This is really becoming a pain for me. Can anyone explain a way to paint white armor without it looking "chunky" or crusty, please?

I've usually done it by starting with a black undercoat, then using various grays to build up to white. In the past I think I used Chaos Black, Codex Grey, Fortress Grey, Skull White.

When I painted a squad of Sisters years ago, I think I used the Chaos Black, Hideous Blue, Space Wolf Grey, Skull White.

Each was done mostly by dry-brushing.

Hope this helps!

What kind of a white are you looking for?

The Space Wolf Grey paint can be highlighted up to white.

And the bleached bone paint can be highlighted up to white.

I think Deathwing armies tend to be bleached bone
highlighted up whereas Apothecaries and Eldar tend to have
the gray/bluish kind.

(shout out to art peoples: Is that the difference between
cool and warm colors?)

"White" is really a pale (grey) color that highlights to pure white.

So I'd prime black, spray white, shade blue-grey, wash grey, blackline, highlight white, gloss highlight.

I prime white (getting a light grey) then paint white (leaving the grey in the cracks). Gets me as white as fresh=driven snow. :p

hey
when I did white on my high elf archers robes and wanted them really white I used the following

Prime model skull white (simple)
Gave the model a "wash" of space wolves grey
cleaned up with astronomicon grey
painted 2 THIN coats of white over top, leaving plenty of time between coats to dry
it looks like hard, creamic white, with a nice cool grey in the crevases

In response to your signature...the two missing primarchs are Chuck Norris and Mr. T

Vin Diesel is Bad@$$, but does not have enough personality.
Sorry to stray off topic like that....but I feel that his question has been answered sufficiently

Sorry, but Vin Diesel was first.

As for the techniques... a few of them wash with brown,
grey, or blue. I've had success with brown mostly, but
I think that's because brown is easy to forgive.

Vin diesel might be first on the interwebs, but Mr. T. is first where it actually counts

you can also primer white, use a thinned down black ink (20 parts water to one part ink) taking care to make sure this only goes into the recesses. rebase the model with a blue/grey mix mixed so that it's just about as dark as the inked model. add a pure white to this mix and gradually paint up until you have a pure white mixture.

I did it two ways. Both started with a black primer.

1) Terminators: Use Codex Grey Foundation paint to make the whole thing grey, then add thin layers of white, each one a little smaller to give weight and depth.

2) Celestians: Astronomicon Grey, blue ink. Add a few layers of white to give blue shading.
