So... for my first real post I'd like to propose an army construction challenge for the ground beef of 40k.
Trying to hammer out a workably somewhat competitive indirect fire Imperial Guard list.

Ground rules for the list.
    1500 points, 1 Detachment
Primary method of damage - Indirect Fire (Mortars, Basilisks, Griffons, Medusa, Heavy Mortars, etc)
NO PLASMA!!! - yes they're the most effective SAW of the Guard, but they're also ubiquitous (and direct fire)
also no doctrines until we can hammer out a competitive core list (gimping an twisted ankles with no crutches....)

Here is my first crack at it:

    1500 pts / 135 models
    - 18 units

    Command Platoon (350pts/23models)
       65 - Command Squad - Senior Officer, Meltagun x1
       65 - Special Weapons Squad - Sniper Rifle x3
       110 - Anti-Tank Support Squad - Lascannon Team x3
       110 - Anti-Tank Support Squad - Lascannon Team x3

    Infantry Platoon #1 (450pts/55models)
       50 - Command Squad - Junior Officer, Meltagun x1
       80 - Infantry Squad - Meltagun, Mortar
       80 - Infantry Squad - Meltagun, Mortar
       80 - Infantry Squad - Meltagun, Mortar
       80 - Infantry Squad - Meltagun, Mortar
       80 - Infantry Squad - Meltagun, Mortar

    Infantry Platoon #2 (450pts/55models)
       50 - Command Squad - Junior Officer, Meltagun x1
       80 - Infantry Squad - Meltagun, Mortar
       80 - Infantry Squad - Meltagun, Mortar
       80 - Infantry Squad - Meltagun, Mortar
       80 - Infantry Squad - Meltagun, Mortar
       80 - Infantry Squad - Meltagun, Mortar

Basilisk with Indirect Fire #1 (125pts/1model)

Basilisk with Indirect Fire #2 (125pts/1model)

... boom?

Thanks for the list PanzerLeader :-)

For the use of mortars, I'm not sure if it would be better put them in heavy support squads (and focus the infantry platoons for direct fire support) or leave them spread across the infantry platoons (thus being able to spread my fire more effectively).
I'm a bit concerned about the reduced model count that the heavy support squads would cause

Put them in HW squads to save time. Think about it!

Heavy Mortars with Infernus shells. You get 9 for 405 pts and they make non-fearless models automatically fallback.

I was going to sugges that.

9 of those plus 3 Basilisks (also with Infernus Shells).

You don't need Mortars then.

Some very dangerous from the IA books, yes.

If you hit your target, they must make a Fall Back move. That's if you hit - you don't even have to kill anything.

Now imagine throwing 12 such templates at an army per turn.

Which specific IA volume? I'd like to start using these rules.

They're in IA1... but I'm sure they'd've been reprinted in other ones, IA3 and possibly IA5.
