Subject: 5th 1750pt IG-3 Hellhounds-Do I need 3 Leman Russ?
|

Been Around the Block

Putting together a 1750 IG tourney army for 5th, and very much thinking about using 3 hellhounds. I know how good they seem for 5th, but also aware that as I was not considering using any other tanks, they would get targeted quick.
My question, is whether I NEED to use 3 Leman Russ to take the brunt of the anti tank firepower, or can I get by with just using 3 hellhounds, and filling the rest of my points with guardsmen in a tournament atmosphere. Taking 3 hellhounds and 3 Leman Russ leaves less than 1000 points for troops.
Thoughts?

LRBTs are the best Heavy Support choice in most cases; Hellhounds are the best Fast Attack. Bring 3 of each and you'll be happier for it.

Having 3 (and only 3) AV 12 targets to attract all the AT firepower is probably a losing strategy.
I think you can manage a middle ground - 1-2 Russes, in combination with the Hellhounds, should draw enough of the heavier AT fire to give your Hellhounds a fighting chance.

Agree 100% if you are planning to move these badboys forward. Target saturation is the key if you plan to keep them on the offensive. A few Chimeras as moving cover might help a bit too.
If you plan on keeping them in the defense, you could be able to get away with just 3 HH if your terrain permits (LOS rules in 5th).

The other way to make 3 HH work is if you take lots of Chimeras. If everything is AV12, you can start annoying your opponent by throwing Chimeras down his throat.
But yeah, don't take 3 Hellhounds and no other tanks. People are already irrationally scared of HH's, don't make it any worse by presenting them as the only target.

Never really understood this perception, myself. They certainly are one of my favorite FA choices in the entire game but I've played against opponents who act like they're loaded with never-miss apocalypse orbital strikes.
On topic, yes, I'd do 3 LRBT and 2-3 HH. With HH providing useful close-range template barrages I would not run a Demolisher instead of a LRBT.

Maybe it's a stigma from 2nd Ed, where Hellhounds actually did cause Fear. But even then in 2nd Ed they weren't that great. They were terrible at the start of 3rd too. They only got better in the current Codex.
Who wants to take bets to see if:
A). They make them S6 AP3 to mimick the Land Raider thingywhatsit from the new SM Codex?
B). They remove its 24" range.
C). They make it asplode all the time like in 3rd Ed.
D). They make it scatter.

I'll bet they make it scatter - that seems to be the new M.O. for 5th Ed weapons like these. I'd be pretty sad if they do make them splode all the time. That'd be the suck.

I bet C)
then A), B) and D) in order ;-)
Honestly, if we knew one rule of thumb regarding GWs rule design, I'd say it is that they always tend to overcompensate for any bolstering of a model that has been ok beforehand. So it is C) to make the model cohesive with the new LR rules-wise, and then the rest to overcompensate...

bring 3 of each. with tanks getting harder to kill 6 tanks is such a pain the the neck for most armies to kill.
with regard to any possible changes to HHs:
its unlikely that it will be made to scatter. famer templates generally dont scarre and i cant see GW changing this.
the redeemer S6 AP3 flamers are super heavy flamer and not inferno cannon i believe. they just use a normal flamer template and dont have any additional range.
a HH is supposed to be similar to a vietnam war napalm cannon rather than just a big flamer so i recon the inferno cannon stats wont change. if they did make it S6 AP3 it would lose its range.
i could possible see them bringing back the exsplotion rule, but HH arent really overpowered, even in 5th. theyre only good against lightly armoured infantry and that doesnt change much. all that will happen is a possible slight increase in points.

I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live? |
