Hey guys, first post here on Dakka dakka, and on any forum related to warhammer since the release of 4th edition. Im jumpin back into the game, and i've decided to build a 500pt marine force to get back into the game and painting before i repaint/rebuild my guardsmen.

Captain
power sword,bolt pistol, frag&krak grenades

9 Tactical Marines
missle launcher,plasma gun
Veteran Sergeant
power fist,combi-flamer

4 Scout Marines
heavy bolter, 3 botlers
Scout Marine Sergeant
chain sword,bolt pistol

5 Assault Marines
melta bombs,plasma pistol, flamer

This little force seems like it'll be fun to play with and paint. One thing im not sure on is if i should put the veteran sergeant in the assault marine squad to give it some proper melee bite, though i really like the thought of how that tactical squad will feel on the field. Another is i have no idea what chapter to choose, what do you'll think based on my wargear/unit selections? Also, i think this force would be great to have ready for use to lure a friend or my brother into the game. All comments are welcome and appreciated P.S: As for models i have everything still in spur but the scouts. (turns out i have a 4 scouts with bolters, and 1 with cc weapon pistol. I think i've decided on doing a raven guard themed list, i like the simple paint job, and they Doctrines of war, as in tactics they use fluff wise. Guess my question now is what should my next 500 points be, where should i take it to make it a fun, smart 1000pts of ravenguard?

I really am not fond of scouts when I can have marines in power armor.

Add more marines, and some transport options.

In my experience fighting against them (that being said, take my advice with a grain of salt) I'd say bring a command squad so your commander isn't so vunerable.

I play

To follow up with Aeddon, I would agree that something for the HQ would help. Possibly a jump pack so that he can just hide in the assult squad?

Also, unless you are taking sniper rifles (which I do personally like), then I would drop the scouts for marines.

Finally, I don't like combi weapons. I would use those points to upgrade the ML to a LC.

Orkses is never beated in battle. If we win we win, if we die we die so it don't count as beat. If we runs for it we don't die neither, so we can always come back for anuvver go, see!

Putting a jump pack on your commander so he can go along with the assault squad should be your first priority. In your back field, he doesn't really do anything. I would also recommend a vet sargent with a power fist for your assault squad. It gives them some extra kick and anti vehicle power.

As for how to expand up to 1000 points, well it depends on where you want to go with your army. If you want long range, get some devistators and maybe a hellfire dreadnaught. If you want close range, then get rhinos and more tac squads. If you want speed then rhinos and land speeders or maybe more assault squads. If you want hand to hand, then more assault squads are the way to go. All are viable options but you need to have some kind of vision about what you want to do or you're just going to end up with a motly collection of stuff.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

If you have to choose between giving the assault squad and the tactical squad the powerfist, definetly go with the assault squad.

HQ needs a jump pack.

I don't think the Scouts will do much. I'm guessing at 500 pts there isn't a huge need for flanking.

Alright to start hes the revisioned list with a few options

Captain
power sword, bolt pistol, frag nades
melta bombs, jump pack

9 Tactical Marines
missle launcher,plasma gun
Marine Sergeant
bolter

(Troop Choice #1)
4 Marine Scouts
hvy bolter, 2 sniper rifles, bolter
Marine Scout Sergeant
bolter

(Troop Choice #2)
4 Tactical Marines
hvy bolter -OR- frag grenades
Marine Sergeant
bolter -OR- chain sword, bolt pistol

(Troop Choice #3)
5 Marine Scouts
hvy bolter -OR- frag grenades
chain swords, bolt pistols
Marine Scout sergeant
chain sword, bolt pistol *frag grenades " " "

4 Assault Marines
melta bombs, flamer
Veteran Sergeant
melta bombs, bolt pistol
power fist

Thank you for the suggestions. I've applied 'em a bit, and this is what I've come up with. I'll be panting troop choice #1 minus the sniper rifles for regardless, as i have models for it, as with the 10 man tactical squad, assault squad and captain, including the jump pack. But my first few games ill probably play test #2&3 a few times before i go ahead and buy them. Phoenix, I think i vision my army as a a force of Raven Guard, i think im set on that paint style, scheme to practice with. Though I will play at least 5 games with my models painted before i pick which models to get next, any suggestions on what'd fit well for Raven guard when jumping to, oh say, another 500-750 points. Keep in mind id like to use at least 75% if not all of my 500point force. Thanks again everyone.

How about a 6 man unit with a lascannon and a plasmagun? It has the stamp of approval from all shooty marine armies.
