I love star trek, and before you bash/flame me for my passion, know that that isnt the point here.

Most Importantly, what codex? I could paint space marines with trek-equivalant paint jobs. (space marine commander with power armour painted like Worf's uniform complete with head)

Rhino's can look vaguely like the old shuttlecraft from the original series but I've been trying to figure a way to do this.

Inquisitor and retinue----> Kirk and his away team? Devestator or Anti tank squad with Lascannons----crews for phaser cannons from "the Menagerie"

Models to use? Themed powers? Known Characters from episodes in 40k roles?

Thoughts? If the Ideas are good I might actually do this.

Oh my gosh! Star Treck meets 40K.

The only suggestion I can make and I know it´s in the oposite line of thought it´s to use Eldar, as a friend told me once "from all the 40K races, eldar are the pure SF guys"

That and to use a lot of red on your army, Red shirts have a reputation to hold.

Smith Jamison: We aren't here, which means when we open up on you and shred your bodies with automatic fire then this will never have happened.

hmm, we don't see too many 'armies' in Star Trek, more common are 'naval'-style battles between spaceships, so arguably BattleFleet Gothic is the answer - but I'm guessing you'd actually like to play 40K!

redshirt cannonfodder jokes aside, the most fluffy army would be a Klingon force, and it would certainly look cool. Which army list to use? Highly trained vicious warriors, deploying via 'transporter' beams, so I'm thinking a Dark Angels DoubleWing or pure DeathWing army, deepstriking into combat

Do you need it to be GW models?

www.victoryforce.com has a great 'space farer' line that screams Star Trek.

I would use them and Eldar rules, falcons as shuttles, dir avengers as space suited Star Fleet Marines, fire dragons as normal red shirts (phasers are a lot like melta guns IMHO, they can vaporize steel after all), Vulcan science officer farseer, Starfleet captain autarch. This would really look like the crew of the Enterprise took the field.

It might also be doable with GW bitz but the effort would drive me mad, MAD I SAY MAD!

***
Next up is the ST-inspired army. That's more like your original idea with marines wearing SF insignia. Have lots of phaser-carrying assault marines (who teleport in of course) and shuttle-like land speeders and you're in good shape.

Add in how they were inspired by ancient vid-tapes found drifting in space and you have a cool GW army.

The Sons of Kirk?
***
Finally is the ST-parody army. Orks are best for this, red-shirt grots, trucks with warp nacells, squigs in short skirts, and a gold-shirted warboss with an obvious hair squig.

Heck I'd play any of them.

If I could, I would nominate this thread for "Dorkiest Topic Ever!" I'm not sure how much more nerd you can pack into 40k besides this, except maybe doing a Stargate themed army.... which actually sounds sort of interesting.... no insults intended, I appauld your initiative and creativity.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

d00d, in for a penny, in for a pound. It's not like our rigorous painted codex ultramarines armies are less nerdy. Heck since 9 out of 10 Americans know who captain kirk is it's a bit less nerdy.

damn I'm going to make a Stargate army now.

if we're doing a poll, Star Trek anything, other than actual Star Trek is just about the nerdiest thing you can possibly do. Stargate anything, including actual Stargate is just cool.

yeah, I forgot them, a Borg army would be really fluffy (sort of a mechanical version of genestealer cult, I suppose), and fairly easy to model, and you'd have quite a choice for which army it would 'count as' - necrons would be cool, but so would several other codexes

It's funny you mention this, because I'm looking to do a trek-esque (Original Series) force for Fantastic Worlds.

Star Trek does not show armies, as has been pointed out. Rather, it's a pulpy sci-fi exploration team (dashing leader, scientist, doctor, engineer, wacky crew, cast of extras).

If you want the feel of that, you're better off using Tau (or Human Aux for tau). They're the ones most likely to have an exploration-type agenda (well, without cybernetically modified human cannon fodder).

If you just want pulpy camp in red, gold and blue shirts, go orks (especially grots).

If you want the trek look but don't care about the feel, Cadians are incredibly versatile. Give 'em red shirts, black pants, and bare heads, and bob's your uncle.

If you want to really geek it up, I'm sure you can find TO&E on Starfleet Marine armies. For more ideas go here

As to what rules on a broader scale, I think you'd be happier gaming this as a kill team type scenario, rather than 1500 points of mooks with a hero. That would allow your intrepid heroes (the kill team) to fight off all the borg/klingons/wacky 4-armed white gorillas/primitive earthmen from a crashed spaceship that you could desire. Either that or consider something from Rattrap, like Fantastic Worlds, or other skirmish rules.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

I'd stick with Cadian figs mod'ed up with more tech gizmos and several original conversions (such as anti-grav heavy weapon platforms) and then use Tau rules to represent the weapons and unit organization.

This assumes a human-centric force. I'm using converted beastmen and human auxiliaries in my Tau army. Just use "counts as" for FCW.

Using the Tau list would let you use skimmer rules and the stronger weaponry the Trek canon has over the nornal 40K humans.

I love 40K way more then I love Star Trek, but I'm not going to delude myself for a second and pretend that 40K isn't ten times nerdier then Star Trek will ever be. Maybe a hundred times nerdier.

Man, that's the joy of Anime! To revel in the complete and utter wastefullness of making an unstoppable nuclear-powered combat andriod in the shape of a cute little girl, who has the ability to fall in love and wears an enormous bow in her hair.

How do you live with yourself after making such a blatant lie? Sure there is a bit of a nerdy element to Warhammer, but it is also made of win and God(Emperor). Star Trek has practically set the bar for nerdiness that others must follow.

Just remember that your army can't have heavy weapons unless they're Klingons, and then only mortars, if it's Next Generation or later. Original Trek Federation armies have rapid fire machine gun-esque phasers and Heavy Phasers connected to starships for power. Don't believe me, check out http://www.stardestroyer.net/Empire/Tech/Ground/index.html

That said, I'd do an Original Series based Imperial Guard army with Heavy Bolters, Lascannons, and Mortars as the only non-lasgun/laspistol(Phaser rifles/hand phasers) weapons. Model any tanks to be low-flying combat Shuttles. That site's a good resource for that, as he includes images for them.

There's an episode of DS9 where Cisco's kid gets trapped on a Federation planet under attack by the Klingons. It shows some of the Federation "Army" troops and I think Cadians would work fairly well if you painted them the same color.

I played a guy at a recent tournament who had a whole army themed on Starship Troopers. He played space marine rules which makes plenty of sense, and used cadian models for the main troops and also had scratch built landing craft that worked as drop pods. Just bolters, flamers, and missle launchers I think.

It was pretty cool; he even had the names of the charachters from the movie including the female ones.

all that said, I'm not sure what rules you would use for ST. Maybe guard, as thouse wimpy humans did not have anything in the way of armor.
