same service and it was annoying having to have accounts with both.
Ebay figured out it was more profitable to just scrap BidPay and buy PayPal outright.
PayPal and Ebay, now with no serious competition, does like every other company with no competition raises their prices and becomes so huge that customer service becomes nonexistant.

I personally don't bare Ebay or Paypal any ill will, but I did go from listing 10 auctions a week to about 10 auctions a year, because I felt the slice of my action they were taking was getting to large.

I do have to admit that Ebay's feedback system has some hillarious limitations.
A Seller can have UNLIMITED negative feedbacks with NO consequence.
Some of them have hundreds of negative feedback, which isn't apparent if they have more postive than negative.
A buyer on the other hand can only ever have 2 negativ efeedback and thier account is closed if they get a third, over the ENTIRE life of the account.
My first account with Ebay, which I had for years with a 700+ rating was closed by Ebay after I recieved my 3rd retalitory* negative feedback.
* Shady dealers won't leave you any feedback after you've payed for an item, so they have the oppurtunity to slander you if you leave them a negative feedback.

The more I rehash old memories, the more and more aI remember why I just sell my stuff on Bartertown and don't use Ebay anymore

I've noticed that too. I never leave feedback for sellers that don't post their feedback first. As a seller I leave feedback when I dispatch the item (at the latest) The buyer's done their bit by that point i.e. given me their money.

Well you are saying it is a replacement when it has almost nothing anyone is going to want to buy and with less then 100 auctions for warhammer who is going to list on it!!!!!! I really dislike ebay and how it treats sellers (not to mention the outrageous fees) but to then offer up a replacement that only has 75 auctions in total for warhammer items is ridiculous.
