It's a tactics forum. How is it not thread-worthy? :S
Vincent305 - When DH first came out there was a big thing about being able to include super-cool Terminators in Guard armies, but a few things quickly came about that made sure that it wasn't worth it:
1. They're too expensive. Sorry, but a squad of 6 Terminators, or another big platoon filled to the gills with heavy weapons? More men is always better.
2. Daemonic Infestation. You take even a single GK model, and every Daemon in your opponent's army gets to come back over and over again. Guard already have enough trouble in HTH as it is, so why give your Chaos opponent's unlimited HTH troops?

It borders on the trendy around here. They don't usually stick, but most Guard players I've seen experiment with a Grey Knight terminator unit a time or two.
|
All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

I've fooled around with it. Outside of BFG style games, it's just not worth it for the following reasons:
1) IG need counter charge, not assault troops. GKs are too slow to serve as really good counter charge units. A savvy player will simply avoid them with his elite combat units, unless he's fielding termie killers (harlies, genestealers, daemonettes, banshees), in which case he's going to seek out a 300pt gimme from your army.
2) It gives your enemy something good to shoot at. All the plasma cannons, demolishers, and starcannons that were wasting their time dropping 2 guardsmen a turn are now having fun.
3) As HBMC said, one unit alone costs you a full platoon. GKs make shooting get worse faster then they make assault get better.
They are fun and fluffy, and some people I know build armies around a core of 6-8 of them, but for the most part they simply don't mesh well with the IG.

One thing to remember is that the general meta-game of 40K sees armies prepare to face MEQs because most of the armies out there are Marines. By taking Marines in your Guard army, you're basically giving your opponent the target you denied them by taking Guard in the first place, making their choices more efficient. You are actually helping your opponent here. Not a good thing!!!

Daemons are about to get their own list, so don't speak so soon yet.

I strongly DISAGREE. Out her in Socal I have the rep for being the guy with Imperial Knights as I call em or (GK Termies). They add a spectacular punch to my army. With them in my list my record last year was somthing like 45 W 4L 3D. They are excellent. The best infantry in the game, backed by what could potentially be the strongest shooting in the game. Take EM. It also gives you a defense against things like fear of the darkness as you can give em a phycic hood. That has saved my butt so many times. The Gk's at 265 or so points do WAY more than a full platoon would. Not just that but thier mere presence on the battlefield will change where you opponent choses to go.

Oh it'd be terrible - all the units you've described are either too expensive for what they do, don't come in large enough numbers to be useful, or are one-hit-wonders and therefore ill-suited as a dedicated assault unit - but it'd be fun!
It's the same reason I love my Mechanised Inquisitorial Storm Trooper army. It's hopeless, but I love using it just 'cause I love using Storm Troopers, especially 6 full squads of 'em!

Taking Seraphim under the same =I= allies rules is generally considered a better choice. You have a far faster and far cheaper counterassault unit, you can move the unit where the girls are most needed andhold yup most opponents.
The only downside: no powerfist.

Seraphim? No powerfist? Well sure, technically. . . .

On the upside, Eviscerator. Just like a Powerfist but with 2D6 Armor Pen.

Its expensive and you lose an attack though, which makes a lot of difference, at least until 5th edition.

There's no other alternative, and it pulls the weight for the squad in the same way a Power Fist does most of the work in an Assault Squad, therefore it's mandatory.

stormtroopers!? Youve got to be kidding me. You said yourself in another thread to never take storm troopers cause they suck. Its called a hellhound and theya re all dead. Not to mention vets do everything they do but cheaper and better. Also, knights are very reliable. They have won tons of games for me and it gives my army the punch that it needs.

He knows they suck. That's his "just for laughs" army list, as his post made pretty clear.

Do me a favour smart_alex, next time you're about to post something: Don't.
Alternativley, engage that grey thing between your ears once and a while, read what other people write, and thatway you can increase your signal:noise ratio and become a productive rather than a disruptive member of Dakka.
