I've had some requests to see what my club is currently up to, now that we're done with the female guard project.
Imperial Cavalry units are one of the best and cheapest (points-wise) counter-assault units available, but no decent models exist for them, so we're going to make them ourselves for our club members.
We started with our concept art:
This creature is based on the Moa, an extinct eleven feet tall creature native to New Zealand.
The Moa is very similar to a Veloci-Raptor, both in silouette, speed, ferocity, and intelligence, but it is unusual in that is has no arms/wings, not even little ones. Moa were very strong, able to break through a man's skull or snap a man in half with their lightning fast beaks as effortlessly as popping a balloon. The Moa has been the inspiration for other Sci-Fi creatures you might be familiar with in movies like Wizards, Naausica, Final Fantasy, and some Star Wars critters.
The rider will carry a shocklance, which would be an equivalent weapon that would use the same rules as a hunting lance.
Here's our Work In Progress shots so far. It is fun to see the progression from armature to full model. The sculpting is about 50% done at this point, so look here for more updates as sculpting progresses.
More updates to come.

That is some amazing work. Very admirable project. Are you planning to create ones with different gear and poses for variety?
|
Moz:
You: "Hold on, you rammed, that's not a tank shock"
Me: "Ok so what is a ram, lets look at the rules."
Rulebook: "A ram is a special kind of tank shock"
You: "So it's a tank shock until it hits a vehicle, and then it's a ram, not a tank shock, and then it goes back to being a tank shock later!"
Me: "Yeah it doesn't really say any of that in here, how about we just play by what's written in here?" |

Honestly though, it looks really cool and it's very interesting to see the step by step process.

Yes, very cool! With the flap style armor over the flank leg joints, is it possible to cast the body in one part with ball sockets for the legs? You could cast different legs from standing or leaning forward to trotting to flat out charging. You could add different head and neck casts to the same effect.
It's an amazing project. I've been wanting to do guard cavalry for years. You guys hit a good balance with the style of the xenos mount and the wargear and the imperial fluff.

If more of us valued food and cheer and 40K over hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. |

In the final package there will be two different kinds of legs, one walking and one running, and the neck will be attached to the body with a ball-and-socket joint for different poses after assembly.

ROFL, love it Nurglitch. Was thinking of posting the exact same thing.
Also, having been to NZ and seeing the skeleton of a Moa and a life sized model of one at one of their museums, I must say that some one riding on of those things with armour and a shock lance would be pretty terrorizing to me. I'd be like: ... Oh , RUN!

Remember those guard they have in that White Dwarf that are converted from Bretonnian Men-at-Arms? The flat helmet green guys? I just got an idea that you could convert some dudes like that to ride these bad boys and you could get a kick ass Final Fantasy "counts as" army for your guard. Maybe kit-bash a Vulture to look like those "jet things" from FFXII. You could easily do a Sentinal conversion... hmm... Or am I just high?
