If you don't know, it's becoming popular for platoon command squads to be used as suicide units; loaded up with 4 plasma guns and deep striking. But when I went to design an army list with this tactic you see...

(p.39) Any Guardsmen not acting as a heavy weapon crew may be armed with one of the special weapons from the following list:...Plasma gun at +# pts;

So the imperial guard owns plasma guns but...

(p.39) Any guardsmen... may be upgraded to a veteran at +# pts, and will have access to the Imperial Guard Armory.

Check the armory(p.34) and... Woah! no plasma guns.
So RAW would seem that a 4 plasma gun retinue would be illegal even though there is a consistent points cost for plasma guns in the codex for all the units with access to them. The IG FAQ doesn't address this and I can't find anything that would make this legal.

What do you think?

p.39 Any Guardsman not using special weapons, a vox-caster or forming a heavy weapon crew may be upgraded to a Veteran at +6 pts, and will have access to the Imperial Guard Armoury.

Only Guardsmen that aren't already wielding special weapons or heavy weapons can be made into Veterans.

So, it is illegal to have 4 Veterans with Plasmaguns dropping with the Officer, but perfectly legal to have 4 standard Guardsmen with Plasmaguns dropping with the Officer.

I don't understand your post. Why is it illegal?

Fishmonk: Plasma is also excellent for killing vehicles by dropping the unit behind them and lighting up their rear armor. It also is good for killing Necrons, Sisters of Battle, and any number of other Power Armor armies, which make up what, 70% of the armies played?
Grenade launchers are quite limited by comparison, and though I wouldn't mind a flamer in a drop unit, it would not be in one I intended to go tank hunting with.
