I don't play 40K, but I know a bit about the game just from being around all these years. We were looking at pictures of the 'counter sprue' at my FLGS the other day, and trying to figure out what effect each counter was supposed to represent. It was a lot of fun, but we still aren't sure how correct our guesses were.
Is there something, somewhere, that tells what each counter is supposed to represent?

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

You don't need them to play, but if you're like me, you'll want to have them to play. On the other hand, are the vehicle damage dice now going to be obsolete for rolling vehicle damage? Haven't had a chance to look at the new tables and compare.

Considering the addition and subtraction from the die roll with the new chart, you'll proabably be referring to it anyway. May as well just roll a D6.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity...... |

You can also use them to mark vehicle damage results if you don't buy the new counters.

I recommend instead spending $2 on a package of poker chips, $1 on a marker and $1 on a package of circular stickers. Write "stunned", "pinned", "Falling Back", "Fortuned" etc. on the stickers. Affix stickers to poker chips. Ta-da! It took me about 10 minutes to make up all the counters I've ever needed. And when I lose some, it's easy to make more.
This has the advantage that you can make whichever markers are appropriate for you. Also, you can use different colours of poker chip to your advantage: red chips for permanent conditions (wounds, immobilized etc.), white chips for temporary things (stunned, pinned etc.) and blue for special effects (fortune, lurking etc.).

There's always litko aero systems, if you want custom
tokens made, or you can glue words underneath clear
glass beads and put felt on the bottom. Someone did this
for Warmachine, and the glass magnified the words.
