Hey all,

i laid back on 40k for a year or so, and i recently went to the local war store and had a nice look @ the new orks, ive decided to have a go on them but ive been reading on the internet and having trouble finding a nice dark Ork skin for my Goff army.

If anyone has some suggestions/techniques it would help a lot

Cheers,
Gutteridge

My regular Boyz are done with a Snot Green base, brushed with Goblin Green, which comes out fairly bright. For my Nobs and Bosses, though, I start with Dark Angels Green, brush with Snot Green, and add just a slight highlight with Goblin Green over the top.

Winds up looking something like this: (The big guys, that is... the Grots and the Mek/Doc are done as I do the Boyz)

For another style, if you're interested, I've been going with:

Basecoat: Knarloc Green
Wash: Green + Purple ink
Highlight: Camo Green
2nd Highlight: Rotting Flesh

Rank and file end up looking like:

While characters look like my avatar.

It's a little grittier than the snot/goblin green route, I think.

yeah, i can see what your doing and the dull colour goes well with the Goff armour scheme. I'll take it into consideration.

I was never a fan of greenskins, so I painted my first (and
only) squad of orks using browns.

I felt like it looked more beastly.

The guy at the the GW store near me, he now manages the Franklin Mills store, did some orks in dark angels green and catachan green, they looked pretty good, and they were fairly dark.

I follow this pattern:

Black undercoat- Dark Angels Green- Snot Green- Goblin Green

It's simple (I don't even drybrush) and while it won't win any golden demons, it looks good on the table.

See, I think going too dark is actually a bad thing with ork skin. My first pass at orks, I went with a much darker look, but it didn't pop. Going with a slightly brighter shade as the top layer makes all the difference.

For example;

Here's my warboss - old skin (dark) style:

And here he is reskinned to the new style:

The new style seems to show the depth of the model more, because the foreground colours are brighter.

In the end, do what makes you happy. I just know that the darker style I had used before didn't work for me, and the new, brighter look does. But, I don't think I'd go brighter if that meant using goblin green, cause I don't want my orks to look radioactive.

I've played orks for ten years now and have come up with a good dark color:

black base coat
white drybrush
goblin green the white drybrush areas
dark green ink
highlight goblin green

looks good and dark

I basecoat knarloc green, then hit it with 1:1:2 green ink, pva, water then drybrush snot green

looks pretty good. if you take out the pva and just go 1:1 with water you get an oily look which also looks really good

I actually prefer my Greenskins to be fairly vivid, to contrast with their dark clothes, but to each their own!

I did a bunch of Orks a few years ago, with a sorta odd process. I basecoated them something dark, drybryshed something lighter, then highlighted with rotting flesh. Then washed the whole thing with a dark greeen. Can't recall the colors, but the point is that you can inkwash over a light, non-green, and get green.

This time around I've followed the guide that was in WD a while back.

Orkhide shade base (predictably), Knarloc green over that, Goblin green over that, finishing with 50/50 Goblin Green and Bleached Bone.

I like the effect. It'll seem like it's going too bright as you do it, but the final effect is good.

One thing I've found is that extreme color gradients often work better than you'd think, but it takes patience ot see the whole model through before it will look right. So have faith on your test model.

I use dark angels green on top of a black primer, then I dry brush goblin green. If i want some detail i add an extreme highlight of equal parts dead flesh and goblin green.

I used a basecoat of Snot Green, highlighted with Goblin Green and then given a wash of Thrakka Green. It gives a nice darker effect shown here

I do: GW Orkhide Shade > VGC Sick Green > GW Thrakka Green wash > highlight VGC Sick Green > extreme highlight VGC Goblin Green > GW Thrakka Green wash.

Results look like this (pics were taken while WIP, so it's a bit brighter and glossier than in person):
