Stalwart Space Marine
|
Well we all know that the Iron Warriors of the Chaos Marines are the masters of siege warfare, but are there any chapters of Space Marines know for the same thing?

A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

Oh frack. Posting on the BlackBerry in a weak signal bubble is more art than science I'm afraid. And on such a low-content post too. Whoops.

Anywho, the Dr is correct. The Imperial Fists are the loyalist siege style chapter. Not so sure about their successors (Black Templars as a siege chapter?!?!)

Imperial fists are actually the ones best at fortifying things. they were famed for making impenetrable fortresses, and the iron warriors were famed for being able to break any defensive fortress. kind of the unmovable object vs. the unstoppable force.
each of the original legions was 100% unique and had a special are of expertise. thus the imperial fists were the other side of the iron warriors

Actually, I think it's the reverse, if you read the fluff in the 4th edition Chaos 'dex, there's a section on Brigannion IV, which the Iron Warriors have heavily fortified, and both loyalist and traitor forces have been repelled again and again. Also, I belive Medrengard is supposed to be a massive fortress-world, completely impervious to planetary assault.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

yes, but who did the emperor recall to fortify the imperial palace? not he iron warriors. he called the imperial fists as they were more of fortress builders, the phalanx is just a flying hive city fortress. not saying that they weren't great at siege craft, just that they were better at fortress building

SM for siege work? Stationing someone at such boring duty with only midrange weapons and short numbers?
it's the Job of IG artillery (with help from ad mech).
encircle a fortified position, unleash your big guns and
wait for submission/Chance to assault. SM would
infiltrate or assault (thunderhawk/droppod/teleport)if
Ordered to get in .Siege is to timeconsuming with
restricted ressources.

The Iron warriors were the best at Seige making by far. The Iron warriors got really annoyed with the Emporor for not letting them make they palace. They broke down the walls and then made the Eternal Fortress. Which the Imperial fists tried to take over, they were so beaten the Legion could not fight for 19 years until it regained it strength

No the Iron Warriors only crushed the IF so bad because they tricked Dorn into entering a trap. The eternal fortress had no command point, which Dorn searched for and instead of a base of operations they found themselves in an open space surrounded by guns. No wonder they were defeated.
THe IF are too honorable to use such a tactic. And the fact that they penetrated the walls means they were quite good at seige

Perturabo knows his brother well and lured him into this trap.
Doesn't proof anything about beeing a "siege chapter".
Question alone implies a marine "chapter" , so it could only be a second founding organization.
Answer is: Space marines don't lay siege! They attack fast or stealthy, hit hard,go for the
next target then! No siege, no garrisoning.
If you want to assemble a "fortress-breaker" chapter, take vanilla SM, Vindicators, devastorsquads, dreadnoughts and terminators.Place everything as droppod/thunderhawk/teleport deployment and be with it.

Siege warfare has two sides. Both laying siege and holding out against a siege are part of siege warfare.
If you're good at defending fortifications against prolonged attack, you're good at siege warfare.
If you're good at making prolonged attacks against fortifications, you're good at siege warfare.

@ space-hoppo: we noticed the abitlities but this helps not the question.
I doubt, siege warfare is done today by IG,marines only acted so when organized in legions.

Mostly, but Chaos always turn to the IW for seige taking over. Due to the 'no quarter' rule. However while the IG does in fact do alot of Seige. The Codex Astaties does say that they should learn how to siege. However many IG will in fact call upon a Imperial Fist to help conduct either Sieging or drfending. Escpecially if the enemy is the Iron Warriors, as even now the Imperial fists will not turn down a fight by them.
