Just trying to figure out what sort of list to put together to go with the new codex. I've played KOS pretty much religiously since the release of the Armageddon book and had some limited wins in the years to follow, more or less because of our out dated rules.

With the new release I shifted to a foot slogging army and have had some good success, more wins than losses. This has led me to the point where I need to make my final decision on what to go with for the coming tourneys this year. I haven't played KOS, or more truck based lists since the new codex, so I thought I would ask some of you who have, or who might have played against one for some info.

Can a maxed out truck list compete against other lists in a typical GT? I think the main problem is going to be the Mech lists, but I haven't played them with the new Truck ramshackle rules. My thoughts were 6 maxed out trucks with Nob and Klaw with a ram to give Tank shock abilites. I'm also thinking of two or three nob squads with Docs and a couple of klaws each to go with a WB on bike.

My concern is that, like with past battles against heavy shooty lists, if I lose 1st turn I'm left with flaming heaps and small squads to tromp across the board and get shot to bits with. Is a unit of 30 boys going to be a more resiliant unit by the time it get's to the enemy compared to a smaller unit in a truck boosting it 24 inches across the table?

I'd love any thoughts as well as what some of you have experienced thus far with similar lists, wether playing with, or against.

Please keep in mind, I just want a list with a chance to win. I'm not one of the guys who has the "Gotta take what'll win!" armies, but all the same it'd be fun to have a list competitive against tournament lists around today.

Thanks!

The answer lies partly with how much terrain will help you. If you can bloclk LOS to the majority of your trukks in the case of not getting first turn, then that list will probably do fine.

Personally I think a more hybrid list will do better. A firebase composed of lootas, KFF BM, 30 strong unit of shootas with a few trukks and stormboyz with biker boss doesn't totally rely on getting first turn and there's less stuff to hide on turn 1.

When I played with them I found only one game where the lack of terrain gimped me, mostly because a big assed river was counted towards the 25% coverage.
That game was a turkey shoot for my opponent. but most of the time it's not impossible to hide all your trukks behind stuff.

I suppose you could take 3 cheap battlewagons and use them to block LOS to your trukks.

I'm beginning to lean towards mass stormboyz, snikrot and boyz in battlewagons as a decent choice. KFF mek is especially useful here. Will be great in 5e.

Since you were specific in mentioning it as a GT army, I would say that it may be your best bet if you are going for an 'overall'. About 70 less models to paint than a slogging horde means that unless you have massive amounts of time on your hands, the KOS is gonna look better than any 175 model army. There are always carrying and displaying concerns with massive armies too. And how long your games are going to be.

If you are shooting for best general, take the max stormboys shoota boys with loota support. If you are shooting for having a good time, and getting to sit down occasionally and go to lunch early, I think the KOS is the smart money.

Also, i disagree that a mixture of the two would be wise. While a slogger/kos mix may be better than a pure KOS list competitively, it is not better than a pure slogger list for getting massacres, and your army theme score will be very low (barring any really creative conversions)

If I were you I'd trust in the terrain, take a themed KOS army, and have fun. If I was a terrible painter or just wanted that best general trophy, I'd run a KFF mek/biker boss/90 shootas/24 lootas/20 stormboy monstrosity, paint it black with checks, try to explain away the un-themed biker boss, take the comp hit and pwn people.

I don't think there's really a question as to what is more "competitive", a slogger horde just has too many advantages over the Trukk based army especially in resiliency against a wider range of enemy army types.

But with some skill and a little luck a KOS army should do absolutely fine in a tournament setting. You probably won't win all 5 games but if you command your army well you should definitely be able to win 3-4 games.

I would personally just make sure to max out on Rokkit buggies as your FA choices to give you some AT fire and I'd even consider taking a unit of Lootas and a big mek w/ SAG to sit in the backfield and give you a few shooting options.

I dunno, I've done better with KOS. Maybe I'm not playing Horde right, or they get better above 1500.
