Not sure if this is the right part of the forum to ask, but I have been away from 40k from start of 3rd edition, and am back because I heard about the new edition (5th).
What I'm wondering is how can I check what order the most recent codecs for each race were released
The games workshop sites are not much help, I just want to know so I don't pick up the race which is weak and hasn't seen any love for a long time.

Ask?
The most recent are Orks, Chaos Daemons, Chaos Space Marines, and Eldar. Space marines are expecting a new 'dex at the start of 5th, with Dark Eldar, Space Wolves, and IG following (not necessarily in that order)

What do you mean by 5th ed worthy? If you mean written with 5th Ed. in mind, that'd be Dark Angels(newer than Eldar), Chaos Marines, Orks, and Daemons, released in that order. Perhaps Eldar.
If you means usable in 5th? That'd be all current codecii.
Worth anything competitively? That's debatable.

Just to add, some of the older codices (Witch Hunters, Dark Eldar) are still very competitive in 5th ed. Newness does not necessarily correlate with effectiveness.

Thanks for the info.
Yeah I realise all can be competitive. And I think in 5th the new cover saves are going to make non-meq units better.
I'm just trying to see what army may be good for myself.
I really want something that can do bit of everything well, high model count if I want, Low model count if I want. Good Shooting, very good close combat. I also want an army where it would be good without duplicating any units.
Without the codex's I can't really tell who has what & how good they are...
I'm thinking chaos are the army (maby the only) that could fit the bill...
They have some of the best in close combat right? really good shooting if I want it? no need to duplicate troop types really with the different flavours of marine? (the different flavours look really different too). could they get to fairly large numbers?
I worried about them losing the different types of demons from their list.
I suppose what I'm looking for are vastly varying stat lines & troop types in the army and the ability to be competitive(not high-end tourney competitive but able to beat more competitive players with tourney lists in pick-up-games) without duplicating any units.
I'm thinking Eldar might be a possibility. Or Tau(I know they are shooty but can you go kroot heavy?)
I don't really know much. Can you shed some light on some races for me?

Well, Orks are a horde style race that usually has a TON of characters on the field at one time, they are the most CC oriented race in the game. However, they have strong guns that can put out a ton of shots, just don't expect to hit with all of them lol.
Tau are the most popular race in the game. They are a very shooty army, boasting some of the most powerful guns in the game. They are terrible at CC, and should avoid CC like the plague. If you want to be different from most players, don't play Tau. However, you can go Kroot heavy, I actually have a friend who plays a Kroot army. He tells me that it's pretty effective, all of your units get to infiltrate, so all of your Kroot are in CC by turn 2. Kroot, being good on numbers and CC skill, this usually wins him the game very fast.
Chaos can be unpredictable, but have some of the toughest units in the game. An example of these are the Plague Marines, who are Toughness 5 and have Feel no Pain!, making them very hard to kill. Chaos Sorcerers also has more offensive psychic powers than most other armies, but are more prone to becoming victim to the Perils of the Warp, when Daemons attack for tapping into the Warp.
There, 3 of the many armies of 40k covered ever so slightly, more light to be shined on these armies though.

Sounds like Eldar to me.
Tyranids maybe to a lesser extent, but you'll have to 'duplicate units'.
Kroot heavy Tau, I don't see being that competitive. I mean, compared to firewarriors, Kroot have good CC stats...but then you factor in I3 and no armour save...

I gotta say Marines are still the most popular army by far and don't see that changing anytime soon. I don't think SM or Tau are what you're looking for. Tau can get kinda cookie and suffer horendously in CC. As was said, Kroot are better than FW, but this doesn't make them an effective CC army. It just makes them better than FW.
Eldar really seem to fit the bill for varying stat lines, high/low model count, shooty/ CC oriented. + they've got good skimmers. Then there's the fact that you can avoid duplicate units if you choose to.
I don't believe C:E was written with 5th in mind, but they'll be fine when the switch gets flipped. You might get to make some nice conversions done when C ark Eldar hits.

Good shooting, very good CC, model count that can be high or low and no duplicate units.
Eldar - thats's the only thing that really fits those criteria, particularly with a Biel-tan theme.
