So, after browsing around my old models I have to decided to pull my old guard out for some 5E fun.

Here is a list I plan on using for 5E, any thoughts or opinions?

HQ
Command Platoon
Command Squad 115
Junior Officer
Honorifica Imperialis, plasma pistol
4 Plasma gunners

Elites
Hardened Veterans 75
Veteran Sergeant and 4 veterans
3 Meltaguns

Storm Troopers 125

Vet sergeant with power weapon
9 storm troopers with flamer, g launcher

Troops
Infantry Platoon

Command Squad 80
Junior Officer
4 Plasma gunners

Infantry Squad 80
Plasma gun, heavy bolter

Infantry Squad 80
Plasma gun, heavy bolter

Armoured Fist 165
Plasma gun, heavy bolter
Chimera, multi las, hvy bolter

Infantry Platoon

Command Squad 80
Junior Officer
4 Plasma gunners

Infantry Squad 95
Plasma gun, lascannon

Infantry Squad 85
Plasma gun, Missile Launcher

Heavy Support

Leman Russ Battle Tank 155
Lascannon

Leman Russ Battle Tank 155
Lascannon

Leman Russ Battle Tank 165
Lascannon, heavy bolters

1455, 45 points to spen, no idea what for though?

Doctrines:
Drop Troops, COD

17 plasma guns, 3 meltaguns, 1 plasma pistol, 1 flamer, 1 grenade launcher. 3 leman russ, 1 chimera (used mainly as shield and fire support), 80 models all up.

Was thinking about shaving some points from somewhere for a unit of 3 autocannons, which would cost 95 points. Not sure if its worth it or not.

So what do you guys think?

You tryin' to get your HQ killed? Standard Bearer. Honorifica. Iron Discipline. No other weapons or upgrades. 81 points. They hide, and don't die.

Nothing wrong here.

Battlekai wrote:Storm Troopers 125

Why pay for Stormtroopers and not use their Ballistic Skill? Why give them a weapon (the flamer) that makes no use of the Ballistic Skill you're paying for? Two Meltas, two Plasmas, or don't bring 'em.

Command Squad 80
Junior Officer
4 Plasma gunners

K, but you need Iron Discipline.

Infantry Squad 80
Plasma gun, heavy bolter

Infantry Squad 80

Nothing wrong here. I'd take flamers over plasmas to keep the points down, but still, not terrible.

Armoured Fist 165
Plasma gun, heavy bolter
Chimera, multi las, hvy bolter

What exactly is your single AV12 target going to do besides be just that - a target. By taking 3 AV14 vehicles and 1 AV12 you are diluting your army and making it easier for your opponent to select targets. You either take 2-4 Chimeras (or 2 and 2 Hellhounds), or none.

Command Squad 80
Junior Officer
4 Plasma gunners

Iron Discipline is mandatory, again.

Infantry Squad 95
Plasma gun, lascannon

Infantry Squad 85
Plasma gun, Missile Launcher

Why are you taking a Missile Launcher? Why are you taking a Missile Launcher when you have points to spare? The Lascannon is better than it at killing AV14 tanks, and the Autocannon is better at killing AV10-12 and equal against AV13. And it costs the same. So, again, why take an ML?

Furthermore, how are you going to kill tanks with only one infantry based Anti-Tank weapon (a single Lascannon). Tanks are tougher in 5th - much tougher - and 1 Lascannon ain't gonna cut it.

Leman Russ Battle Tank 155
Lascannon

Leman Russ Battle Tank 155

Leman Russ Battle Tank 165
Lascannon, heavy bolters

And putting your Lascannons here won't help either. I don't claim to know how effective Battlecannons will be in 5th, although I suspect they're going to go down in power (and just watch, they'll be higher in price in the new Codex - just you wait!), so if you want to get the best out of your Russ you're going to need 3 Heavy Bolters to go along with that Battlecannon (for firing at spread out targets or clumped targets - can't say which'd be the best yet).

Furthermore, why are you mixing Lascannons with Heavy Bolters? They have to fire at the same target, so the Heavy Bolters can't kill what the Lascannon shoots at and the Lascannon is overkill against what the Heavy Bolters fire at.

Doctrines:
Drop Troops, COD

Add Iron Discipline to this. And you forgot that Storm Troopers is your other Doctrine.

Anyway, in 5th you're going to be taking more and better cover saves, making Cameleoline a very good choice. You're going to want Iron Discipline because... well... it's the best Doctrine in the Codex. COD is free as is Drop Troops, so that's good. You need more men. You have 5 Infantry Squads (including the Armoured Fist). That's enough for 1000 points, not 1500. You need infantry based Anti-Tank weapons. Your Infantry should be doing one of two things - taking casualties (HB squads) or killing tanks (Lascannon squads). Your tanks should be killing Infantry, something they won't do with Lascannons.

If possible add a team or two with 3 lascannons for anti tank and anti MC.

Fair call on the lascannons, and good points in some of the other areas.

Would 17 plasmaguns not account for anything though in the way of anti tank and anti MEQ?

I realise I need something else though for anti AV14, perhaps dropping the lascannon from that unit and putting in a 3 lascannon support unit

Plasma Anti Tank not so much. You run into a Land Raider/Mono. Your Fethed.

You could do the 3 Lascannon support.

Storm Trooper isnt worth it Vet Upgrade is better for better Troops as well. and cheaper.

What H.B.M.C. said is what you should do.

I would love to play against it.

LRBT + Lascannon = Bad. Bring the HB sponsons and sit like the bunker you are.

Armored fist...they hit like chipmunks. Don't bring them.

Infantry squads should have lascannons.

Command squads are either suicide units or there to provide leadership. They do not do both.

If you bring heavy bolters, you will run into heavy bolters...and you will lose yours before they lose theirs.
Bring autocannons instead.

I don't bring little guns in infantry squads, trading a plasma gunner for a marine doesn't really excite me.

I guess you're trying to be helpful.

Even from my short time on these boards I'm getting used to your condescending tone.

If you weren't intending to be, then thank you i think.

You can always wait for HBMC to tell it to you straight.

I'm not being condescending, it's merely difficult to tell new people their lists stink without driving them away.

We want you to stay.

Don't we, precious.

Yes...

Yeah that's fair enough.

I just wasn't sure where you were coming from that's all.

I was just looking to build an army with mostly what I currently have without having to buy too much more.

This is why the Leman Russ are they way they are for instance

Get a pair of clippers. Cut those Lascannons off. You do not want them on there. Replace them with Heavy Bolters (from any spare sponsons you might have). Quite an easy conversion. Easier to do whilst you're building the tank, but certainly not impossible to do after the fact.

Yea it sucks getting heavy bolters on them when you already have lascannons.

Looking better though if you follow his instructions

Kk, will make those changed.

Is it advisable with 5E to add the heavy bolter sponsons as well? I may have them sitting around with any luck

Dunno yet. Leave 'em off and you can always add them later.

OTT but if you're doing that a good option is very small magnets. Cut of the lascannon and magnetize the end. That way you can swap out heavy bolters or lascannons as you desire.

You really should just have the Heavy bolter but that can work to.
