i used a grey car primer...but it was once a red khorne rhino... i had to strip it heavily and some stuff still hold on tight... so it will be a heavy weathered rhino soon... out of sheer need for covering up with the stuff i couldn´t get rid off^^

snakebite leater sounds also like a good base...

if one would use just a thin coat of yellow over a black basecoat you get an alomost neon color effect... if you ever want to go for that... try it^^

Do you get that effect when you paint hazard stripes using black and yellow? I'm assuming that you paint the yellow on over the black at some point but perhaps you work the opposite way?

No update tonight. I finished the Castellan (Catachan) green touch ups on one of the three Vendettas. Two more to go. I am learning that I was a bit too free with some of my earlier washes and now have to touch up my excesses.

He is glowing! I'm not sure how to use that effect on my army. Perhaps on a power weapon or fist?

that could work... my original plan was to one future day make eldars or DE in that scheme... that would be fitting in my view...

power weapons , lightning bolts with a bright white core...

I am still stuck in triple Vendetta land.

They are mostly complete, including basic weathering and decals the "Winterdyne Way". I still want to play with my Vallejo pigments and Tamiya weathering sets so I will have to figure out how to use them without messing up my birds.

Sigh, and someday I am gonna fix the canopies on the Vendettas I bought from Lycaeus Wrex.. They don't sit flush and therefore look odd. He also didn't put in the A-Yoke bit in between the front and rear canopy on either of the Vendettas I bought from him. I suppose I will have to obtain those pieces from a bits seller or try to reverse engineer my own from plasticard.

I also have to do something with the bases. Like the rest of my Cadians, I am going with a ruined urban basing theme.

So I am using some of this stuff:

...plus bits from GW Cadian kits.

This is what I have so far...

I still need to add a layer of GW sand.

didn´t you recently adviced dave on what to do with the canopies? it really is a shame when something like this happens...

your bases look promising...!

I managed to fix the canopies enough, using brown stuff putty, to satisfy myself. Not perfect but there are no longer any gaps.

All three aircraft are finally table top ready. I could do touch ups and details ad nauseum but I'm ready to stop now.

They have their final matte coat as well as a nice layer of 'ard coat on the lights that need to remain shiny.

First the pic of the original three Vendettas, followed by the latest pic.

And then a shot of the bases WIP.

And then a few extra photos:

I think I am a few hours away from completing this project...just in time to pack the Vendettas away before the movers come on Monday.

i hate moving...i rather stay in one place and hate it there than pack up my stuff and leave... mind you haveing a household for four persons is quite a big one...^^

the vendettas looks very good... specially like the bases... took me a sec to realize that the stands are still taped^^

I agree with you Vik, but I have moved a lot over the years...almost 20 times. I still don't like it but I have learned to live with it. My wife has told me that we will move 2 or 3 more times and then that is it.

The Vendettas are finally done!

Not much to say except that I decided against using pigments. The washes and wet blending were enough for me as well as just a little bit of weathering with an HB pencil.

I'll just roll the pics and keep my mouth shut.

I think my next project will be painting Marbo. He's been waiting for paint for a long, long time.

your wife thinks you will move ? she with the army or what? sounds like that...you have my sympathy then

and... when you use the HB pencil for weathering... you need to seal it with dullcoat right? are you afraid you could ruin the weathering due to the moisture of the varnish?

Vik, she is with me and I am with the Army...but she is ready for me to do something different so we can set down roots somewhere, buy a house that we get to keep, and have a nice garden. She has put up with so much over the years that I want to find her a nice house...as long as it has a good man cave for me and my hobbies.

Yes, you should seal the pencil markings with a matte seal. I cannot buy Dullcote in Germany so I use Army Painter's spray. It worked very well today for the three aircraft, and I should be able to spray the bases tomorrow. My experience is that the seal doesn't affect the pencil marks. We will see tomorrow. I only used it to show stress on the rusted diamond plate (sheet styrene). It is great for that technique.

ah... so you´re the army man check^^
i´ve heard that you fellows are often on the move... seems like you have no need currently for a mattress^^

yeah settling down eventually i think is important... you can only stay for so long a rolling stone...

and i always think of out of the pot varnish... somehow i always forgett about the spray stuff...even tho i own one can^^...

I prefer the brush-on gloss and matte sealers but not for vehicles, because brushes are easier to control and have no odor. However, large models always get the spray!

I can't throw stones at you because my arm isn't strong enough to toss a rock over the pile of my unfinished models towards your house.

I also notice that you just started yet another project: the Mantis Warrior competition. I resisted that temptation.

KingCracker wrote:Man those are some pretty fliers JB

Thanks Kingcracker! It felt good to finally get them looking consistent with the rest of my army. I need to make a list of the models that still are in the project queue. It might petrify me though.

Small elite armies don't have enough dudes on the tabletop.

My other armies are WHFB Orcs and Goblins (a horde), WH40K Orks (a horde), Ultramarines (not a horde but I use a lot of infantry models), and FOW mid-war Germans (not a horde but I use a lot of cheap tanks and infantry).

I did pick up some models for a Death Guard Chaos Marine army but I want it so that I can spam zombies and cultists.

I also seem to have more Dark Vengeance Dark Angel Models than I know what to do with. As a chapter, they kind of leave me feeling cold. Instead of using them as allies for my IG, I decided to go with Space Wolves or Ultramarines.

I don't think I can play small armies so I will just have to figure out how to paint faster or pay someone to paint some of them for me.

and that mantis thing i wanted to do for a long time... gives me an excuse to use different colors for once too^^

Vik,

After the Army Painter matte spray dried last night, I was able to assess its effect on the HB pencil marks this morning. It appears that the marks survived where I used the spray lightly and from the correct distance. However, where I sprayed too thick a coat, the pencil either moved a bit or disappeared entirely. Not a worry for me on the bases, since I just reapplied it. The pencil is not in places where stray hands would rub the marks. But I can see why this technique is not so good for points on a model that will get heavily handled.

Your Mantis Warrior is looking good. He's very dynamically posed and the Ogre bits are cool. Good luck with all the projects! I will stay in my turtle shell and just work on one thing at a time.

Well now, it has been a long while since my last update. I suppose this post will only serve to remind me later that I finally painted something.

In any case, the new IG codex has inspired me to further update my 11th Cadian Assault Regiment. The latest model is a Ministorum Priest. This model is quite useful in the new codex and so I dusted off the GW priest with chainsword that I have had since 2004 and I finished painting him.

Shown below is a picture of how he used to look. Below that are the new pictures of how he looks after quite a bit more paint. Most of his highlights are easy ones but I decided to wet blend his robe.

A lot more figures are going to see some painting love this summer so that I can finally field an army worthy of my Commissar Yarrick. He's a picky dude.

The plan right now is to add 20 conscripts, a new Hydra, a Skyshield (Cheese Pizza) Landing Pad, two Primaris Psykers, an Inquisitor with his retinue, a Grey Knight squad, and a new veteran squad. The next miniature in the que, however, is one of my commissars.

Wish me luck in keeping my motivation. An IG army never ends.

Thanks Vik!

I will try to stay motivated by completing a few minis at a time while hiding the rest of the unpainted ones out of my sight.

If the workbench does not look too scary, I should get more done.

Hmm...I have not painted anything since May 2014. Yep, that sounds about right for me. In my defense, though, I had to move from Germany to the United States in June and I did not get my painting table reestablished until September.

So I have no more excuses, and a painting competition at my local store gave me a good reason to acquire a GW figure that I have long desired: the Commissar with power fist. Now I have little reason to use this mini in my Cadian Imperial Guard army because a power fist isn't all that useful with T3 humans, but I love the sculpt. So i bought one for the painting competition and painted him up.

Here he is, ready for protective gloss and dull varnishes.

I'll turn him in at my FLGS tomorrow and I hope no one drops him. He is a very unbalanced mini. Since he is made of metal, any fall will really do some damage to his paint.

Now I am motivated to tackle my Imperial Guard again. What do I paint next?

Welcome back matey! Indeed, it has been quite some length of time since may...

That commissar looks really crisp! Would be a crime that fully justifies a bolt round in the head to ruin that paint job.

As for next on your desk...have you thought about adding bullgryns to your fold?

Cheers, vik

Thanks VIk! How are your studies coming along? Are they still interfering with your projects?

I would like to build and paint some Ogryns at some point, but I have a pile of resin and plastic that needs attention first. It is hard to justify buying more minis when I have so many sitting on my project shelves. I especially want to paint a Nork Deddog because he is the last Imperial Guard character (other than the non-Cadian IG leaders) that I don't have in my collection.

I am leaning towards either a priest or a Primaris Psyker for my next project. I have the models already. The priest would be more fun because he needs a bit of conversion work.

I also have a lot of vehicles to work on. I really want more Hellhounds to burn the Emperor's enemies with fire.
