With the impending release of 5th Ed, and the great value in the starter box, I'm thinking about starting an ork army. Now I don't have enough time to paint an ork horde so I'm looking for (if it even exists) non horde ork lists that are viable. I doubt I'll be playing in tournaments but it would be nice to be able to win.

So post your best low model count armies!

Kult of Speed would be a good option, if you don't mind painting lotsa bikes and vehicles. The starter box boyz would make great trukk boyz.

There are really low-model-count options like maxing out on mega-armour, but they're not particularly balanced armies.

Kult of Speed works. Deffwing (Mega armour galore)works. Combined arms works. Battlewagon rush works.
It all works.
I am sure some Tournament-heads (tm) is going to disagree and insist on the validity of a single build, but hey.....each to their own.

My friend's warboss + 8 megaarmor nob squad ruinned my necron army single handedly last time we fought. He smashed apart my warrior lines and ripped apart my monolith!!!

I actually hit his squad about 50 times!!!! Only killed 2 models before he hit my line!

I play Kult of Speed exclusively, but I am actually very worried about 5th. I don't think it will survive the changeover, at least the way it is set up now. KOS desperately needs to hide it's trukks until it can zip out and attack, and none of the troop squads have any durability to being shot at.

I have always found that terrain and mission make far more difference to winning or losing do than does the opponent. I believe this will become much more of a factor once I see how it plays out, when the whole opponents army can shoot your trukks no matter where they are on the board.

I assume you're overstating the fact for dramatic effect? Hide behind battlewagons, other truks, get out of los, get out of range, there's a million ways to not get shot. Add to that the more favourable damage charts, cover saves and other boosts orks have got in these rules, I don't think there's much reason to grumble. (I'm a KOS player btw).

Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one and they all stink.

Well no, I don't think I'm being overly dramatic. A lot of the armies competitveness will be table based.
I think a honking big battlewagon to hide all your trukks behind will be a must and then you need to hope it can survive 2 turns. Hiding a trukk behind another one or buggies won't work with true LOS. Cover saves will help quite a bit, but the whole enemy army will be able to shoot at you with it's heavy weapons. I'm waiting to see how it works out, but knowing the types of tables I'm usually on at tournaments, it could be a rough go.

I'm currently running an all-biker KoS (Wazdakka, kitted-out Boss, 28 bikes (2 of 3 + PK nob, 4 of 4 + PK nob), and 6 rokkit buggies/trakks), and I've got a decent win-loss record so far. It's certainly non-horde (though it may not FEEL that way, from the receiving end of all those dakkagun shots), and I'll probably shift things around to make bigger squads and free up nobs for a nob biker squad, but the sheer toughness and mobility makes it fun to run and a terror to those who don't or can't analyze its weaknesses.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I'm trying a combined arms idea with 2 mobs, a battlewagon with some nobs in it. A biker boss, lootas and some fast stuff like stormboys or deathkoptas is good.
