What about including an ignore function? On every board there are people that just never seem to have anything worthwhile to say. An ignore function can help stop someones 'tard-ness from starting a flame war.

Not to mention that it saves me the time of having to scroll past their worthless posts.

Warseer has an Ignore function. I enjoyed it when I posted there since, after a while, it got to the point where seeing that certain posters had replied to threads I was participating literally made my chest hurt in anticipation.

However, I think that Dakka is a higher quality board than Warseer and partly that's because there has been no Ignore function so that people have to deal with each other like adults, rather than like children who don't listen to anything they don't want to hear. I think an Ignore function stifles mature discussion because people aren't forced to confront opinions and styles that they find disagreeable.

I mean, these forums are presumably for discussion, not simply an echo-chamber for our own egos. Let's keep it like that.

I like to do it the non technological way. If someone is boring or insulting me (hard enough to do) I just ignore them the same way I ignore a light drizzle.
Still, more functions for people that want them is good I suppose...

I see your point Nurglitch, it is a valid and mature way of looking at the whole 'open forum' scene.

However, when there is a Donkey Cave insisting that the 'Rules' that he has written into his rulebook are now valid, 'cause they are in the rulebook'......THAT is truly worth ignoring.

Yes, and that can be better handled by people conducting an intelligent discussion in the same thread, a kind of Goofus and Gallant sort of thing. Stupidity thrives where patient men and women do nothing.

This forum is both a community and an entertainment medium. People come here for different reasons.

Many of us come here every day, and many people don't want to waste time reading certain people's posts. If for no other reason that it's possible they've already heard it all before.

I hate to say it, but you'd be surprised how many people come here just to waste time or get distracted.

Why would I be surprised? I come here to waste time and distract myself from work. It's a discussion forum.
