Keeping those heavy weapons lifted away from the body all day long has got to be stressful on the various servos, actuators, and hydraulics in the shoulders:

So why don't the tech priests just extend the shoulder chassis a bit further out from the torso? Then the weapons can hang freely, leaving the various servos, actuators, and hydraulics to their job of raising, lowering, and rotating the weapons. Of course the shoulder armor ought to be elongated slightly, but that's a simple fix:

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

I don't know the mechanical engineering terms, but I think the materials used have properties (tensile strength?) that are SO STRONG they make such questions irrelevant. Yes, that includes cables.

Either that, or it looks like a cool idea.

Second that. "Because it looks cool," seems to be the overriding factor behind every engineering and design decision GW makes.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

That's my whole problem with warmachine minis, why I think they look dumb, is the same reason this reaver is silly. Exposed fuel or coolant lines, pistons and hydraulics is a bad idea...

Wouldn't they put armor over them?

Yea. Dumb. (I dont think pistons look really cool unless you are talking about construction equipment...)

I think that would take away from Jes Goodwin's vision of dinosaurs, robots, aliens, etc.

Personally, I think either way looks cool. The second might even look cooler, with substantially beefed-up shoulder armor.

I did lengthen those shoulder plates when I moved the weapon mounts out (see the gap between shoulder armour and torso) and in real life, a simple "t" shaped cut filled with putty or plasticard should do the trick. Beefier would look cooler, but these look more like the old Epic versions.

Gathering the Informations.

I think the big deal with it on Warmachine is there's hardly anything that can take out the pistons, etc at range, and Infantry charges on a Warjack usually don't end well for the infantry =P

I think the Lucius-pattern (the Forgeworld Epic version at least), has beefed up shoulders. Or maybe it's just the squared-off pauldrons that make it look that way.

In answer to your question, mere mortal:

The Holy Emperor (In whose benevolent light humanity rests forever) has seen fit to allow the mighty Reaver Titan´s stance, in a way best fitting to it´s purpose.

The shoulder mounts of the Holy Emperors Titans have been designed thusly for threefold reasons.

Firstly, to ensure that this mighty bringer of defeat to the Emperors enemies may smite enemies in a full 180 degree arc around it´s torso´s current rotation.

Secondly, to prove to the Emperors foes, that no force, not even lack of Ben-Gay, shall keep the fighting forces of the Imperium down.

And thirdly, so that they may look utterly bad-ass, in order to more proficiently scare the bejeezus out of The Emperors foes.

Back on the path of the Imperial Citizen

Still rolling ones...

the shoulder struts are elongated. and the weapon "arms" are hanging straight down as to relieve stress on the servo/actuators.

If there is a crescent shaped piece of plasteel/ceramite/bob's wonder metal in the shoulder, theoretically the arms are resting on that, and not being held by servos when at that angle. This would mean that the shoulders wouldn't need to be made bigger thus saving materials and presenting a slightly smaller target, while still allowing the arms to stand out from the body for mobility.

That's my excuse.

Thanks Skavenfreak.

Guess I should have photoshopped in big red circles around the bits that I changed - or at least described what I did. Skavenfreak is correct - I moved the shoulders out from the torso and elongated the struts. You'll notice that I didn't move the weapons any further away from the body, just the shoulders. I also lengthened the shoulder armor.

I also changed the angle of the "elbow" (as seen head on) from an acute angle to a right angle. Why? Well, since the arm/shoulder interface is a socket joint, when powered down, the weapons mounted at an acute angle would swing inward like a pendulum and crash into its body due to gravity pulling them down. This wouldn't happen with the wider shoulders and 90 degree elbow which allow them to hang perpendicular to the shoulder mount while still affording them the full range of motion.

Just sayin'

Yea, I often am amazed at the lack of analysis that goes into FW models. They are almost purely cosmeticly designed. I built 2 thunderhawks, and the flaps that were hinged couldnt even OPEN! because of the rightt angle geometry of the wing.

Embarasing...

This Titan is s subtler example of that (I still think it looks cool though) I like your suggestions better.
