2 4xMeltagun units, 4 BS4 4xplasmagun units, 3 BS4 3xplasmagun units, 3 hellhounds and 3 leman russes to thin out hordes with alacrity.

Double improved comms to better manage what drops in.

This won't be a legal list when the IG get redone, but it's terrifying in 5th since Deep Strike is always allowed.

I've stopped playing it lately but it's very hard to deal with.

Do you use Shaeffer for anything much, or just keep him alive/hidden to keep most of your army immune to morale effects?

He only affects his own unit, if I remember correctly.

He is an extra plasma shot, that's about it. I have charged him into CC when his units been wiped out, but guard + CC = funny. He's great for taking a bolter round instead of one of the other guys. Same with his 2nd in command.

Both of them go with 2 plasma units and drop.

The other way to do this as a joke make them all pskyers then take that one pskyer killa.

It kills most armies dead.

You drop, they lose a unit, you lose the unit you dropped on their turn.

Hordes don't handle the hellhounds and LR very well, which was a weakness of the original all-drop version of this list.

Now with more cover saves, it's more difficult to get large numbers of easy kills but with the tanks providing template weapons people won't cluster up.

Besides, you can usually open a hole in the cover saves just by hitting someone in the right place with the tank fire. The interlocked cover save formation works fine, until someone starts making you take 10 guys off at a time. Then, not so much.

why do you have sharp shooters ?
Waste of points but i guess you have nothing to spend on it.

But do you DS them ? or Infil.

And what are your subunits ? 2 men each.

Do you think this is the single most competitive Guard list possible with the current codex, or do you favor something else, such as a horde-style gunline without tanks?

I think in a year, horde gunline will be better. For a little while, then a guard dex will come out. Then who knows.

Right now, so long as the scrubs (there's alot of them) are playing 40 model armies...this army will crush the life out of them.

It isn't as 'autowin' versus hordes or mech in 4E, but in 5E it does very well against both because your vehicles don't die...and against mech there is no real protection against deep striking plasma/melta squads over 2-3 turns.

I think people know how to play against horde guard. Most players have no experience against a Last Chancers list like this.

As far as I know, I'm the only player to take anything like this to a GT.

I'm sure someone will chime in soon and contrary me.

How'd it do at the GT?

I ask because I'm probably going to shamelessly copy this, since it does exactly what I want in a drop force. Not like I'm going to go to a GT myself, but enh.

I tried somthing similar at gladiator. I did not like it. Personally I think standard guard are better. However I heard that in V5 you will always be able to deep strike so things may change.

You can always deep strike in 5E.

Infiltrate/reserve too.

I did answer your question.

I usually score 80-100 points at the GT's, depends on the bonus point system and how dumb the missions are.

Hopefully this year there will just be random missions out of the book for everyone instead of chosen missions, but that might not be doable at a major tournament. Too much work. lol

I think it's too much based on one turn of shooting. I'd rather have a more consitent force. But it's definitely not bad. The only other thing is a distinct lack of troops for 5th edition scoring. But, if you kill everything that works too.

Not my style, but it'll definitely work for a good portion of players.

That's my point. With random game length, you can get stuck out there for a 7th turn. That means your little 4 man squads (with plasmaguns killing themselves as well) will be getting shot to peices. Also, each little 4 man-doofer squad is a KP.

So, in 5th, I wouldn't be caught dead with a list like this. You will loose in kill points, and probably in an objective grab, simply because you have small units. They may be destructive small units, but they are small, and have no armor and poopy toughness.

Conclusion = Play the hell out of it for the next month, then drop it when 5th is out. It won't be bad, but not as good.

And the difference between this list and any other IG list in a KP mission is what?

Maybe play it in 5E more (read this as: I've played it a dozen times in 5E, and you've played it...zero times?) before saying it's trash.

IG have serious issues in 5E, without a FAQ giving them some kind of loophole...they're just going to have to suck it up in 5E until they get a new Codex.

This army wipes you out btw. So losing to KPs and objectives is questionable. It's very difficult to contest when you're tabled.

So you cant take objectives. It may wipe you out.
But there's always cover saves and inv. that can nerf this down. then you get countered and killed.

We can minimize kill poitns by fielding more resilient, costlier units - storm troopers, armored fists (chimeras), and lots of vehicles. Your army also has many small units (4x4man, 3x5 man?) Those die quick, and are an easy kill point.

IG do not have serious issues in 5E. They have issues, but I think just about everybody but Tau have some kind of issues. IG actually probably get a net gain. IG doesn't need a loophole.

As far as your army wiping another army out - forseeable, but again, I don't like to put all my eggs on board with the deepstrike stork. You could have a splediferously gakky turn of rolling, and say 2 squads or 3 squads make it on board - they do little damage, and get whiped. Then the rest come in, and you get whiped. It's too random - IG are NOT about randomly awesome shots or heroic defenses. They are about large numbers, statistical averages, and playing towards those things. If you want an elite army that you can push like this, you're better off with marines or something more "Stoic".

Also, don't forget, we aren't the only ones who get cover bonuses in 5th. Everybody else gets them too. So, your little strike teams of plasma get f-ed up by a squad in rocks, or a tank partially behind a hill, who says 'no bueno' when you try to melt it.

If you choose to play your guard with a lot of flux and possibility for differences in outcomes, go ahead and play an army like this.

Hmmm no one asked for a big boring gunline army though, did they?

I'm pretty sure they wanted a drop army with tanks.

Make better. I'd like to see it.

Btw, 8 plasma shots (even going into cover, though it shouldn't) is still better odds of killing marines than flashlights are.

You can sit back with a marine SAFH if you want to, but the new marines are going to be about leaving CC.

Lists like this will still hurt them, because this list isn't focused around CC.

Gun Line became Amazinger over night. lol (they were already amazing)

8 Plasma shots Youd down any where the whole 8-3 if there in cover.

This isn't a Drop Army it's a commando Army.

Keep thinkin about this Army would have trouble yea you have to tanks. But If you infantry that supports the tanks is killed then your tanks are in trouble.

IG gives up kill points like candy.

Everyone has 4+ cover saves.

Everyone can run.

IG tarpits and counterattack units aren't as good as one-off suicide units because they get evaporated in CC.

True, but without consolodation into combat should it not be true that no unit will survive past its first assault into an ig gunline?

Ok, so your assualt unit vaporizes one of my 85pt las/pla squads. ( Yawn )

The following turn its staring down the barrels of the entire gunline.

What am I missing here, seems like gunline gets a huge bonus over 4E

Killpoints will be problematic for pure infantry gunline, but it seems as though the rest of the pluses outweigh that.

Still you have played 5th a lot, and I have played twice so I am going in full theoryhammer mode at the moment.

There IG they Jump and die.

But with everything being 4+ cover Camo line will greatly help and go to a 3+ cover.

So they can move forward to Tarpit or take obj. at last min.

Tarpiting is still effective.

So they get better not worse.

Unless this is bizzaro world and everything is back wards.
