Indeed it's a Line of Sight marker, priced €17.50.

Way too expensive. I'll go to the local armydump and buy a Laserpointer for about 50%.

No, its actually for Tau players. If you can mark your target with this light your Pathfinders don't have to roll to hit with their Markerlights, it is automatically resolved as so. GW did this to reward Tau players for putting up with paying 80 points for the extra Devilfish for so long. It balances things out now.

*Damn almost got first post.

It is interesting that it is priced at 17.50 Euros. The US price is only $10.

This is awesome because when I see someone with a laser pointer in a game I think "hey there's THAT GUY" I'll be sure not play him. What a loser.

but now GW wants there to be thousands of fifteen year old TFGs running around mucking up the sport of it all. And only for 10$.

This is what I was thinking too, but unfortunately, as Smashotron said, GW wants you to use a laser pointer.

I guess that makes ME a looser then. :S

I only get my cheap $2.00 laser pointer out when LoS by building corners or other big objects are in doubt though - and not all the time. If terrain in 5th Ed. is the way I last read then why would you even need one now though. Of course its been a while since I kept up with the rumored rules.

Ok, here I go, unto the breach...

I have often wondered why people do not like using lasers in games to define LOS. Why is it a bone of contention? I have seen many disputes in games over LOS, and considering the scale and the nature of terrain, its pretty understandable. Laser pointers seem like a easy way to help resolve this.

Is the issue using these in a GT or some other big tournament with young kids and 'That guy' opponents who are going to be firing these things around at people?

At a guess, people dislike it because you can often shine your laser pointer through a tiny gap in terrain or units that "shouldn't" be possible commonsensically and then claim LoS based on that. I'm okay with it, but I can see how some would find it annoying.

I don't see the problem with laserpointers.

I mean, most of the time, the people I play with are cool enough to take each others words on whether or not there is LoS.

But I think laserpointers are good at conflict resolution over LoS issues, because the LoS question basically breaks down to:
1) it is possible
2) it is not possible
which the laser pointer answers in a very objective manner.

I've had it go both ways for me with a laser pointer, where I could possibly see something my opponent thought I couldn't, and where I could not possibly see something I thought I could.

I can see this being a problem on a level. I suppose you could claim that under the hail of fire, whatever the terrain is can be shot around, or through. Cover saves will help resolve the rest.

With the whole laser pointer thing, does that mean I'll lose points for being ill-equiped at tournies if I don't have one? It seems a little pointless to me, if you'll excuse the pun.

Yeah, my laser pointer almost never gets aimed at the game.

It has a nifty little goose-neck white LED as well, and it is usually hunting dice lost under the table.
Really.

The problem with laser pointers is that they are an indicator that you take the came way too seriously!

Personally, when it comes to LOS, if it is not clear then I give the benefit of the doubt to my opponent out of sportsmanship. If you are so retentive that you would go to the lengths of pulling out an electronic aid to prove your point, then you are probably an opponent I want nothing to do with.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

I agree with what Mauleed said on this subject a year or so ago:

I won't play against someone using a laser pointer because if we ever disagree on something, then I'm arguing with someone over the use of something that isn't even included in the rules.

Laser Pointers are not part of this game, and all of a sudden I'm glad that the land of Knee-Jerk Reactions - Australia - makes you get a firearms lisence before you can have a laser, given how dangerous 5 miliwatt lasers are these days.

I used to use a periscope for judging true LoS and also to get the model's eye view for fun.

Is that taking things too seriously?

1. As HBMC/Mauleed noted, its not part of the game.
2. You can fudge LOS with a laser pointer just as easily-either windage or elevation. Having said that a laser level sounds better.
3. If you're bringing a laser pointer, you're level of anality is way beyond anything I care to waste two-three hours of my life on.
4. As noted LP's should more properly be used for annoying passers by, the dog and She Who Must Be Obeyed.
5. Is it me or am I just the first paranoid to wonder if GW reverted to "true LOS" just to sell overpriced light sticks?

Lest we forget GW is a small company. Little johnnie getting his eyesight impaired could be a painful (pardon the pun) judgement in one of a slew of jurisdictions in the US. While they have insurance (I'd hope), the deductible may be quite high/insurance company bickering could make this a liquidity event.

Edit-thanks Whitedragon. In some professions dealing with "anality" is not justa job, but an adventure.
