Why do I keep reading post talking about how it isn't a laser pointer? It even says on the website This pack contains one class-two laser product.

Denial, it's the first stage of mourning the fact that little kids are going to be running around the shop with laser pointers over thier ears shining them in everyone's eyes. Eventually they'll move through the stages and accept that they spent money on something they don't really need.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

Anybody have any idea how big it is? That would be sweet if it was so small that the curve piece is meant to go over a figures head to shoot the laser from his actual eye line.

I'm gonna buy 14 of them and convert every russ in my armored company to have the pointer in the barrel of the battle cannon. In the new rules if you do that you don't have to scatter your ordinance!

i had the misfortune to work in a GW store in the era of the bendy pointy plastic measuring stick. those of you who have been playing for a while will remember them and possibly have the scars to prove it.

giving lets face it a shop full of children pointy sticks is stupid. i must have broken up a half dozen pointy stick fights per day and witnessed a good few rather serious pokings or slappings. all good fun mind you the little snots (some of which are proberly in their early 20's by now) had it coming.

however giving children laser pointers will end in tears. do i remember correctly that these are banned or close to it because of the many many incidents these things caused with people trying to blind people and the like. hmmm you have to wonder.

i give it 6 months before they dissapear off the shelves.

its all fun and games til somebody looses an eye

I'm sorry but this arugement has pissed me off since laser pointers first became chic:

Class 2-Low Power Visible Lasers (top)
Class 2 lasers are low power lasers or laser system in the visible range (400 - 700 nm wavelength) that may be viewed directly under carefully controlled exposure conditions. Because of the normal human aversion responses, these lasers do not normally present a hazard, but may present some potential for hazard if viewed directly for long periods of time. A continuous wave (cw) HeNe laser above Class 1, but not exceeding 1 mW radiant power is an example of a Class 2 laser.

Class 2M lasers are low power lasers or laser system in the visible range (400 - 700 nm wavelength) that may be viewed directly under carefully controlled exposure conditions. Because of the normal human aversion responses, these lasers do not normally present a hazard, but may present some potential for hazard if viewed with certain optical aids.

From this we can deduce that the only little snot nosed kids that are getting ANY kind of retinal damage (read: damage, not destruction) are the ones who have overcome the instinct of self preservation that all creatures on this Earth possess and have somehow trained their eye to stay open and focused on the pin point of light for LONG PERIODS OF TIME, whilst enduring blinding red spots of PAIN.

Gentlemen, there was a great man by the name of Charles Darwin that had a theory on these kinds of people. If, by some measure of a miracle, this laser pointer DOES blind some people think of it as a bit of chlorine in the gene pool.

Well, I doubt these are anything more powerful than the lasers you can get in pet stores here to amuse your animals. If they are the same, they're pretty weak, and the little tykes'll are still in more danger from super glue than the lasers, methinks.

Now the laser I bought from work is a different story, 12,500 range green laser class IIIa 'day pointer'. It's a little bit overkill, but it's great for encouraging people to paint their miniatures, as when you hit a bright pewter surface with it, the reflection blinds everyone in a 10' radius. (Just kidding, but it is bright, and I did stop using it after one Apocalypse battle, because it really was a hazard.)

The GW laser would probably have to be severely and intentionally misused for a prolonged period to cause harm. But then again, I'm no expert, so maybe we'll see the release of a braille 40k rulebook in 5 years when all the foolish kiddies have eradicated each others' eyesight.

*edit* Alex beat me to it. Well said, sir.

Ohhh, is that what it's for? So when you put your head at eye line your opponent can see the results?! If so, that is completely absurd.

All of my gaming buddies and I are grown men, but we still can't resist the urge to whack the crap out of anyone who starts rules-lawyering when those things are around. Usually we use tapes, but if someone happens to forget, then we start using the red ninja sticks, and before you know it, someone is getting whacked.

I think it's the nice whipping sound the make as they slice the air that is so addictive.

Hi guys

The Markerlights are not designed to be hung over the ears for bionic eye type effect (although that would look funny!) The semi-circle on the end is designed to go over the head of your miniatures so that you can be assured the Line of Sight is their Line of Sight.

And thanks AlexCage for posting the class 2 laser information. Hopefully it will calm the concerned.

The 'whippy sticks' ruled. Every night was kiddie night at the store I was at. But it got to the point that if someone was getting out of line, I didn't have to say anything. I'd take said whippy stick and slap it against the extra material in my pant leg like a Commissar with a riding crop. It made a nice cracking sound that could be heard across the battle bunker. The more 'seasoned' kiddos would hear this and quickly gave the offending kiddo some direction lest he be taken out back for summary execution. The kiddos are actually quite funny when you get them in line.

I more or less agree with you, but I want to bring this up because I would like to hear from someone who knows for sure. I had heard that the human retina does not sense pain from being damaged by intense light. I was in a situation that seems to be analogous but might not be, because it involved my corneas ( I was later told by the Ophthalmologist).

I was skiing in Snowshoe in West Virginia, and I didn't wear any sunglasses or goggles because it was overcast and I figured I didn't need to ( Thats a mistake even if you were skiing under lights, because of the possibility of snow or foreign objects that could strike your eye ). Apparently, there was enough UV exposure or reflected light or something that I damaged my cornea of one of my eyes ( interestingly I don't recall which one). I experienced no pain while skiing or riding the lifts, and did not for several hours afterward. However, later that night I had a foreign body sensation ( not really pain ), and I lost *all* of the sight in that eye over a period of two or three hours ( IIRC ). Oddly, like I mentioned, it was only one eye. I can only presume it was one eye because I was consistently skiing in one directions ( I have to assume for some reason I wasnt exposed as much on the lifts, perhaps the reflection off the snow at ground level, or perhaps I got the exposure on the lifts). At that point I had some pain, but not severe. I went to the doctor, but there wasnt much to do I found out except allow it to heal. It took half a week, IIRC, to regain my sight. I had corrective surgery a few months before this trip, perhaps that had something to do with it.

Does anyone have enough medical knowledge to tell me if retina damage could occur painlessly from lasers or non-collimated light that is very intense?

Incidentally, I'm not seeing the Darwinist argument. Unfortunately blindness in one eye or even both will not stop you from reproducing. It could also be argued that the argument is a "ladder of evolution" argument which isnt scientifically valid. Ironically enough I was just talking about that today.

The whole thing is quite gimmicky anyway, with most countries laws, they won't be able to sell the products to minors so they can hardly claim the things to be necessary. I can imagine most shops will end up not allowing them to be used in store. Not to mention Fantasy and previous editions of 40k have/had true LOS without any need for such a thing.

Still, it is a very weak laser of course. More a Lasgun than a laser really.

And again, if you want to go and hang a hook over your miniatures, fine. Just don't complain if it ruins your paint job. You won't see me doing so. And it still doesn't explain how you're going to hang the hook around the head of a Wraithlord or a Dreadnought or a Carnifex.

And I still say that you will have at least one person at the FLGS using them as I've said.

I used to work in a sporting goods store back in the day. The laser target painter was finally portable enough to mount on a rifle or shotgun so we got a few to try and sell. They were expensive for first generation stuff so they sat in the case for quite a while. I was bored late one evening and got one out to play with. Shining the dot around the store was ok but then I tried it outside on a stop sign and it lit up like crazy! I waited for no traffic of course, then started lasering street signs, directional and traffic signs. Road signs and emergency vehicles use a vinyl sticker material for lettering, stripes and background colors. This particular vinyl has microscopic beads of glass that makes it reflect more light, hence the effect with the laser. Try it with a laser pointer if you can do it safely, It's very cool...

If more of us valued food and cheer and 40K over hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

I'm not worried about eye damage, but can you imagine how jeffin' annoying they're going to be at large tournaments, constant little dots appearing all over the shop, getting in your periferals, on you, your table, the walls, and yes, your eyes. That's going to be no fun. Also, if I don't take a laser pointer to a GT am I going to get marked down for not having all the 'necessary' equipment? I certainly hope not.

Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one and they all stink.
